John Donald Cook



Shreveport, LA- Funeral services celebrating the life of John Donald Cook, 86, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013 in the chapel of Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Officiating will be Bro. John Harp of Brookwood Baptist Church and Brian Huber. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Don was born on November 22, 1926 in Ruston, LA and passed away on January 29, 2013 in Shreveport, LA. Mr. Cook was a 1944 graduate of Ruston High School and a 1948 graduate of Louisiana Tech University. Don was the drum major for both the Ruston High Bearcats and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. While attending Louisiana Tech he was a member of the Lambda Chi Fraternity. Don married Betty Baker in 1949. Mr. Cook spent his entire career working for Bird & Son Building Materials as a District Manager until his retirement. He was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and an usher. At church he lovingly passed out candy to the children. Don's hobbies were golf, reading and storytelling. He adored the love of his granddaughters and they were the love of his life.

Left to cherish beautiful memories of Don is his wife of 63 years, Betty Cook; one daughter, Donette Smith and husband Greg; grandchildren, Rebekah Myers and husband Chad, Betsy Schmidt and husband Robby, Mollie Catherine Blunt and husband Patrick; great grandchildren, Charlie and Abby Ryan Myers and Andrew Schmidt; sister, Anne Tabarlet; nephews, Joey and John Tabarlet; niece, Susan Emerson and husband Don, as well as their children, Justin Emerson and wife Brittany and Julie Emerson.

Honoring Mr. Cook as pallbearers will be: Don Emerson, Chad Myers, Robby Schmidt, Patrick Blunt, Jack Rose and James Mohr.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Cook's doctors, Craig Miller, Eric Smith, Paul Schuler and Joyce Feagin. The family would also like to thank the entire 4th floor Nursing Staff at Willis Knighton Pierremont for their unending love and compassion for their husband, father and grandfather in his final days.
