Hazel Vallarino Obituary



Hazel Cook Vallarino Hazel Cook Vallarino, resident of Austin, passed away on January 12, 2007. She was born to Henry and Maude Cook on October 8, 1923, in Belton, Texas. She was raised in Belton and Chadron, Nebraska. Hazel was a proud daughter to her mother, a graduate of Yale, being one of the first women to receive a Ph.D., and her father, a Belton store owner. Hazel went on to receive an Undergraduate degree in Zoology and a Master's degree in Microbiology from the University of Texas. She was married to Robert Vallarino, for over 25 years, who preceeds her death. Hazel was employed at Seton Medical Center for over 20 years in the lab department. Hazel later retired from the Texas Air Control Board after ten years of service in 1990. During her retirement, she remained active especially enjoying her time with her grandchildren. She participated in many community activities as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, West Austin Caregivers and Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was a Silver Strings player and a Toastmistress. Hazel is survived by her two daughters, Ramona Jarvis and husband, Tim; Virginia Hill and husband, Brent; five grandchildren: Jill Jarvis, John Jarvis, Ben Jarvis, Mandy Hill, and Patrick Hill; brother, Henry M. Cook II, and wife, Nancy; as well as other special loved ones and friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, January 15, 2007, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at 1:30 p.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Private Interment will follow on Thursday, January 18, 2007, in Belton, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hazel's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, Capitol of Texas Chapter, 3420 Executive Center Drive, Livingston Building, Ste. 301, Austin, TX 78731-1626.
