Marian Shapiro Obituary

Shapiro, Marian (1919-2015)

Marian Woodward Shapiro passed away in Baltimore, MD, on Sunday morning, October 25, at the age of 96. Marian, the middle of nine children, spent her childhood in Salem, NJ. After studying art at Oberlin and Skidmore colleges, she graduated from Skidmore in 1938. In 1942, Marian married Jacob Shapiro (1918-1970) when he was an officer in the Army Signal Corps. After several years in different cities, they settled in Oshkosh, WI, in 1956. Marian lived there until her retirement in 1984, when she joined a beloved older sister in Cockeysville, MD. Marian derived much joy from her long career as an elementary school teacher at Read School in Oshkosh. Always observant and well-read, she had considerable talent as an artist, and enjoyed many hours working with ceramics and painting with watercolors and pastels. Also, her great love of flowers and trees made nature walks with her informative and fun. Marian adored her grandchildren and was always generous and supportive of her family. Her calm outlook on life, unique interests, and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by her friends and family. Marian is survived by her three children, David, Daniel, and Anne, and by Daniel's wife Amanda Susan Ralph and their two children, Rebecca Grace Shapiro and Jacob James Shapiro.

The family is mourning privately. Condolences may be sent to Daniel Shapiro at [email protected].
