Etta Ward Obituary

Etta Bain Ward, 97, passed away March 22, 2001. She was born in Austin, TX, July 15, 1903. After graduating from Austin High School she received her degree from The University of Texas where she met her future husband, Joe H. Ward, an outstanding University athlete. They came to San Antonio in 1931 when Joe became a teacher/coach at Edison High School and Etta helped write the Edison school songs and made uniforms for the Pep Squad. During World War II she was Principal of Woodlawn Hills Elementary School. She also assumed the role of school bus driver and became the famous coach of the eighth grade boys' football, basketball and track teams. In 1948 she became the Executive Director of the San Antonio and Bexar County Council of Girl Scouts, a position she loved because of the wonderful Girl Scout volunteers and staff who shared her desire to help girls reach their full potential. She was known for her infectious humor and her ability as a team builder. Etta was a member of the Laurel Heights United Methodist Church, the Woodlawn Opti-Mrs. Club, and the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae. She was 1965 Career Woman of the Year, recipient of the 1981 San Antonio YMCA Outstanding Lay Leadership Award, 1969 Matrix Headliner, life member of the PTA and life member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe H. Ward. She is survived by her son, Joe Ward, Jr. and wife Bettie, grandson Bradley Ward and wife Miriam of San Antonio, grandson Kent Ward and wife Marsha of Edmond Oklahoma and great grandchildren Molly Ward and Kevin Ward of Edmond and Miranda Ward of San Antonio. The family would like to acknowledge their deep gratitude to the staff of Morningside Manor for all their loving care. MEMORIAL SERVICE WEDNESDAY MARCH 28th 11:30 A.M.
