Centenarian, 'a renaissance woman' who inspired her family
Virginia Lippa, 100, passed away peacefully in her Dongan Hills home on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. Born in Manhattan, Mrs. Lippa moved with her family when she was 2 years old to Arrochar and settled in Dongan Hills in 1962.
After graduating from Curtis High School, she worked for the U.S. Air Force as a civilian secretary and even performed on Broadway with her coworkers performing Holiday shows. Mrs. Lippa was lovingly known as "Babe" to her family and friends, and after raising her 5 children, she returned to the workforce as an administrative assistant working for local doctor's offices. She performed medical billing and clerical work for Dr. Horn, Dr. Soren and Dr. Parikh. She was praised by Dr. Parikh in an Advance article, where he said Mrs. Lippa was "efficient, accurate, attentive to detail and had fortitude with a true understanding of the law." Mrs. Lippa also volunteered her time at St. Vincent's Hospital (RUMC) in the medical records department for many years.
At. home, Mrs. Lippa enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting. She proudly created beautiful sweaters, Barbie doll clothing and blankets for everyone's new born babies. "Babe" was an accomplished pianist also. She even performed in concert at Carnegie Hall when she was younger. She was a parishioner of St. Ann's Church in Dongan Hills.
"Mom was an independent, strong woman who instilled a strong work ethic and independence in her children," said her daughters. "She was a modern, forward thinking woman who inspired her family greatly. She enjoyed having fun and was known to opt for a day at the beach with her children rather than doing her housework."
Mrs. Lippa was the beloved wife of the late Tolmino "Tony" Lippa, who passed away in 1974. The couple was married 29 years when he passed. She was the loving mother of Virginia (Pasquale) Carbone, Thomas Lippa, Dr. Nancy (Frank) Ziehler, Barbara (John) Duro and Angela (Guy) Bove. She was the cherished grandmother of Michael and Nicholas Lippa and great-grandmother of Penelope. Babe always maintained a very special relationship with her daughter-in-law Nancy Lippa. She was also the dear sister of the late Mary Levinos, Romilda Liberatore and Louis Canale.
A. Azzara Funeral Home, 183 Sand Lane, SI, NY 10305 has been entrusted with Mrs. Lippa's funeral arrangements which include visiting on Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Ann's Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment is in Moravian Cemetery.
