Santos Monreal Obituary

Santos (Sandy) Torres Monreal Nov. 1, 1922 - Jan. 19, 2009 On Monday, January 19, 2009, with His eyes lovingly set upon her and smiling gently, God spoke her name. Santos Torres Monreal, 86, of Austin peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones. She leaves behind a rich legacy of family and friends. Born on All Saints Day, November 1, 1922 in Del Valle, Texas, she was the first of 12 children born to the late Teodora A. and Antonio S. Torres. She is preceded in death by sisters Luisa and Rita Torres and brother Teodoro Torres. She is survived by Pedro, her husband of 70 years; and their 14 children, Joe (Marie) Monreal, Mike (Rosario) Monreal from San Antonio, Gabriel (Priscilla) Monreal from San Antonio, Anita (Jerry) Cook from Fort Worth, Petra (the late Joe) Montez, Janie Monreal, Angie (Jim) Gleeson, Nina (John) Ojeda, Sandy Garcia, Tony (Stella) Monreal from Houston, Frank Monreal, Terry (Jose) Mendoza, Carmen Guerrero, and Margaret (Jose) Ramirez; sisters, Simona Monreal, Victoria Flores, Benita Martinez, Maria Nina Requejo, and Antonia Ruiz; brothers, Epimenio, Alejandro, and Raul Torres; 27 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. Raised in the country weathering the Great Depression, she enjoyed riding horses and didn't feel very deprived as they were used to living off the land. She learned to be a tough survivor when faced with life's challenges. As a lifelong devout Catholic, her strong faith guided all aspects of her life. She and Pedro were married by the Mission Church on Wheels, lived briefly in Port Arthur and Killeen then made Austin their permanent home. She was among the first few original families who formed Guadalupe Mission Catholic Church in Garfield, Texas, Nuestra Senora De La Luz and Dolores Catholic Church in Montopolis. In 1950 she was a founding member of the Sociedad Guadalupanas, serving as president for many years. In addition to raising her family, she received certification from Southwest Texas State College and worked in the food service industry as a cook, caterer, supervisor, and manager. When retired she worked at Connelly Guerrero Senior Activity Center, taught arts and crafts, participated in field trips and ballet folklorico. She enjoyed her garden, pets, traveling, and especially the large festive family gatherings and celebrations. She is remembered as a loving, caring, generous and hard-working mother who had enough love in her heart for all. Pallbearers are her grandsons: Jimmy Monreal, Adrian Cook, Gabriel A. Monreal, Jacob Montez, Sr., Andrew Gleeson, Gregory M. Ojeda, Rudy M. Garcia, and Teddy M. Guzman. Recitation of the Rosary will be Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Dolores Catholic Church, 1111 Montopolis Drive, Austin, Texas. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Dolores Catholic Church. Internment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to Dr. David Hayes, Dr. Paul Moore, and Hospice of Austin for their loving care and kindness. Donations may be made in memory of Santos Torres Monreal to Meals on Wheels and More, 3227 East 5th Street, Austin, Texas, 78702, or online at www.mealsonwheelsandmore.org

As holidays approach this fall in 2024, we always recall the day you were born into this earthly world--the very next day, we celebrate your passing into eternal life. We cherish the holidays honoring family traditions while making new memories as your family continues to grow. All the new babies are such a delight, each with their own little personalities. One thing they have in common is their love for the parties at HQ just as you envisioned! Continue with your prayers to God on our behalf especially for good health. We love & miss you & daddy.

Happy Birthday in Heaven, mom! We celebrate the day that God entrusted you to Apa & Apa 100 years ago. We love & miss you, especially when the family gathers or when things go wrong and need your love, guidance & reassurance. You know when we need prayers to the Lord our God and I gratefully thank you for interceding, especially for the kids who are maneuvering through adulthood. Its been a rough journey for the extended family due to the pandemic but things are looking up. Will celebrate your special day at Mass. Love you, mom!

Please continue to intercede for us as we face any hardships this new year. We thank God for his many blessings and eagerly await the new babies expected this year! Love you mom!

Happy "Mother's Day Mom." Thinking of you not only today but everyday. I miss more today since we are unable to get together at HQ to celebrate due to this illness (Coronavirus) that has the world on hold. It is so different but one thing that is not different is the Love, caring, laughter & all the memories you left me. Remembering the fun times we had playing BINGO.That I will always carry your memories in my heart. Your Chapulines are now Jacob 17 & Julissa 15. They still remember & talk about you. Mom you also left them with such good memories. Mom thank you for watching, protecting, keeping us safe & healthy.
I Love You Mom & again Happy Mother's Day.

11th Anniversary of your passing into eternal life. Wow. I mostly think of you with fond memories of all the good times yet I still miss your laugh, phone calls & visits. I remember the time we went sledding on one of your visits and you screamed all the way down and ended up sideways in the snow with your feet in the air and we laughed and laughed! You are always in my heart as we continue with our lives without you, gathering at HQ for all the holidays just as you wished. Losing Phillip was tough for the family and several family members have faced health issues, but I know we can continue to count on you to be an intercessor in our time of need. For that, with a grateful heart, I thank God. Love you mom!

In some respects it seems like only yesterday that we bid you farewell but in reality it's been 10 years. We gathered at Mass in remembrance then enjoyed a smorgasbord at your house just as you would have liked..no shortage of food! We continue living our lives with the memories of your loving heart held tight. Thank you for continuing to intercede for us in all aspects this past year-- the many funerals (Raymond, Lina, Maria, Benita, Jim) as well as Sara's beautiful wedding & the many family gatherings at HQ. Love you and miss you, still.

You have been on my mind especially with my father-in-law's recent passing. I know you have reunited in friendship and even though many are missing him here we know that we have gained another intercessor. Love you, mom, and still miss you even after almost 10 years.

Remembered you on Mothers Day but kept postponing an entry as it was a very busy time. But I know you would have understood that we had a wedding coming up! I know you were there in spirit along with your picture on the memory display near the entrance of the venue. It was sad that no grandparents were present but such is life. Keep the newlyweds in your embrace as we wish them many years of happiness. Love you and still miss you!

Its been 9 years since you left but I continue to see you in my dreams. Your sister was missing you these past few days as she faced a most difficult time. We had a good visit with several of your sisters and couldn't help but feel your presence as I saw you in their eyes, their expressions, their smiles. Thank you God, for sisters. Love you, mom!

Thank you God, for my mother, for all that she did for us, all that she said to us (even though we were not happy about it at times, for all that she did not say as well as for all that she left undone--it gave us the privilege and responsibility to finish some of them. I also thank you God, for allowing me to become some of those good things that were my mother--especially those things that I did not yet have the wisdom to see in my youth. They sure have come in handy in raising my own children into adulthood. Thank you God, for my mother. AMEN

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, MOM! I love you and miss you, still.

It has been 8 long years since you left this earth and I still miss you. However, I offer up this suffering in my heart for the poor souls in purgatory. Plus, thinking of the freedom you gained to enjoy heaven and all its rewards sure helps to brush away the dark clouds and brighten my day! Love you, mom, as always.

Thank you, mom, for giving me the gift of life so many years ago today. When I heard your song at church today...sung in Polish, no less...I knew it was a sign from you wishing me a happy birthday! My heart felt at peace and it made my day. Love you, mom!

As Labor Day nears, I certainly appreciate all the work you did for us all. I don't know where you got the energy that kept us going even during the tough times. But I know you are now enjoying your rewards for a job well done! Thank you for being our messenger to God every time we pray in our time of need. Rachel is doing well in her recovery. God is good.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, MOM!!
I am reminiscing about past Mother's Days when I would order corsages for you and Ama and we would all go to Dolores Church early in the morning. Always an early riser, I ejoyed and treasured those quiet moments with you both. Thank you, mom for all you did for me and for your continued love and guidance from above.

Mom, I am sure you heard the news about Rachel. We are thankful to God for this opportunity for her. Please be an intercessor once again, along with La Virgen De Guadalupe and ask that God guide the hands of all the health care workers surrounding Rachel and that she be healed. In His name, we humbly ask.

Hi Mother Dear,
How could I forget today. It marks seven yrs since our Lord chose to take you to his Kingdom. I miss you Dearly, think about you everyday and miss our good times we shared (like playing Bingo). Hi Mama! I am enjoying the Christmas cactus you gave me a long time ago. It had not bloomed in years, but to my surprise, it is now full of beautiful blossoms as we approach the celebration of the birth of our Lord. I know its your way of saying "Merry Christmas--welcome home." I made tamales this week--they are good, but not as good as yours! Love you and miss you, still.

As in most holidays, you were on my mind this holiday season, remembering Christmases past. We gathered to make tamales and told stories to my children and guests about making tamales the old-fashioned way back in the day. Cooking in the big iron pot (pyla?) outdoors, going to Midnight Mass and coming home to a feast! So, thank you mom, for the memories and for sending us your love from above!

I celebrated your birthday at an early Mass on Saturday---I fondly remember just the 2 of us driving to Dolores Church early in the mornings and you bravely allowing me behind the wheel to drive the car most of the way back home! I hear the breakfast at Dolores in memory of you and dad was a huge success--thank you for your direction and inspiration. My quotes calendar had the following down on your birthday--so appropriate: KINDNESS IN WORDS CREATES CONFIDENCE, KINDNESS IN THINKING CREATES PROFOUNDNESS, KINDNESS IN GIVING CREATES LOVE. (Lao Tzu, ancient Chinese philosopher) Enough said!
Love you, mom

As Mother's Day approaches this beautiful spring amid beautiful weather and my flower-filled yard,I am reminded of your love for all growing things, including us. We sadly lost a loving mother and our light certainly was dimmed when you left this earth, but heaven was illuminated even more when you arrived for we gained an intercessor in Heaven. Thank you, mom, for continuing to help me from above. Happy Mother's Day. I love you!

These 2 little words, "Thank You" cannot adequately express the gratitude for the tremendous amount of love we experienced when you reached out to us during a most difficult time. We truly appreciated your kind words, hugs, thoughts, prayers, phone calls, cards, flowers, plants, Mass intentions, food, & donations to Meals on Wheels. We were humbled yet comforted to see God working through each one of you. It was amazing to see that so many people were somehow touched by our mother's life. May God blessings be upon you always.

Tony, I just read the obituary of your wonderful mother, and was truly humbled by such a loving, caring, generous woman; and the 70-years of marriage! (Proverbs 31:10-31) The scriptures speak of the "Virtuous Woman" - "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her". To all who loved Santos "Sandy" (Torres) Monreal, I say your blessed assurance is that upon her heavenly reward, she will stand before "The Master" to hear HIS words: "Well done, my good and faithful servant -(Matthew 25:13). Tony, my love to you, Stela, and family.

Sandy, & Mr EpimeneoTorres
I am so sorry to hear of you loss, she was a beautiful lady.
God is there
Reaching out to you
At this time of loss
He wants so much
To hold you close
And let the hurting stop
He sheds a tear
Each time you do
And feels your silent grief
Just know God’s love
Can reach right down
To the hurt buried deep.
