I went to work at the AFD Admin, on Red River street, in 1994 and met Laverne there. She was many things to many in the AFD but her mark was surely left in the form of her peach cobbler. It was, as they say, to die for and was a highlight of our various holiday celebrations..I've had none finer and I think of it especially during this time of year! But my favorite memory of Laverne was during the UPS strike around, I believe, 1997. Our UPS delivery person, a young African man from Ghana named Manny, was the only one who possessed an uncanny ability to soothe Laverne's spirit if she were having a particularly rough day. He'd waltz into our office on a delivery with a huge grin and exclaim loudly “Ahhhh! Hello Laverne!” She couldn't help but grin, too. Because of the strike we didn't see him for a couple of weeks. Somehow we had taken a picture of Manny which Laverne sought out, acquired, blew up into poster size, and then had posted by our front door with a large caption underneath which read “Have you seen this man?” When the strike ended and Manny walked in the door and saw that poster, his legs melted out from underneath him and he collapsed under his packages and just laughed until we all were laughing with him. Laverne just stood there with a sheepish grin on her face but inside, I knew she was laughing as hard as he was. She will be missed..God's blessing on her family.
