GEORGE NELSON Obituary

George Andrew Nelson passed away May 17, 2015 in Redmond, WA.

Born July 21, 1927, Sedro-Wooley, WA to Gust and Celia Nelson. He was the youngest of 3 children. George excelled at sports including basketball, football, and track and coached all of those sports plus volleyball at Meadowdale High School. George was also an expert bird hunter and trap shooter and never lost his touch with a shotgun.

After high school George enlisted in the navy and served on the destroyer USS Grand Canyon. Following his Navy service George married the love of his life, Nancy Nelson, to whom he was married one month short of 66 years and with whom he had 3 children.

George went to Western Washington College, becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. After gaining his teaching credentials, he taught at Sedro-Woolley high school and then took his family to Germany where he taught on the American base in Wurzburg.

On returning George became a teacher at Meadowdale High School and built an industrial arts shop that was one of the best on the West Coast. Many of his students would return to thank him for his uncompromising guidance during their high school years. After retirement he worked at Boeing as a machine planner before full retirement.

George is survived by his wife Nancy, sisters Elaine and Trudy, sons Craig and Michael, daughter Diane, and 5 grandchildren.

At George's request there will be no funeral or memorial service. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the American Legion.

George was my coach first. I respected him so much I took his metal shop class. He mentored and helped me for two years and then helped me get a job as a machinist apprentice after graduation. I stayed in touch for a few years and then lost touch. He came to my work one day and said he was working for Boeing. I have owned my own shop for the last 18 years and owe very much to "Coach Nelson"

George was my high school metal shop teacher. He mentored me and made working with metal fun. George is the reason I have been a Machinist for the last 33 years. George got me my first job in the Machinist trade, sweeping floors and running errands for Ron and Don Honycutt. He is going to be sorely missed, I've always wished I could have thanked him for his impact on my life, I will never forget him. Rest in peace my old friend!

George was my teacher, coach, mentor but most of all I call him my friend. He was always there for me when I needed him. Offered to do anything to help me when my Dad had a stroke in my senior year. I have had a Machine shop for 35 years and owe a lot to George. I am sorry for not seeing him inthe past years. Di and I kept talking about getting him to my shop. I know he's looking down now and hopefully proud of what he helped turn me into. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
