Hal Campbell Obituary

Hal Kirkham Campbell

Cedar City - Hal Kirkham Campbell, 93, passed away November 3, 2020 at his home. He was born 17 March, 1927, the son of Ezra Carvel Campbell and Vilda Kirkham, the parents of 3 children: Hal, Brent, and Kay (deceased). He spent his early life in Idaho Falls and Preston, Idaho; Consumers, and Salt Lake City, Utah.

He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Great Britain Mission where he met Joan Day. Joan emigrated to the United States soon after Hal's release and married Hal in the Salt Lake City Temple in November, 1950. Hal and Joan are the parents of four children: Devon (deceased), Colin (Dianne Tibbles), Laird (Tanya Shaw), Caroleen (Allan Lee); the grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of 24. The Campbell family lived in Salt Lake City, Utah; Big Piney, Wyoming; Murray, and Cedar City, Utah.

Hal was an educator, teaching since 1966 at SUSC (SUU) where he taught composition, theory, history and piano. He served as Music Department Chair and Dean of Arts and Letters. Hal was instrumental in developing the music program, where his energy, enthusiasm, dedication and love for his students led him to receive many outstanding awards.

Hal contributed significantly to music in the community. He composed music for, directed, accompanied, and served on boards for the Orchestra of Southern Utah, Master Singers, the Manning/Halverson Oratorio and numberless individuals and groups.

Hal's faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was the driving force in his life and the motive behind everything he did. He served in Elder's Quorum Presidencies, Young Men's Presidencies, Bishoprics and as Bishop. He also served on the Church General Music Committee. One of his greatest joys was Home Teaching and he loved the families he taught. He had a voracious appetite for secular and religious knowledge. Hal and Joan served a mission to the London Temple later in life.

We wish to thank Marie Prince and Iron County Home Health for service to Hal.

A viewing will be held Saturday, November 7th, at the Southern Utah Mortuary from 9 to 10:30 a.m. with a funeral service following at 11:00. (Seating may be limited) Interment will be held at the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. Online condolences can be sent to www.sumortuary.com.

Dr. Hal Campbell was my music teacher for three years at Stewart School. I was in his mixed chorus, band, musical theatre production, composition and musical theatre writing classes. There may not be many schools where you can get all that in seventh, eighth and ninth grades. Stewart School only operated for one more year after I graduated. I have always known that SUU was blessed to have him. I've been a music teacher for many years, and Hal Campbell helped me on the road to that career. I look forward to seeing him again in the next life.

Mr. Campbell was our music teacher at Stewart school on the U of U campus. His love of music was infectious. He assigned me to sing tenor as many of the boys hadn’t changed voice registers yet. I had no business playing cello in orchestra, but he encouraged everyone to participate. Several years ago he attended one of our class reunions. What a treat. He made a lasting impression on me. Rest In Peace, Mr. Campbell.

Hal was my music and chorus teacher at Stewart School from kindergarten through 9th grade. He was simply a brilliant teacher. He had a rich, nuanced curriculum that taught instrumental music and choral basics along with composition and social analysis.
Where else could you learn the Red Army Marching song during the McCarthy era? Where else, at a time of great racism and automatic religiosity, could you sing "It Ain't Necessarily So"? Where else could you have a teacher that composed an operetta about the extinction of our indigenous peoples? The songs we learned made us think critically and compassionately about the world we lived in. Superlative teaching and a great heart. We were so very fortunate.

He was far and away the best teacher I ever had. Most of what I know about music, he taught me. I was a student of his and took 2nd year music theory and music history (at the same time). I can still remember him playing part of some composition that he would think of as part of a lecture and while playing say "I don't think this is the right key, but. . .", and then go on to explain the point he was making. I only found out at this writing that he had passed. He is missed!

Wow, to have Hal Campbell no longer among us is a sad thought to consider -- but thanks be to God that his spirit lives on! I was blessed when my family moved into the ward in which Hal & Joan lived. Hal was an amazing mentor in my musical development. During the last few years of his life, I was blessed to keep in contact with him occasionally. Thank you, Hal, for being a positive influence in my life!

We are grateful for the blessing of memories that we can keep with us forever. We and our family have many happy memories of when Uncle Hal & Auntie Joan made the journey across the pond to visit England and we were able to share our homes with them, spend time together and visit familiar places. We are also grateful for technology which gave us the opportunity to keep in touch more often. Uncle Hal was a spiritual giant and also a diligent researcher of family history and we are grateful for his contributions to our family history. We are sure that he is sad to leave his family here behind but he will have great joy at being reunited with Joan and his family which have gone before him. May you all be comforted at this time as you grieve at the loss of a wonderful and treasured Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, Uncle and dear friend.

Hal and I shared a love for the family history of the Campbells and many related lines. We exchanged letters, phone calls, flash drives and emails. I will miss him, but I have so much of the work he did, I'll remember him each time I read about our shared ancestors.

We love Dr. Campbell! He was our piano and music theory teacher at SUU. He had such a love for music, learning, and life! He had such a great impact on our growth as musicians and music teachers. He also had a great influence on our son, Joshua. He taught Joshua private composition lessons. We also appreciate the great testimony he had of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He lived as a true follower of Jesus Christ! We will miss him so much! (David and Latanna Palmer)

Even seen from a distance Hal lived a most remarkable life. In our interactions with him he was always supportive and encouraging and we felt his love across the miles. His testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ was sure and his living of it exemplary. We are grateful for those times when Hal and Joan made the long journey back to visit us in the motherland and hold dear the choice memories of our visit to be with them and their family. We rejoice that they are now reunited and our wish for you as his family is that your faith may sustain you as time and that you may be buoyed by by your joyful and happy memories of a great man. God bless,

Hal was such an amazing, talented and friendly gentleman. Whenever I would see him he would greet me like I was his best friend even though I had been just one of the thousands of students that he taught over the years at SUSC(SUU). I know that he treated everyone that same way. He was such a great influence for good through his wonderful music talents and by his positive example and love of the Gospel. My heartfelt condolences go to you, his family. Sincerely, Steve Matheson

I am sorry to hear about the passing of such a great man. He and Joan showed me so much kindness as a young educator just getting started. I appreciate all the confidence he had in me, especially when he handed off his Music History class to me. Rest in peace and may the family experience God's everlasting comfort and blessing.

To the Campbell Family: Pat and I thought the world of your Dad (and Mom). We were colleagues at SUU for four years. Hal was a great mentor and a fabulous composer who merited a wider audience. As I told Virginia Stitt, I hear his voice and infectious laugh in my head. We were in a study group together for almost three years before we left Cedar City. Your parents always had great insights and were so welcoming and gracious. What a reunion they must be having. With sympathy,--Mark & Pat Mecham

I remember growing up always being in awe of Mr. Campbell. As a young musician (violin and then cello) he was so unconditionally supportive and was always so friendly and kind - even to a little kid carrying her instrument around the SUU music building. I loved seeing him at Orchestra of Southern Utah practices and performances and he made me feel welcome even at a young age when I was probably more of a burden then asset to the orchestra. He truly fostered in others an attitude of "you can do it!" and encouraged me later as I was performing concertos and more advanced repetoire. After moving away from Cedar City and eventually joining the church in Pennsylvania, I was so happy when I was in a stake choir in the Salt Lake area and we worked on a beautiful rendition of "The Morning Breaks," arranged by Hal Campbell! It was so fun to still see that connection to Cedar City music even though many years had passed. Thank you for sharing Hal with all Cedar City musicians. I know that his positivity and kindness will be sorely missed. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

Hal is my cousin (but a little more like an uncle as he was 25 years older than I). Many years ago I was serving as the stake primary music director. I sent Hal and Joan a cassette tape asking them to record on it how they came to compose two songs in the Primary Songbook
(The Sacred Grove, and The Priesthood is Restored). I so appreciated them for taking the time to do this for me. I was able to share it with some of the primaries in my stake.
I also appreciated the family history work that Hal did, and loved many of his emails where he shared poems written my his mother (my Aunt Vilda) and also the pictures he posted (many of which were of my own mother—sister to Vilda).
It is nice to think of his reunion with his loved ones. They will be reunited with a wonderful man!

To our sweet brother and sister-in-law. We are so sorry for your loss. Hal was a one-of-a-kind beautiful person. He contributed so much to all of our lives by just being around him. His smile is and will always be contagious, he reminds us so much of our Dad. Hal is now sharing that smile with all his loved ones on the other side. His contribution to music throughout his life will keep him alive in the hearts of all those who knew him. He was indeed a great man, leaving a great family to finish their missions on earth. Keep his smile with you always,
