Nikita was one of my best friends. He was always someone who was more than willing to hear what going on in your life and just be there to support me whenever I was in need. There are not many people out there doing everything they could to make sure the world is a better place, but he was one of them. Rest easy my man. I miss you.

The first time we met, Nikita didn't have any English yet and I'm afraid my Russian was as non-existent then as it is now. We spent the afternoon without the need for explanations - turning cartwheels in the backyard and battling chess pieces in my bedroom - unbeknownst to me, the only time I'd ever get close to matching him at the game. Our meetings over the years were as sporadic and unexpected but just as inexplicably familiar as that first. It was like I was speaking to a cousin. It was impossible to feel uncomfortable with him. We were like different species of sprouts growing next to each other in the same garden, both far away from where we´d begun.
Nikita - as he shared himself with me - was intelligent, relentless, ambitious, with unflinching honesty about what he had experienced in that short part of his shortened life. He was incredibly intense and gave from that seemingly bottomless energy to anyone he could. He was like a comet - blazing across the sky with so much heat that it really put the rest of us ordinary night lights to shame.
For me, it was reassuring to know he was there. Whether that was in front of me, chatting excitedly about any and everything, or off living his life with the same pace and passion with which he spoke. But with every reunion, the fact remained we shared the same fundamentally life-changing situation, experienced different versions of the same origin, and his memory holds the reverence and longing one has for a lost teammate - someone who has shared and discussed something with you which often makes others uncomfortable. He was younger, but I looked up to him as someone who had experienced things I couldn´t even imagine at the time but who was still grabbing the life he had been presented with with both hands.
I wonder what he would have been, what he would have done.
All this to say he's not forgotten. I carry him with me still. He was not an angel, but he was like something out of the heavens. I wish I'd given him a hug to tell him I understood.

Our son played on the chess team with Nikita. He was a fun, engaging kid. He had a remarkable story that is a great example for any young person. So sorry. He will be missed by many.

My family is saddened to hear of Nikita's passing. Our children had fun times with him at SLU summer camp. My son remembers his funny stories and the way he makes interesting faces that made them laugh. He lived an amazing life and will be greatly missed.

My son, Jackson, was in Nikita's group at SLU Summer Camp nearly all summer long and just loved him so much. Nikita was so great with the kids...and not a bad chess player, so my 8 year old son says. I, too had the pleasure of getting to know him over the summers...what a great young man, who will be so, so missed by the kids, families, and entire Saint Louis University community that came in contact with him.

I am extremely saddened to hear of Nikita's passing. Please accept my deepest condolences. I was blessed to know him ever so briefly, while attending Westminster. The smile filled with such brightness will truly be missed. I am thankful for the lessons he gave while discussing life in all its adversity. I will never forget you.

Im so heartbroken and sorry for your loss. I knew Nikita for a year at Westminster before I dropped out, but some memories of him will always stick with me, like talking music or the times we got together and jammed on guitar and bass. His musical ability amazed me and he was always a joy to talk to. May God grant peace to the Thompson family and Nikitas friends, and through His mercy grant him everlasting life.

Nikita and I were friends. I had the privilege to play music and talk about life with him. He was always free of judgement and witty. He produced smiles on all of us around him and was vehement about helping his friends. Nikita was a loyal scholar, and a good man. My heart does out to you. We lost a valuable person, and I lost a friend.

Words can not express my sorrow. I remember all the trips to Vianney early in the morning. Even all those chess trips. I still remember sitting on the bench in front of he school waiting for our kids to be let out, you and I talking. My prayers are with you.

I know I am a mother and I know how you must feel. May God guide you and protect you and help you through this difficult period.

Nancy, words cannot express how sorry I am to hear of the passing of your bright, handsome young man. I remember Nikita's tremendous math skills, and how he won "pi" day at Cathedral School because he remembered the most digits (he even beat my son William!) Know you are very much in my thoughts and prayers, and if there is anything I can do, please don't hesitate to call. I send you much love and God's comforting peace. Sincerely, Sally Macke
