John Allgood, Jr. Obituary

John Robert Allgood, Jr.
Aug. 21, 1915 - May 16, 2012
John Robert Allgood, Jr. (Bob), 96, of Vallejo, passed away on May 16. He is survived by his two daughters, Catherine Allgood-Mellema (James) of Sitka, Alaska, and Mary Jannisse (Bill) of Vacaville; and by his son, John R. Allgood, III (Casey) of Vallejo. He also leaves three grandchildren, Shelby Olrich of Sitka, Joshua and Jammie Jannisse of Vacaville, plus two great-grandchildren living in Alaska.
Bob was predeceased by his wife, Claire, in Dec. 2009.
Born to John R. and Emma Dempsey Allgood on Aug. 21, 1915, in Dallas, Oregon, Bob was the grandson of Oregon Trail pioneers. He attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University), graduating with a B.A in Business and a teaching credential. After teaching high school for two years in Newman, CA., Bob joined the U.S. Army in 1942, serving honorably with First Army Headquarters until his discharge in 1946.
In March 1947, he married Claire Schafer, whom he met while both were teaching at Woodland High School. They moved to Oregon where Bob worked with his father in the family's printing shop, but eventually returned to Claire's hometown of Vallejo, where Bob taught at Vallejo High School. He joined the faculty of Vallejo Junior College (now Solano Community College), teaching business and applied psychology courses, also working as a counselor for several years. After becoming head of the Business Department, he retired from teaching in the mid-1970's.
During the 1960's and 1970's, Bob and Claire owned and operated The Owl in the Attic gift shop on Marin Street in downtown Vallejo. For almost 30 years, they spent part of the winter months in Mexico during which they developed close friendships with many of the residents of San Patricio, the small coastal town that became a home away from home for them. Although their last visit to Mexico was in 2007, Bob kept in contact with those friends.
Bob and Claire were both ardent supporters of Vallejo. Many dear and long lasting friendships resulted from their involvement in numerous local organizations including the Navy League; the Downtown Association; the Symphony Association; the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum; and the Vallejo Heritage Association.  Bob was a long-time member of the Vallejo Transit Board, and remained active and involved in local affairs up to the time of his death.
A Requiem Mass will be held at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 1250 Oakville Grade, Oakville, on Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m. The Reverend Fr. Michael Mautner will celebrate; a brief reception will follow at the church. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum.
Arrangements are being handled by Struble Family Services.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. He and your mother were two of the most charming people I ever met. I knew them from the Owl in the Attic and did house sitting and helped serve and bartend at some of their parties. They taught me so much about graciousness and welcome. They are much missed

Bob was one of the last true Vallejoans. I had the pleasure of serving with him on the 1st Vallejo Archetectural Commission and of knowing him and Clare for many years. He will be sorely missed, but his memory will live forever. My wife and I offer our deepest condolences to his family.
