Catherine Manning Obituary

SHELTON - Catherine C. Manning, 98, of Shelton died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. The Rev. James Janovec will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Grand Island.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at the church, concluding with a parish rosary at 7. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry in 1998, and a son, Wayne Manning.

Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin and Betty Manning and Myron and Kathy Manning, all of Shelton; a daughter and son-in-law, Alleen and Richard Wilks of Omaha; and one brother, Laverne Jansen of Grand Island.

Additional survivors include eight grandchildren, Randy Manning, Jason Manning, Darrick Manning, Holly Manning, Scott Manning, Matt Manning, Robin Wilks and Duane Wilks; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Manning was born Nov. 3, 1912, at Chapman to John and Clara (Hansjosten) Jansen. She grew up in St. Libory and received her education at St. Libory Catholic School. Catherine married Henry Manning in 1935 at St. Libory. They farmed near St. Libory and later farmed near Palmer. They moved to their farm north of Shelton in 1962 where they made their home for their remaining years.

Catherine worked as a cook at the Grand Island Veterans Home for approximately ten years in the late 60's and early 70's, as well as helping on the family farm.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Shelton and the Council of Catholic Women.

Catherine enjoyed plants, gardening, farm work, and was an excellent cook. She especially loved time she spent with her grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jill Fitzgerald; one brother and four sisters.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

I have such wonderful memories at Catherine & Hank's when I was a child. Even though I was a "step" I was always made to feel a part of the family. The big family gatherings were so festive and she did some kind of magic with her garden veggies. I'll always remember her sweet nature and genuine hospitality and I celebrate her life along with you.

Catherine always had great card parties at her house and the best peanut butter and banana sandwiches! She took great pride in her family and will be missed very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
