Margaret Harling Obituary

Margaret Jones Harling

Funeral services for Margaret Jones Harling will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church in Natchitoches, with Rev. Kathy Muder officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on August 21, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church in Natchitoches.

Margaret Jones Harling was born on July 16, 1923 in Cave Spring, Georgia. After graduating Cave Spring High School she entered a three year nursing program at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia and then enrolled in the Army Nurse Corps where she earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After her service she obtained a bachelor's in nursing from the University of Georgia where she met Robert M. Harling, Jr. and they married on the day of her graduation in 1950.

They had three children Robert III, Susan and John. They moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana in 1966 where she continued her career in psychiatric nursing at the Natchitoches Mental Health Clinic and Evergreen Ministries. She received her master's in nursing in 1978. She retired in 1995. Margaret was active in her faith as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Natchitoches as well as numerous charities such as Threads of Love which sews warm clothing for babies in neo-natal ICU units. She also held leadership positions in the Association of the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches (APHN) where she chaired restoration projects and organized children tours of historic Natchitoches. She was a longtime member of PEO and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Margaret was a loving wife and mother. She loved spending time with her grandchildren Robert, Susan and Jack. She was a talented baker known far and wide for her dinner rolls. Her coconut cake was highlighted in New York Times.

Margaret, along with her daughter Susan are the original Steel Magnolias. Margaret's love and determination through difficult times inspired her son, Bobby, to create the play of the same name. Later Margaret used the opportunities provided by the success of the play and movie to raise awareness and funding for juvenile diabetes and kidney research. Margaret has set an example that continues to inspire many to live a full and rich life.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Robert M. Harling, Jr.; her sons, Robert M. Harling, III of New York, New York and John Forbes Harling and his wife Elizabeth of Garland, Texas; a sister, Emmalee Highnote and a brother, Tudor Jones. She was blessed with 3 grandchildren, Robert Robinson of Austin, Texas, John Forbes Harling, Jr. of Garland, Texas and Susan Kiturah Harling of Garland, Texas. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Laura Susan Robinson and her brother, John Calvin Jones.

In lieu of floral contributions the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Natchitoches, 114 Bienville St, Natchitoches, LA 71457

I am so sorry...I met Margaret (and Robert) when they came to Shreveport to buy a puppy from me. My Rottweiler (the dad) had sired a litter of beautiful puppies, and I had the pick of the litter to sell. Margaret fell in love with the puppy, and I thought she was so sweet, and would give him a good home, I ended up giving her the puppy. She wrote me a few times after than, telling me how wonderful the dog was and how much they loved "Studley", I think was the name they gave him...I thought of her from time to time, (after Robert had explained to me who they were and had asked if I had seen the movie), and wondered how a mother (or father, for that matter) could cope with the loss of a child. They seemed to be such kind people, but also must have been very strong people. God speed, Margaret.

Mr Harling, Bobby, John and family. I am sorry to hear about your loss. You are all in my prayers and thoughts. I did not realize that Margaret had died until I was researching some of the Faulkner-Harling lines from Edgefield. Again, you all are in my prayers.

I'm so sad. I just now saw that she had died. She was in the same ward as my dad before he died. I just loved watching how excited she would get when her husband would come. They were like 2 teenagers...

I met this lovely woman five years ago while visiting Natchitoces on a Steel Magnolia pilgrimage. A few days ago, I lost my 14-year-old nephew in a tragic drowning. I take comfort in the strength Mrs. Harling exhibited in her life and I imagine that the mother and child reunion between Mrs. Harling and Susan was the greatest heaven has ever seen. My sympathies to the family. Michaél Elaine Alegria, Spokane, Washington

May the Lord Bless you during this time of great loss. Even thought I never met Mrs. Harling or any of the family, I like millions of others feel as if we "know" her through watching "Steel Magnolia". It is a movie that my family has watched so many time that we know exactly what is going to be said in each scene to the point that we have been guilty of using some of the expressions in our own daily lives---and people know exactly what we are talking about. Celebrate the love, laughter, and happy memories of your wife, mom, grandmother, and friend to so many. Also know that there are millions of people sharing your loss.
With love from another "Steel Magnolia".

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Sister in Arms, Margaret Jones Harling. To her family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Margaret. And to Margaret it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank her for her dedicated and selfless service she rendered to her country during WW-II while serving asa nurse in the U. S. Army Medical Corps. Margaret, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Margaret's family and loved ones.
