Ernst Kofod Obituary

Ernst Kristian Kofod

Ernst Kristian Kofod passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 17.

Born on the rocky, windswept island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, Ernie got his basic education on the island before departing for a machinist's apprenticeship in Copenhagen. He went on to engineering college and received his degree in mechanical engineering, specializing in industrial refrigeration. In 1948, he landed a job as a refrigeration manager in Calcutta, India. After three eventful years in India, he was offered a job in America, the land of opportunity, so he immigrated to Waynesboro, PA. In 1960, his company sent him to Singapore to manage the company's business in the Far East. He held various positions in the Orient based in Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, ultimately serving as director of industrial refrigeration for the Asia Pacific Zone for Carrier Corporation.

In 1991, he returned to Charlotte, NC, then to retirement in Tallahassee in 1992.

For 19 years, rain or shine, he delivered meals, birthday cakes, dog food, Coca-Cola, changed light bulbs -- whatever his clients needed -- for Meals on Wheels. His clients were his friends. When health issues forced him to discontinue, it was a loss for Ernie and his clients.

On Saturday mornings the members of the Seminole Schutzhund Club could look out and see Ernie and his dog ready to train and compete. Some very endearing friendships were established there.

He was urbane, sophisticated, socially adept, loyal -- but most of all he was a very good man.

He is survived by his wife, Maudrey, his daughter Esther Whitfield (Ron), his stepsons Scott and Chris Taranto, his granddaughter Alia Fathaly Alston (Matt), great-grandchildren Maia and Jax and his grandson Telly Fathaly in Atlanta, his granddaughter Pernille Kofod (Kim), grandson-in-law Ronni Abergel and four great-grandchildren Lola, Dexter, Emily and Amelia in Copenhagen, and his faithful German Shepherd, Norick.

A memorial service will be held at Governor's Inn, 209 South Adams St., on Saturday December 6, from 2-4pm.

I do not know Ernst, but his widow, Maudry. I taught school with her at Raa Middle School. Just wanted to send my condolences at the death of her husband. I was notified of her loss through a mutual friend and teacher. May God's blessings be with you and your children and know that my prayers and God's peace are with you.
