I just saw a clip of Hilda reporting for KIRO TV on Billy Milligan on the Netflix series 'Monsters Inside.' It's the first time I've seen her in more than 50 years.
She was my 6th grade Sunday School teacher at Seattle's First Free Methodist church, in about 1959. She was a wonderful and kind teacher.
I have a clear memory of her arranging a debate in our class, re: evolution. I took, or was assigned, the side of evolution. :)
I also knew her as a family (Jack and Solveig Arnold) friend and played chess with her husband Bob Bryant. She is one of the finest persons I have ever known.

Thoughts of Hilda had me looking her up this morning, only to find she had passed away nearly nine years ago.
Hilda was good to me. I wish I had better communicated that appreciation to her back in my Seattle University days.

Hilda was an inspiration in my classes. So smart and so kind.
Older than us and a great deal wiser. Thought about her after so many years apart.

I know that I am several years late to this, but I can't help but believe she is still with us all, and seeing my message.
Hilda, thank you for your guidance and friendship. You were my mentor, and I admired you in every way.
Love always,

The National Federation of Press Women express their condolences to Hilda's family. Hilda was a long-time member of NFPW. She was honored as our "Woman of Achievement" in 1969. We saluted her in 1969 and we fondly remember her from our archives today.

To my loving family Uncle Bob, Vickie and family. I will always remember the last 2 times you came to Michigan. At the Spring Arbor university honoring Aunt Hilda and a short surprise visit with his sister's, what a blessing it was to see them together for the last time. Truly a God send. On behalf of the Bryant family we send you our love, prayers and thoughts. Can you please contact me @ [email protected]

I was in journalism school with Hilda and we graduated in 1965. We met for coffee about 10 years later, but I have never met a nicer woman who was ethical and very smart.
I wish I had stayed in touch with her. She was a very classy woman.

Hilda and her husband, Bob, were youth leaders in our church when I was a student at Ballard High School in the 50's. I remember sewing a skirt for her as part of a fund raising effort. I wonder now if she really needed the skirt, or if she was just encouraging a teenager who needed to learn the joy of giving. When they left Seattle for a time, Hilda was editor of a church magazine, "Youth in Action", headquartered in Indiana. When our Bible quiz team traveled there for competition, Bob and Hilda entertained us at a restaurant and made us feel special. What a wonderful contribution to the lives of growing teens Hilda and Bob made. I am blessed to have known them. Ruth Warner Stamper, Cosmopolis, WA

When Hilda and I arrived in Bangladesh to begin shooting a documentary, we were exhausted from flights which took us from Seattle to New York to London to Dubai to Dhaka. We taxied to the hotel at about 10pm, stowed our luggage and equipment and just when I thought we'd settle in for a much-needed rest, Hilda flagged down a three-wheeled, motorized rickshaw. She coaxed me in to the seat next to her and said to the driver, "Take us to the bazaar." Yeah, right, I laughed to myself. But within ten minutes we were striding through an electrifying market full of the smells and sounds of a city that obviously never slept. It was my introduction to the Third World, to the endless delights of travel and to working with Hilda. It is one of my most unforgettable memories.

Hilda was just the kind of role model a 1980s TV newsroom full of 20-somethings needed. She was fearless, principled, ridiculously energetic--and she was, gasp, older than many of our parents. When I went back to school for an MFA in my '50s, I realized I would be the "Hilda" in my group of much younger classmates. I loved that thought. Thank you, Hilda, for showing me the way. For showing us all the way.

I am blessed to have known and worked with Hilda in television news in the 1980's. She was fearless and positive and had superb instincts for important news stories. We went into Afghanistan and the NW Frontier in 1984 - at a time when any coverage from that region was difficult. Sharp and quick and independent thinking - yet adhering to the strictest journalistic principles.
The world is better place because of you, Hilda. I am better because I knew you. Thank you.

I worked with Hilda at KIRO in the 80's. When she interviewed someone for one of her investigative stories, they would tell her ANYTHING! She just had this way with her, they WANTED to talk to her. After moving from Seattle,I kept up with her and her husband's adventures through Christmas letters. I'm so fortunate to have known and worked with this wonderful woman.

My memories of Hilda and her husband, Bob, go back to the '50's when they served as youth leaders in our Church -- we called our group Hi-C-Y. Week after week they hosted 30-35 teenagers in their home for Bible study and prayer. I can still see Hilda stirring a large kettle of hot chocolate in her kitchen! They were faithful to our group and faithful to the Lord. I send appreciation, love, and prayers to the family.

I have fond memories of Hilda from her University of Washington Daily days. She was older than we were and her drive and ability to balance school, The Daily and a young family were something to behold. A good life comes to an end.

Hilda was one of my instructors at Seattle U. in the early '90s and inspired many of us to go forward into the field of journalism / communication.
She had a way of making everyone feel as if they could do it!
She was an outstanding communicator and even better person.

Hilda was an inspiration to every newswoman - and many lucky newsmen - who had the enviable chance to work with her or around her. She never lost her glee at having a front row seat at Seattle's most interesting events or her love for helping residents understand the new and difficult issues that confronted them as Seattle grew and changed.
When my husband Mark Wrolstad and I worked with Hilda at KIRO, we struggled to keep up with her and constantly marveled at her energy, insight and gusto for the chase.
She had a long and fascinating life, a husband who loved her madly, two children she adored and newsrooms and classrooms full of fans. Wherever she is, she is asking snoopy questions, refusing to accept simplistic answers and demanding as much of her leaders as she always did of herself.
Hilda has always been my hero and she always will be.

She was a generous friend, confidant, conspirator and mentor to a lot of us who were privileged to know and work with Hilda.
Her resolute integrity, her dedication to truth and her pursuit of justice were inspirations to women in print and broadcast journalism, as well as men. Hilda and Bob were curious, skeptical and funny. An unforgettable pair, ahead of their time.

Hilda was one of my primary Journalism professors at Seattle U during the late '80s/early '90s. She left a tremendous impact on her students. To this day, I can hear her voice emphasizing writing in an active voice or explaining why you use the term "more than" instead of "over."
Her stories about her years at the P-I and KIRO were fascinating and inspiring. I feel very fortunate to have known her and for learning so much from her. May she rest in peace.
