Franz Stockmann Obituary

Sept. 15, 1916 - Dec. 11, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Franz J. Stockmann, M.D, 94, passed away at 5:53 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th, in Dujarie House at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, Indiana. Franz is survived by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Helga; three children, Franz (Elly) of Elgin, Illinois, Ann Firth (John) of Mishawaka, IN, and Karin (John) Mortensen of Ellicott City, MD; and seven grandchildren, John, Margaret, Catherine, James and Clare Firth, Peter and Thomas Mortensen. Franz was born in Camberg, Germany, on September 15, 1916, the son of Margarete and Hubert Stockmann. Franz married Helga Lyding on April 25, 1953, and together they immigrated to the United States in 1955. Having attended medical school in Germany, Franz completed five years of specialty training in Internal Medicine in Rochester, NY, and Denver, CO. He and Helga settled in Elgin, Illinois, in 1960 where he practiced as an internist until 1987. Franz was a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Internal Medicine. His colleagues respected him for his thoroughness and dedication, and his patients knew and loved him as a caring and compassionate healer. A devoted spouse and father, Franz loved his family above all else. He was a gifted writer and poet, enjoyed classical music and the great outdoors, and was passionate about World Cup soccer. Franz was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his three siblings. The family wishes to thank the staff at Dujarie House for the wonderful care they provided to Franz in the last weeks of his life. A private funeral Mass will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Franz's name to the National Audubon Society at http://www.audubon.org/. or to the Priest of Holy Cross, P.O. Box 765, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7

I remember my parents hauling all five of us kids to Dr. Stockmann's office to get our annual flu shots. As I would "ponder my fate," I would relax by looking at the Vincent van Gogh Sunflowers print on the wall of the waiting room. This childhood memory will forever be more cherished. Thank you Dr. Stockmann.
