Roberto Martinez Obituary

AUGUST 28, 1927 - FEBRUARY 21, 2017
Roberto T. Martinez (Bobby) age 89 of San Antonio is now resting in peace on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother, Manuela Cantu, his father, José Maria Martinez and his sister, Guadalupe Hernandez. Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia G. Martinez; his son, Joe Bob Martinez and his wife, Gail Ann; and his daughter, Bobbie Jean (Mona) Davila; he was affectionately regarded by his grandchildren as (Popo) they are, Robert and his wife, Natalie, Amber, John Paul, Armand and Lucas; sister, Gloria Torres; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Martinez began working at 5 years of age as a shoeshine boy downtown. He was a Veteran of WWII having been in the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant and piloted over Eastern Europe and Berlin. His decorations include the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. After discharge from the U.S. Air Force he was employed with the Civil Service at Kelly AFB for 36 years as a Safety Engineer. He also established a family owned Tax Service Bookkeeping business for 59 years. Being a public accountant he maintained businesses both in San Antonio and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. While in San Miguel de Allende, he recognized the need for emergency transportation for those needing medical attention. He sought a friend who found a way to help and was documented in the San Antonio Express with the ambulance that he personally drove and presented to the Mayor of San Miguel de Allende. He was regarded as a mentor to many for his advice and service to people on immigration matters, financial advice and assistance. He also maintained a network of business associates and was able to be a referral source to members of the communities. Roberto and his family were among 7 families that were awarded the Hispanic Family of the Year for their contributions to the community at large. Both he and his wife traveled the world, living in Europe and San Miguel de Allende before returning to San Antonio for retirement. Roberto was a devoted parishioner of St. Pauls' Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a devoted member of the Lion's Club. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and shared the outdoors with his son and grandson. Bobby was the "chef" in the family and everyone remembers his homemade delicious menudo, chorizo, tamales and Thanksgiving dinners.
