Gordon Browning Obituary

Browning, Gordon 11/21/1919 ~ 07/08/2014 CHULA VISTA -- Dr. G. Gordon Browning passed away on July 8, 2014 at the age of 94. He lived a full and eventful life. The son of a Kentucky farming family, Gordon worked his way into and through college at Eastern Kentucky University and to dental school at the University of Louisville before joining the U.S. Navy. Upon leaving the Navy, he opened a private dental practice in Chula Vista. He was a member and President of the Chula Vista Rotary Club and helped lead the drive to establish Southwestern Community College. He served for almost two decades on the college's Board of Trustees. Dr. Browning was also active in Democratic Party politics. He chaired the successful campaigns of Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin and State Senators Wadie Deddeh and Steve Peace. It was Wadie who introduced Gordon to Patricia, a fellow teacher at Sweetwater High School. Gordon and Patricia married in 1967 and lived in Bonita. Their son, Patrick, was born in 1969 joining the family that already included Patricia's 16-year-old son, Steve Peace. Gordon is survived by Patricia, Patrick and Steve, his five grandchildren Kaitlyn and Aidan Browning and Clint, Bret and Chad Peace, and four great-grandchildren Carter, Collin, Elena, and August Peace. Friends and family will gather to celebrate his life at the home of Steve and Cheryl Peace (3499 Heatherwood Drive, El Cajon, CA) on Friday, August 1st, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dress is casual as guests will gather around the pool for food and fellowship. Friends are welcome and asked to bring nothing but their good cheer and great memories of the gentleman from the foothills of Kentucky whose life story took him from the struggles of Depression era farming, to the U.S. Navy, to a rewarding dental career and a respected role as a community leader, a fierce advocate for Democrats in California politics, and a mentor and trusted counselor to friends and family alike.

My sympathy to you and your family, Patricia. A close friend in Rotary, Gordon always brightened my day at our Friday meetings with his quick wit and political insights. I will miss him dearly, as will all his friends in the Chula Vista Rotary Club.

Gordon was one of the wisest men I ever had the privilege of knowing. His friendship and mentoring in my young life was a blessing. Even when we disagreed on politics, his Kentucky charm would always bring me back to reality. More than anything, I am thankful for his belief in me in my younger years when I really needed a sounding board who knew how to keep the important things of life in perspective. Rest in peace Gordon.... you truly made a difference in my life. Take care, Jim

After my junior year at Miami University, Uncle Gordon contacted me and offered me a gift of a lifetime. He offered me plane tickets (my first flight) and a chance to live with his family in exchange for helping in his dental practice and occasional baby sitting. The time with him opened my eyes to a world this small town girl had never experienced before. I'll be forever grateful. With great fondness, Anita Browning Mokas
