MICHAEL ASSALONE Obituary

ASSALONE, MICHAEL, Retired businessman and Diocese of Miami honoree Michael Eugene Assalone passed away Wednesday, January 15. Born in 1913, the Pennsylvania native graduated from Ridgway High School and attended a Pittsburgh business college on scholarship. He later moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he worked in the insurance industry before joining Tennessee Electric Motor Co. He married Ina Kathleen McClanahan in 1938 and with their five children relocated to Miami's Allapattah neighborhood in 1949. For the next 40 years, Michael worked tirelessly to establish Florida Electric Motor Co. A devout Roman Catholic, he became a member of Corpus Christi Parish, serving as an usher, Mass lector and fundraiser for years of annual Fish Fry Fridays, Casino Nights and Fall Festivals. He was a member of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, the Serra Club and honored in 1965 by then Bishop (and later Archbishop) of Miami, His Excellency, Coleman F. Carroll with the Diocese of Miami Medal for Meritorious Service. Michael was one of 21 pillars of the community recognized for his "constant zeal" among the ranks of Monsignor Bryan Walsh, Mary Louise Maytag McCahill and Athalie Range who aided the church and the city in facing the era's critical challenges including supporting the struggle for civil rights and aiding Cuban refugees. He also served as a member and chapter officer in the Electrical Apparatus Service Association (EASA) and shared his business acumen at national conferences and in visits to area classrooms. His love of music, reading, traveling and his faith never left him. He enjoyed singing in his rich baritone voice, playing harmonica and mandolin, and travel to distant countries and long road trips well into his 90s. Even as his hearing and eyesight diminished, he continued to enjoy visits and calls from friends, children, grandchildren and his St. Brendan family. His long struggle with macular degeneration resulted in regular visits to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute until 2013, generating a rich case history capturing a 60-year span. Michael is preceded in death by his wife Ina Kathleen and daughters Dianne Marie and Angela Christi as well as brothers John and Patrick and sister Lena Russell. Survivors include daughters Ina (Joe) Humkey, Mary (Frank) Norris, Fran (Dary) Matera; son James (Barbara) Assalone; grandsons Christopher (Lee) DiMella, Timothy (Kathy) DiMella, Terence Pastirchak, Justin (Natalie) Gilmore, Ryan (Cynthia) Norris, Cody Matera; granddaughter Kate Norris; three great-grandsons Nicholas DiMella, twins Michael and Mason Gilmore as well as sister Jenny (Bob) Gardner. Visitation 7 - 9pm and rosary 8 pm Sunday Jan. 19th at VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES CHAPEL, 4600 SW 8th St. Funeral Mass 10 am Mon. Jan. 20th at St. Brendan Catholic Church, 8725 SW 32ND St., Miami. Ten years now, Dad, since you´ve passed on to that "better place." More years than ten since Mom, Dianne, and Angela left this earth. We´ll mark one year for our dearest Terry this May 17th. I miss all of you more than I can say and think of you so often. I feel fortunate to have many, many good memories of our time together. You are always in my thoughts, always in my prayers. Love, Mary

1/13/2024. I don't, as a rule, drive through Westchester, but tonight as I drove south on 84th Avenue from Coral Way, Mike and Angela came to mind. I miss them so much, even after all these years. May they live in peace and joy in the company of the Blessed Trinity, Mary and St. Joseph m. Karen

I will always remember Mike and Angela with great fondness. I know they are enjoying the company of the Blessed Trinity, Our Lady, St. Joseph and all the saints. I still have their phone number in my contacts and I will never delete it. I still miss them. With much love.

I have the happiest memories of growing up in our family. You and Mom made that possible. Thank you. We are told that we move on to a better place once we leave this earth. I don't know if that's true; I hope it is. I do know that I cherish and miss you Mom, Angela, and Dianne every single day. Peace be with you. God bless us all.

From Your Family

October 6, 2014

Mike, watch over us all from Heaven. I know you are there. Lots of love, Karen.
P.S. I didn't know you had left us. I tried calling your house today and Angela's cell only to find them disconnected. I love you both.

Your children, grandchildren, and, greatgrandchildren

It is your spirit that lives on in all of us and will always be part of who we are. You will always be remembered as a man of strength and character, a defender of the faith, a fair and just employer, a devoted husband, proud of his family. Your legacy will endure through the stories and memories we share through the ages.
We light this candle in tribute to you.

May the family find peace in this very difficult time. The bible offers great hope for the near future "Death will be no more."

Dear Ina and Family, Sorry I did not make the mass or interment. Your father was so amazingly endearing the two times I met him. I am sorry for your loss. Reading the obituary, I see what a wonderful human being he was. He will always be a good part of you. My sincerest sympathies. I'd like to think he is in heaven with his loved ones who predeceased him.
