Darlene Murnin Obituary

April 1, 1922 - August 14, 2018
Darlene Clements Murnin, 96, died August 14 at the Village at Incarnate Word.
She was born April 1, 1922 to Floyd and Teresa Owens in Okemah, Oklahoma.
Darlene was a valued civil servant of Kelly A.F.B. for 21 years as a hydraulic mechanic and engineering data specialist. Upon retirement she took on roles as the Lytle ISD tax assessor/collector and the literacy program project director for the Lytle Public Library, teaching the first ESL class in Lytle. Active in politics, Darlene gave much time and support to the Women's Political Caucus, Senior Citizens Council of Bexar County, San Antonio Democratic League, Lytle Women's Club, Grey Panthers, Texas Democratic Women and Common Cause. She was a docent at the Institute of Texan Cultures for over 20 years.
With her late husband, John J. Murnin, Darlene supported the campaigns of numerous Democrats.
Following John's death in 2011 Darlene volunteered at the Village at Incarnate Word's library, keeping it organized. She shared her political viewpoints personally and through letters to the editor of the newspaper; she was a staunch advocate for women and children. Darlene was preceded in death by John, her daughter Robbie Good, step-daughter Wendy Sanders and sister and brother-in-law, June and Kerm Kruse. She is survived by her sister, Rose Matisse, son Jim Clements, daughter Patti Clements, grandsons Robert and Tracy Olson and stepchildren, Patrick Murnin (Irene), Julie Bartlett (Bob), Brendan Murnin (Terri), Chrissie Warner (Danny), Leonard Weege, and numerous nieces and nephews, grand children and great-grand children.
Our family is so grateful for Darlene's community of sisters and staff at The Village at Incarnate Word and all her close friends and caregivers. We extend our sincerest thanks to Dee Sanchez and Lu Ann Hartnett, as well as R & R Home Caregivers and Good Shepherd Hospice for their loving care, thereby enabling Darlene to attain her wish of remaining in her home of the past eight years. Funeral Mass is at 11:30 am, Saturday, September 1, at St. Joseph's Chapel, Village at Incarnate Word, 4707 Broadway, with reception to immediately follow in the assembly room.
Darlene and John will be laid to rest in a private service at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Darlene would firmly request all to get educated about political issues, know your representatives and candidates, and most importantly, vote...Democrat!

On behalf of the residents and staff of The Village at Incarnate Word, I want to express our deep sympathy to Darlene's family. We were truly blessed to have Darlene in our community for the past eight years. In addition to her work in the library, Darlene was also instrumental in starting several political/civic awareness activities and programs for all residents. We miss her and pray that you will each be blessed with peace and strength in the weeks and months ahead. She left you a wonderful legacy of service and faith.

A leader in everything she supported. I first met her in the Women's Political Caucus in the 80s. She and John were great examples of enduring commitment to change for the betterment of all.
