Philip Arnot Obituary

Philip Howard Arnot, Jr.
July 15, 1924 - April 6, 2021
Phil Arnot, teacher, political activist, mountaineer, adventurer, wilderness guide, photographer, author, decorated WWII veteran, athlete, and storyteller died on April 6 at the age of 96. Born in San Francisco, California to Philip Howard Arnot, Sr. and Ruth Sheldon Arnot, he was a fourth-generation Californian. Raised in San Francisco with his late siblings, Nancy Arnot Harjan and David Sheldon Arnot, he spent his youth playing street football, attending Cal football games, getting into mischief, and summering at his grandmother's cabin in Lagunitas, California. While a student at Lowell High School, Phil discovered track, which inspired him to study hard for the purpose of having the opportunity to run track for Cal. As a high school senior he won the half-mile in the All-City meet and was named "the greatest track runner of the year," by the San Francisco Examiner. He realized his dream to run for Cal where he excelled at the 880-yard run. At the age of 56 he won the 1980 Pan American Masters meet in the 800-meter run for his age group.

In 1944 he interrupted his studies to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. He piloted a B-17 in 21 offensive missions over Germany for which he was awarded several service medals. In 2011 he was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in recognition of France's gratitude for his service. Following the war, Phil returned to Cal, and graduated as a third-generation University of California, Berkeley graduate.

Having been introduced as a young boy to walks in the woods near Lagunitas by his grandmother, Phil's love of the wilderness grew and established deep roots. He explored the Sierra Nevada, documenting its beauty in photography. Soon he was introducing teenagers and adults to the wilderness as a personal guide and author of numerous trail guides. To this day, hundreds of people credit him with instilling within them a deep appreciation and love of the wilderness. His experience as a guide led him to believe that human beings have an innate affinity, and even a need, to be with wilderness. Phil's adventurous spirit took him to faraway places including Alaska, South America and New Zealand.

A man of strong convictions, he participated in peace marches and tirelessly wrote letters to politicians, community leaders and others in the hopes of creating a better and safer world.

He and his first wife, Mary Jeanne Eckerman, had 3 children whom they raised in Redwood City and Menlo Park. He taught world history and coached track at Carlmont High School in Belmont for many years and later at Ravenswood High School in East Palo Alto where he introduced a mountaineering and rock-climbing program. Phil spent the last 40 decades living in the rustic cabin in Lagunitas that his grandmother built in 1920.

A tireless storyteller, Phil loved to make up ghost stories to share around a campfire. He had a remarkable ability to recall even the smallest details that enlivened his tales of a mischievous boyhood, highly competitive track races, mountaineering adventures and his WWII service. He put most of his life experiences in writing and documented his many adventures in breathtaking photographs.

Phil is survived by his three children, Bruce Arnot, Cynthia 'Cindy' Barber (Brad) and Susan Arnot; granddaughters Katharine "Kate" Davis (Peter), and Anne Marie Barber (Eric Rubenacker); companion of 25 years, Sondra Claire; sister-in-law Ann Arnot; nephews Tom Arnot (Rae Pederson), Todd Arnot and Jim Arnot ; niece Tanya Harjan and many loyal friends. The family gives special thanks to David Lunn, Jiori Orfanos and Joyce Mustin for their love, care and generosity in his final weeks.

Phil was one of a kind and will be missed by many.

Dear Phil, it has been many years since I have hiked with you and your wonderful hiking friends. THANK YOU! Wish I had done more hikes with you but I did enough to appreciate how much you loved the wilderness. From the High Sierra to our local hikes throughout Marin ( special outings for those of us who were solo) with a nice dinner afterward, I have so many tales to tell and lessons learned. I will never forget the afternoon you handed me your tape recorder. " Go up and sit up on the big rock and Listen." I did to the sounds of "Amazing Grace." Dominic and I had coffee this AM, and we reminisced about that rainy day in the Sierra. Posted in the " Marin Discoveries" magazine, The picture of Dom and I using an Umbrella to stay dry. So Much fun. So many memories. And more than that, My mother had the good fortune to have your physician doctor Dad deliver me at St. Mary's hospital 81 years ago. Rest In Peace dear friend

My dad was one of Phil's best friends. I guess I wasn't aware Phil passed on 4/3 - my dad's birthday. My dad passed in 2019 - Phil always said he'd live longer ;-) I hope they are hiking the Brooks Range together. Phil was and still is a legend. Rest well, you faithful warrior for the environment. You taught many to love and appreciate the great outdoors. Love, Denise

Mr. Arnot took my Carlmont group up Mt. Shasta in 1980. I felt safe with him as guide. I have thought a lot about Mr. Arnot since his passing and I'm missing a fine human being. He is always in my thoughts.

Phil's love of the outdoors was great inspiration for me to further explore and enjoy the wilderness.

I am very fortunate to have met him through a connection he had to my father Don -- starting in elementary school and lasting through college and afterwards.

I still think about you Phil and so happy to have spent time with you late in your life.

Phil was my coach for running, and for life. I may not run anymore, but I still appreciate all that he taught me about persisting and doing one's best. He was the best.

Just learned of Phil's passing from an old climbing/hiking buddy of mine. Phil was my dad's best friend for many years. My dad was also a WWII decorated veteran who passed in 2019 at 93. These guys knew how to live life and shared many hikes together through the Sierra Nevada and Alaska. Rest in Peace, Phil....you brought the love of the wilderness to so many. Hope you and Dad are in Alaska right now.

Phil was one of my late father's best friends growing up in San Francisco. Our families spent a lot of time together growing up. I saw him for lunch a few months ago and was grateful to hear some of his stories about his teaching at Carlmont High School, his time in the military, and his work as a wilderness guide. I have always been a big admirer of Phil and will remember him fondly.

Mr. Arnot, as I will always think of him, was my World Backgrounds teacher in my sophomore year at Carlmont and my International Relations teacher in my senior year. Carlmont had many excellent teachers in my time there, and he stood out as exceptional in an exceptional cadre. His classes were interesting and challenging, everything education should be.

I remember Mr. Arnot running laps around the school track every morning, long before running was the thing to do. He had amazing energy and commitment both there and in the classroom.

Some years later, I encountered him again as a wilderness guide and went on a couple of hiking and camping trips with him. He was just as energetic and impressive as I remembered him from school.

It has been 56 years since I graduated from Carlmont, and I still think of and talk about Mr. Arnot. That, I believe, is the true definition of immortality.

Phil was my track coach at Carlmont HS (1953-1955). He was one of three teachers there who made a significant difference in my later life. His world history class ignited a real appreciation for history in me and made my later trips abroad much more interesting. As my track coach he taught me the value of continued practice which has made my journey in life much more interesting than the rewards. I feel truly fortunate to consider him a mentor.

I remember many Carlmont YMCA Alpine Club hikes led by Phil. Mr. Arnot, to me, was a special person, leading many of us to a lifelong love of the outdoors.
I remember David Lunn too.

Phil Arnot. What a Mentor, Teacher,"Prince". I remember getting ready for HS. I wanted to Run. A distance runner. Not a baseball player like most teens. First day of Cross Country season 1955 there he was, Coach Arnot. Thats when my Dream began.Guess Phil saw something in me & others. Thats when a life long work ethic was born. The team worked long & hard. I say WE because Phil would work out with us. In 1957 & 1958 I had the the great experience of. back packing with Phil & group into Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park for 2 week trips with everything on our backs. That was another character building lesson. What a teacher of the outdoors & life.

This has to be ironic. On April 6, or 7, Judy & I took down off the wall to paint, my two old pair of Adidas track shoes, and the Bugs inside. Phil saw to it that we had these state of the art shoes. Now 60 some yrs. old. Still in good shape!!

Thank You Mr. Arnot for all you did for The World. Judy (Graetz) Reams and I are still loving the outdoor dream living in Fall River Mills, CA.

RIP My Mentor.

My Condolences to Mr. Arnot's family and all who had the opportunity to know him.
Mr. Arnot and I met at The Good Earth about three or four years ago. We sat at the "big table," where he engaged me in conversation, sharing wonderful stories about his life. Mr. Arnot was friendly, outgoing, inquisitive, and possessed charisma. He was easy to be with, a laid-back fellow. He had me leaning forward on the edge of my seat, many times, waiting to hear of one of his many adventures and life experiences. He was a wise and knowledgeable man. His sweet smile and easy-going personality will be remembered. Warmly, Jennifer Joe

Mr. Arnot was my World History teacher at Carlmont. He was the only history teacher throughout high school and college who made the subject come alive for me. He had the gift of sharing his love of history and making his students feel like it was real people he was talking about , and not just dates and names. He was definitely a gifted teacher. I am grateful to have been one of his students.

Phil was a free spirit who believed in social justice. In the 80's he went to Nicaragua and photographed the death and destruction the Reagan Administration was inflicting on the Sandinista government. He put together a slide show that we used as a fundraiser for a health project that we were doing in the war zone It was a real success! He will be greatly missed and I hope he is soaring above the mountains he so dearly loved.

My deepest condolences to all of Phil's family. He (Mr. Arnot, to me) was my track coach in 1954-1958 at Carlmont High, and he taught me a great deal about competition (and life), which, in a few words, was "if you do your best but don't win, you have nothing to be sorry for, but if you don't do you best, even winning doesn't make up for it."

I have encountered phil over the years and in various places through my aunt who was a close friend of his for many years including his last. Every encounter i remember vividly; he was something else. I am sorry he is no longer with us but happy he has been released from his body which could no longer keep up with him. That body went through alot in 97 years. It deserves a rest!!

My husband and i were in the first graduating class at carlmont 1956 and had Mr. Arnot for world history and also “senior problems. “ Rather than learn how to establish a budget for life beyond highschool, his focus on senior problems dealt with learning how to recognize when we were being manipulated via the media. A very useful learning experience indeed— something we remember to this day! We had many teachers in highschool and Mr. Arnot was one of the very best!
Years later we took a course on the flora/ fauna of the Point Reyes Seashore and Phil Arnot was our instructor. We enjoyed seeing the seashore through his eyes and were happy he was able to pursue his lifelong love of the outdoors by sharing his experiences with others. As the obit stated, “Phil was one of a kind and will be missed by many.”

I taught U.S. History for 33 years...after having been inspired to go into teaching because I was a student in his World Studies class at Carlmont and hoped I could duplicate his insights, wisdom, joie de vivre for others. My wife and I have planned and escorted over 100 tours to all corners of the globe and Phil always joked that we had "learned our lessons well. "
A few year ago we arranged a flight for Phil on the B-17 Memphis Belle, similar to his plane he few in combat over Germany in World War Two as a 19year old!! and we laughed a he went through all the preflight chatter and routine procedures as we flew over the Bay Area. Of course this time he sat BEHIND the pilot. His can do spirit will live in all of those who were lucky to cross his path. Au revoir Rod and Pat
