Dale Rider Obituary

Our father, Orson Dale "Beef" Rider, has entered eternal life on Thursday, May 29, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. His spirit is carried on by his 3 children, Rory Leonard Rider, Kasey Dale Rider and Amber Lee Rider Peterman. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and two siblings, Rosalie Kirtley and Susan Tebalt. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Elbert McDonald "Mack" Rider, his son Matt Boyd Rider and granddaughter Misty Nicole Rider.

Dale was born in Kanab, Utah on April 2nd, 1941 and was the second child of Elbert McDonald "Speed" Rider and Beth Sorensen Rider.

During his younger years his family moved from place to place during the days of World War II before finally settling into Cedar City, Utah. He grew up there, attending East Elementary, Cedar City Junior High and Cedar City High School. He was popular in High School and was one of the top players on his football team. He was involved in track and field specializing in shot putt and discus. When it came to high school wrestling, he was the "Top Dog", "The Man to Beat". He took home "All State" in the unlimited category two years in a row. At one occasion at a wrestling match, he was announced by someone in the audience, "Hey, they brought "The Beef!!"" and it stuck, hence the earning of his nick name "Beef".

After graduating from Cedar City High, he attended one year at College of Southern Utah, which is currently named Southern Utah University.

He married his High School sweet heart Judy Leonard and together they had 4 children: Rory, Matt, Kasey and Amber.

They started out their married life living in Page, Arizona for a year in 1961-1962. They then moved to Clearfield, Utah and shortly after to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1962-1966. Work there was eventually getting hard to find towards the end of 1966. They moved back to their home town, Cedar City, from 1966-1969. When jobs ran scarce again, they made the leap and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Work there was plentiful and they lived there since.

Dale was a brick and block mason and specialized in building beautiful custom fireplaces, veneers, walkways and of course, block walls. Throughout his life he created many of the most amazing brickwork structures in the valley of Las Vegas and other locations. With his huge hands, he would pick up a brick, toss it around until he found just the right side, and then with a single tap, give it a whack to make it the right size, two swipes of mortar, and into place went another piece of his canvas. He was a brick and rock artist and built countless fireplaces, leaving a legacy of his work behind.

Dale loved to work on cars, engines, and convert old cars into Hot Rods. He taught his kids about engines, all the way down to overhauling them, mounting them back into the cars, and to the final stage of driving them away.

We have been blessed to learn many valuable lessons from our father during his 73 years of his life on how to work hard, how to think and how to create. He was a man of many talents and a Jack of all Trades.

For the last 15 years of his life, he spent his time driving concrete trucks and then advanced into semi-trucks, over the road and long hauls.

A father, grandfather, husband and a brother, who loved his family very much, he will be greatly missed. Now he can rest in peace and be able to be with and watch over his family in spirit, wherever they may be.

His funeral will take place in the LDS Church building at 256 S. 900 W., Cedar City, Utah on June 14th, 2014 at 11:00 am. Viewing will start at 9:30am at the church. Graveside services will be in the Cedar City Cemetery following the funeral. Arrangements were made with Mosdell Mortuary of Kanab.

I was just a small boy when we lived next to Dale's parents in the Kenny Apartments but I do remember Beef as his mother called him picking me up and carrying me as if I was just a feather. I am sorry for your loss and my prayers are with your family at this time
