Outside of work, Holmes pursued his love of animals (especially cats, big and small) and world travel. He served from 2012 to 2016 as a member of the St. Louis Zoological Park Subdistrict Commission (the governing body of the Zoo) and was elected its chair in 2014. He continued as an Emeritus member until 2020. Prior to that he served on the St. Louis Zoo Association Board for 11 years.
Holmes graduated first in his MBA class at Columbia University after receiving a Bachelor of Commerce degree with honors from McGill University. He completed high school at The Hill School, where he later served on its Board of Directors.
Family members will hold a private service over Thanksgiving weekend, followed by a December 1 Celebration of Life by invitation. Anyone wishing to honor Holmes may make a contribution of any size to the St. Louis Zoo (Tribute Fund Saint Louis Zoo) or The Hill School (
