Helmut Langer Obituary

Waterford - Helmut Langer, 86, of Waterford, died peacefully on Dec. 31, 2011, after a short illness.

He was born in Berlin, Germany, and came to the United States in 1953, to work as an electrical engineer at Machlett Laboratories in Stamford, a subsidiary of the Raytheon Corp. He was a senior development engineer and section head responsible for electron tube manufacturing relating to x-ray and high-power transmitting tubes. He was the holder or co-holder of seven patents. Before coming to the U.S., he was an engineer at Telefunken in Berlin, where he helped develop transmitting tubes used in television and broadcasting applications. He had a degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University in Berlin.

After his retirement from Raytheon, he became a stained glass artist, designing and creating original stained glass pieces while also doing stained glass repairs. He was an avid golfer and tennis player.

Helmut and his wife, Sue Langer, were together for more than 35 years and shared a wonderful marriage and a full and interesting life in Stamford and Waterford, where they moved full-time in 2007. He particularly loved being near the water, where he could enjoy the shifting tides, the bird life, the sunrises and sunsets, and swims in the Long Island Sound.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Petra Langer of Marblehead, Mass., and Elyse Curcio of Stamford; sons-in-law, Phillips Axten and Anthony Curcio; and four beloved grandchildren, Simon, Karen, Alison, and Emily.

A celebration of his life will be held this summer in Waterford.

Dear Sue, Petra and family,
Our deepest sympathies to all of you during this difficult time. Helmut was such a good friend to our family. I will never forget him dressed as Santa Claus for Christmas when we were little kids. He loved to visit and enjoy kaffeezeit with my parents. Then He and my dad would smoke their pipes and have good conversation which sometimes had long periods of silence between words. There must have been a lot of deep thinking. Helmut was my moms adopted little brother since her own, Heinz, died in Russia during the war. She would say that often and remind us that they were both from Berlin. Our prayers, thoughts and memories are with you always.
