The Hogan family moved to Huntsville, AL when Sean was in junior high school. He graduated from Grissom High School and the University of Alabama - Huntsville. After working as a booking agent for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and SIRSI Corporation, he attended graduate school at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. After receiving the degree M.S.LS., he started his career as a professional librarian at Brentwood Library. In 2001 he joined the staff of Woodward Library at Austin Peay State University. At the time of his death, he was their special collections librarian.

Sean was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served with the Luke Chapter of the Altar Guild and was an enthusiastic supporter of supper clubs. He was a voracious reader with a taste for everything from the New York Times best sellers to classics. He particularly enjoyed collecting deluxe editions of classic comic strips. Sean had a wide range of musical interests from country to Celine Dion to classical. He was a season subscriber and supporter of the Nashville Symphony and the Gateway Chamber Orchestra. In May, 2019 he and James spent a week in New York watching the entire Wagner Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera. Using the skills he had learned at Royal Caribbean, he delighted in planning cruises. He and James took at least once international trip each year. Their most recent adventure consisted of three weeks in Japan in the fall of 2019. Sean was devoted to his Schnauzer babies Boris, Bosco and Bama. They were all rescue dogs who preceded him to doggie heaven. He had a deep sense of compassion, which he expressed by supporting a child at World Vision and the FUEL program at his church. His intelligence, quick wit, quirky sense of humor and general sense of whimsy made a lasting impression on all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
