I am so sorry...I met Margaret (and Robert) when they came to Shreveport to buy a puppy from me. My Rottweiler (the dad) had sired a litter of beautiful puppies, and I had the pick of the litter to sell. Margaret fell in love with the puppy, and I thought she was so sweet, and would give him a good home, I ended up giving her the puppy. She wrote me a few times after than, telling me how wonderful the dog was and how much they loved "Studley", I think was the name they gave him...I thought of her from time to time, (after Robert had explained to me who they were and had asked if I had seen the movie), and wondered how a mother (or father, for that matter) could cope with the loss of a child. They seemed to be such kind people, but also must have been very strong people. God speed, Margaret.

Mr Harling, Bobby, John and family. I am sorry to hear about your loss. You are all in my prayers and thoughts. I did not realize that Margaret had died until I was researching some of the Faulkner-Harling lines from Edgefield. Again, you all are in my prayers.

I'm so sad. I just now saw that she had died. She was in the same ward as my dad before he died. I just loved watching how excited she would get when her husband would come. They were like 2 teenagers...

I met this lovely woman five years ago while visiting Natchitoces on a Steel Magnolia pilgrimage. A few days ago, I lost my 14-year-old nephew in a tragic drowning. I take comfort in the strength Mrs. Harling exhibited in her life and I imagine that the mother and child reunion between Mrs. Harling and Susan was the greatest heaven has ever seen. My sympathies to the family. Michaél Elaine Alegria, Spokane, Washington

May the Lord Bless you during this time of great loss. Even thought I never met Mrs. Harling or any of the family, I like millions of others feel as if we "know" her through watching "Steel Magnolia". It is a movie that my family has watched so many time that we know exactly what is going to be said in each scene to the point that we have been guilty of using some of the expressions in our own daily lives---and people know exactly what we are talking about. Celebrate the love, laughter, and happy memories of your wife, mom, grandmother, and friend to so many. Also know that there are millions of people sharing your loss.
With love from another "Steel Magnolia".

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Sister in Arms, Margaret Jones Harling. To her family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Margaret. And to Margaret it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank her for her dedicated and selfless service she rendered to her country during WW-II while serving asa nurse in the U. S. Army Medical Corps. Margaret, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Margaret's family and loved ones.
