JAMES CARR Obituary

JAMES OZBORN CARR II

James Ozborn Carr II (Jim), died Thursday, May, 24, 2012, at Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawba Valley. He was born August 22, 1941, in Wilmington, NC, to James Dickson and Rosalie Watters Carr. He was in some kind of uniform for his whole life, starting with Cub Scouts; he became a Life Scout. He graduated in 1959 from New Hanover High School, where he was in the ROTC. He attended Wilmington College (now the University of North Carolina at Wilmington) from 1959 to 1962, when he joined the U.S. Air Force. He spent most of his service at Rhein-Main Air Base, enjoying touring Europe during his leave times. After his discharge in 1966, he returned to Wilmington College in 1967 and graduated in June 1968 with a B.A. in business administration. After a brief stint with North Carolina National Bank in Morganton, NC, he began work Sept. 1, 1969, as news director of WHKY TV & TalkRadio. He learned his way around Hickory and the surrounding area while gathering news, then selling advertising. If you told him what structure was at a certain location, he could tell you the address. At his death he was an Account Executive, Certified Radio Marketing Consultant for 1290 WHKY. Jim became a member of the Civil Air Patrol as a cadet at age 15. In 1956 he became a senior member and worked his way up the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel 1977. During his membership he was NC Chief of Staff, NC Group Commander, NC Director of Communications and the Director of Cadets for NC and the Middle East Region (SC, NC, VA, WV, MD, DE, DC). He completed all training levels for Senior Member. He enjoyed working with cadets, and most of all teaching cadets about flying. He was one of the few certified orientation pilots. One of his big pleasures was teaching teenager Jenna Bordash to fly. Jenna has since graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and is now training to fly helicopters. In 1976 Jim achieved three goals: He got his pilot's license, his HAM operator license and his real-estate license. He was a member of the Lake Hickory Association, starting in 1975 when he was living in Mountain View (Hickory). He started as treasurer, then in about 1980 until May 2012 he was the president of the association. For several years as president, he helped to coordinate the local area N.C. Big Sweep clean-up of Lake Hickory. He was a member of Catawba County Action Professionals. In March of 2012 he received the Ed Kerr Memorial "Professional of the Year" award.

Jim is survived by his wife of 25 years as of May 30, Paula Stockton Carr; his sister, Eugenie Waddell Carr of Winston-Salem, NC; and cousins: Peter Stillman (Adelaide Villmoare) of Poughkeepsie, NY; Anne Nordeman (Jacques) of New York, NY; Fred Stillman (Debra Campbell) of New York, NY; Alfred Stillman of San Francisco, CA; Waddell Stillman (Kristina)--also Jim's godson--of New York, NY; Katherine Daughteridge of Greenville, NC; Ben Graham (Lynn) of Wilmington, NC; Fred Graham (Nell) of Wilmington, NC; Susan Bancks of Jacksonville, FL; Laura Whittall (Don) of Jacksonville, FL; brother-in-law, Stanley Stockton (Susan) of Canon City, CO; and all their families.

Not sure what to say?

I am so sad to hear of Jim's passing. He was an inspiration to people all across North Carolina, especially Big Sweep volunteers. He was a Big Sweep County Coordinator for 16 years, and we all are going to miss him, his stories and experiences. We are all better people for knowing him.

It was my pleasure and honor to have known Jim. One of his many and perhaps lesser known qualities was his passion for the environment. He was a great environmental steward with many efforts on behalf of Lake Hickory in particular. Many of us will continue to enjoy the water quality improvements in our region, in part because of Jim's efforts over several decades, with the Lake Hickory Association, NC Big Sweep, The Catawba River Study Committee, etc..
