Doris Whorton Obituary

Doris Rae Whorton, age 83, passed away September 25, 2008. She was born in Dallas on June 19, 1925. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thera and Raymond Beard and brother, Donald Beard. She is survived by her son, Craig Whorton; brother, Bob J. Beard; sisters-in-law, Emmajean Beard and Donna Beard, as well as by numerous nephews and a niece. Doris spent her childhood in southeast San Antonio, graduating from Brackenridge High School where she excelled in academics and playing the saxophone in the school band. Later, while working at the Railway Express Agency, she met her future husband, Louie S. Whorton. Louie served in the 94th Army Infantry during World War II, where he earned the Silver Star Medal for gallantry. He and his fellow soldiers had been surrounded for a week by the enemy during the Battle of the Bulge. While living on the Southside during their early years of marriage, Doris, Louie and Craig spent most weekends on a ranch in Spring Branch owned by Harry and Virginia Knibbe. This on the Guadalupe River was and still is a very special place. Before moving to the Hollywood Park subdivision, Doris began work at Kelly Field, which lasted 30 years. She became Purchasing Manager and Contract Negotiator GP12. Doris belonged to many outside organizations such as the Toast Mistress Club, various Garden Clubs and the Texas Federation of Republican Women. Doris proved to be a strong willed, conservative, independent individual who excelled as a businesswoman. She loved dogs, and took in numerous strays rescued from the streets. And as is common to most native Texans, Doris saw merit in the possession of firearms, which led to her membership in the National Rifle Association as well as ownership of a concealed carry license. Doris had many friends and was a very generous person, especially to her son. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society or the National Rifle Association. SERVICE A Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 3, 2008 at the Mausoleum No. 1 Chapel in Mission Burial Park North, 20900 IH 10 West, 78257. Mission Park Funeral Chapel North.
