William Bock Obituary

Bock, William Ward SAN DIEGO -- William Ward Bock MD passed away on December 8, 2013. He was a remarkable man and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, older brother Frederick; sons William Ward Bock Jr. and Bruce D. Bock MD; step- children Donna Christenson Jander and Thomas Christenson and a total of eight grandchildren. "Ward" as he was usually referred to, was born July 5, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Marion (Garland) and Frederick Bock and grew up during The Depression. He was an accomplished all state football player in his high school years and entered the University of Minnesota in 1941 as a pre-med student. On an accelerated schedule he graduated medical school, also at University of Minnesota in 1947 at which time he married Judith Duerr, mother to his two sons. He completed his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon and began a general practice in Everett, Washington until 1952 at which time he entered the Air Force as Captain, serving until 1954 at Ladd Air Force base near Fairbanks, Alaska. Upon discharge he took up an Orthopedic residency at the University of Utah which he completed in 1957. The call "Go West Young Man" lured Dr. Bock and his family to San Diego in 1958. Ward built a highly successful practice in the Clairemont/Mission Bay area, retiring in 1985. Dr. Bock served thousands of patients during his career and was viewed as a kind, compassionate and skilled surgeon. It was not uncommon to encounter strangers he worked on around town, all with stories to tell about how Ward had fixed that arm, shoulder or leg. He was recognized for excellence by his peers, serving as Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery and Chief of Orthopedics at both Clairemont General Hospital and later Mission Bay Memorial Hospital multiple times during his career. During this period he was divorced and in 1974 married Marjorie Christenson with whom he stayed until his passing. Ward was passionate about sports, the out of doors and family. He was an avid softball player, ping pong player, camper, skier, hiker and Chargers fan, holding tickets since 1961. He enjoyed sports heartily until he could no longer, then contented himself with painting and being close to loved ones. Along the way he managed to instill in his extended family a respect for nature, especially the mountains. He loved Mammoth Lakes and Colorado, hosting each wave of grandchildren to the thrill of annual trips to dude ranches, skiing and fishing trips. He so touched the heart of the Colorado ranch operators that they dedicated a riding-hiking trail in his honor, upon which his ashes will be scattered so he may lie under the trees, stars and towering peaks for eternity. Ward was serious about family ties. He and Marjorie constantly hosted events to bring the family together on a regular basis. Often times, Ward would do something zany, like dressing up, telling corny jokes or reciting poetry. It wasn't always funny though. Ward had a deeply emotional side to him that came shining through and he leaves pieces of his wisdom, warmth and sincerity with all that knew him, not just family. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Ward. Contributions in Ward's name may be made to Sharp HospiceCare Fund of the Grossmont Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Bock was my mom and dad's 9th doctor they took me too as I was born without hip sockets. Dr. Bock told my parents well "we are experimenting with this new thing bone graphing" My parents said rather try something then nothing at all. Those hips he built for me lasted 50+ years! He allowed me not only walk, but to run, water ski, snow ski, and play soccer! I was even a member of my High School Swim team. None of it would have been possible without him. I may have been very young, but I have very vivid memories of him. I have several pictures of me and him when I was young, as it did take a few surgeries and tractions, body casts, etc. When I walked for the first time it was to him. I have such great love and fondness to this great man. I would not be where I am today without him. I hope his family knows. I was just talking about him today and decided to google him. LoveHim! -

Dr. Bock as I knew him was truly a kind and caring man. He always was so attentive and concerned when I came to see him for medical reasons. Once I ran into him in a social setting and he greeted me warmly like I was a long lost friend. I´m so fortunate to have known him.

Dr. Bock, I was told today about your passing. Tonight, I sat my family down and talked about the man that saved my life when I was a baby. You saved me again 42 years later. We sat an extra plate at our table tonight for our Christmas Eve dinner. It was your seat. I will always honor what you did for me. There are moments in life when you realize greatest has graced your world, and you are this to me. Thank you Dr. Bock for saving my life. You are my hero.

To Marjorie and Bruce,
My deepest condolences! We have lost a wonderful human being; full of life, energy, enthusiasm, and adventure. Ward was very kind, helpful and supportive to me during our struggles with the administrator of a partnership investment we were in together. Ward was smart, well-informed, courteous and a rock solid friend and co-investor who salvaged the interests of our partners. He was a fine doctor and a gentleman. I feel privileged to have known him!

I was one of Dr. Bock's patients in the 70's. I used to jump out of planes for sport from 1969-76, and on one of my jumps I broke my pelvis in 2 places upon landing. I ended up at Clairemont Community Hospital, which was just up the hill from where I lived. I found Dr. Bock to be a wonderful doctor because he never discouraged me from getting back into the sport after I healed up, which took about 3 months. I remember asking him when I could get back to jumping and he said anytime you want to, so I was back in the sport the following weekend after being discharged. I am deeply sorry for the family(s)loss. The only other thing I want to say is this: Remember the funny things he did and that will certainly put a smile on your faces. GOD Bless you all.

I have many fond memories of my life with Ward, Bill and Bruce. Although his marriage to my mom, Sally, ended unhappily, I am so grateful that he found Margie. I wish peace for all of Ward's survivors, especially Bill and Bruce.
