Philip Doherty Obituary

Philip J. Doherty, who grew up in St. Peter's Parish in Dorchester and went on to become a popular and highly respected cardiologist at Milton Hospital, died at his Milton home Wednesday June 8, 2011. Dr. Doherty had been suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The eldest of eight children of Boston Police officer John Joseph Doherty and his wife Mary, Doherty was afflicted with rheumatic fever which left him hospitalized for long stretches of his childhood. This seeming misfortune however, planted in him a lifelong love of reading, mathematics, and ultimately, led him into medicine and cardiology. It would also greatly influence the type of doctor he would become, known as one who was appreciative of the nursing staff and personally attentive to his patients. After graduating from Boston Latin School and then Boston College, Doherty attended Georgetown Medical School. He graduated cum laude in 1963, and as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. It was also at Georgetown where he met Patricia Fountain, a nursing student who would become his wife. After completing his medical residency at Georgetown and his cardiology fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, he was invited to join the Medical Center's full-time faculty as an Assistant Professor of Cardiology. In 1971, now with a family of four children, Dr. Doherty returned to Massachusetts to run the training program at Carney Hospital in Dorchester. He began his own highly successful practice at Milton Hospital in 1977. Over the next 33 years, Dr. Doherty would serve as Chief of Cardiology and then Chief of Medicine at Milton Hospital, and on the Board of Directors for the hospital. He was a frequent lecturer on issues related to cardiovascular health and received numerous awards for his distinguished service, including the Lira Family Award for Physician Excellence in 2000 and the M. Vassar Pierce M.D. Award Honoring Physician Excellence in 2003. Throughout his career, Dr. Doherty was known and beloved by his many patients not only for the high quality of care he provided, but for his kindness and accessibility. Dr. Doherty considered his long-time staffers, Virginia Doyle, Donna Ducette, and Natalie Cappelletti, extended family. He was also a favorite of the Milton Hospital nursing staff, with whom he worked very closely. Dr. Doherty greatly valued and respected and the nurses' contributions to patient care. While every patient's problems were treated with the utmost professionalism, it was an open secret that Dr. Doherty showed special concern to any malady that negatively affected a patient's golf game. He was himself an avid golfer and longtime member of the Wollaston Golf Club. Despite his professional accomplishments, Dr. Doherty took the greatest pride in his own family. He adored his wife Pat, and was a devoted father to Maureen E. Towle of Hyde Park, Erin A. Daly of Walpole, John P. of Atlanta, GA and James P. Doherty of Knoxville, TN. He treasured any time spent with his sisters and brothers, Mary Cormier of Sandwich, Ellen Platt of CA, Sheila Scannell of Walpole, Jean Neiswand of NJ, Joseph of Billerica, Daniel of Arlington and Thomas Doherty of Pembroke. Dr. Doherty found absolute joy in each of his eleven grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Saint Elizabeth Church, Milton, on Monday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., Milton, on Sunday, June 12, 3 - 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Dr. Doherty's memory to the Milton Hospital Development Fund, Highland Street, Milton, MA 02186.

Although it has been many years since Bill and I were sitting in Dr. Doherty's office, we think back on the fine care and great conversations we had over the years.........We still miss him to this day and I don't enter that walkway without looking over to the window and saying "good morning Dr. Doherty" we miss you more as days go by.

I was just thinking of Phil the other day, remembering his anniversary.
Phil was a doctor of the soul and heart long before he had an MD after his name.
I have so many happy childhood memories of him as we would play chess (beating him was just about impossible). His kind heart, gentle manner and incredible sport skills at the Mather playground and on Church St. always bring a smile to my face.
Thinking of each of you, dear siblings,as you continue to mourn Phil's loss and celebrate his life. He truly was 'one of a kind'. I still miss him. Marie

It may be almost 8 years since his passing but there isn't a day that I walk into Beth Israel Deaconess that I don't glance over to the right side of the walkway, glance at his old office, and feel sad at the loss of such a wonderful friend and physician.......He was "one of a kind".......we still speak of him with love and affection..............and are grateful for the sixteen years we called him our doctor and friend.

I am finding about Phil's passing seven years after the fact. As an intern at Georgetown University Hospital in 1965-66, Phil was my senior resident part of that time. He was a great leader and a wonderful doctor. I think of him often. I knew much of his medical history including the SBE. I was aware of what an insurance underwriter might calculate in terms of life expectancy, and yet he lived some 74 years, thank G-d.

To the Doherty family, I know this condolence is coming 4 years after Dr. Doherty's passing but I had just found the notice of your families loss and can't express how sorry I am, and what a wonderful Dr. of mine he was. He treated me from 1982 until the 90's and I can not say enough of how he was such a dedicated Dr. and as a lot have said friend to all his patients. I can remember a time on a Saturday morning when Dr.P called me to give my results and could not believe him calling on a weekend and a time when he would have been out golfing. But I was experiencing an episode of what was going on at the time of the call and he stayed right on the phone with my husband and myself to get through my heart issue at time and explained all to us.My heart goes out to his wife, children, grandchildren and family he loved so dearly and pray someday they'll find a cure of what Dr.P endured and suffered with als. My prayers and deep sympathy still go out to all of you. And may God Bless a wonderful Doctor and man.
Sincerely, Margaret Breen

What a wonderful, caring, and dedicated doctor he was. He will be sadly missed by all of this patients. He cannot be replaced in my book. I had the pleasure of having him as my doctor for almost 30 years. He always had a great story about his wife and children to share. What a way he had about him and his golf game was not bad either. To Family of Dr. Doherty: Many years ago
I met your father once for an exam at Milton Hospital. Oddly after the exam, your father noted that he and I were born on the same day October 6th, 1937. He asked where I lived on my birth date and it turned out that we lived next door to eachother on Saxton Street in the Savin Hill Section of Dorchester. In any event,Please accept my condolences.

I am deeply saddened at Phil's passing.I grew up with Phil and his siblings. They lived on Winter St.,I lived on Church St. We spent hours playing together. The Doherty's are a great family! What wonderful childhood memories we all share! As a teenager, Phil was a brilliant chess player and when he was well, he could outrun most of us neighborhood kids. His sterling career in medicine, his deep love for his patients and staff will long be remembered and cherished. My heartfelt sympathy to Pat and her family, and to all the Dohertys as they hand back to God, a true masterpiece of His Love.
Sincerely,

To the Doherty Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Dr. Doherty watched me grow at Milton, from secretary, to nursing assistant to registered nurse. He would always come around the corner with a smile on his face, coffee in hand and say "How you doing?" Dr Doherty was very easy to talk too and always listened to what the nursing staff had to say, he truly apprichiated their judgment. Although you couldn't always find him right away... he would always make his way over to the hospital and track you down! Dr. Doherty was first and foremost a family man. He LOVED talking about his wife, Pat and her wonderful golfing skills, his children and grandchildren. He was truly loved by all and we will miss him very much!
May you find peace in your wonderful and loving memories!
