John Burke Obituary

BURKE John Philip Burke Jr. (Jack), 81, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Jack was born December 4, 1933 in Baltimore, MD, attended St. Bernard School, graduated from Loyola Blakefield and from Loyola University, Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland High School ice hockey all-star team, played lacrosse at Loyola University, for the Maryland Lacrosse Club after graduation, and earned all-star status four times in field and box lacrosse. He graduated from the ROTC program with a DMG designation and served as a Guided Missile Unit Commander in the 36th Missile Battalion at the rank of First Lieutenant. He began his professional career in 1957 as Vice President of Weaver Brothers Inc. and became Executive Vice President of The Rouse Company in Columbia, MD in 1968. He later became President of Maryland National Financial Corporation. He moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL in 1995 as President of Barnett Annuities Corporation in Jacksonville, FL. Upon retirement, he became a Realtor with Stockton Realty Group and Ponte Vedra Club Realty. Jack served as Chairman of the Insurance Committee of the Mortgage Bankers Association, the American Bankers Association, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and the Consumer Credit Insurance Association. He was President of the Maryland Chapter of the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors of the Ponte Vedra Beach Chamber of Commerce and was active in the National Lacrosse Foundation. An avid golfer, he was a 40 year member of the Baltimore Country Club, and the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna; stepson, Blake Korchun; stepdaughter, Whitney Korchun; sons, John P. Burke III, Brian M. Burke (Lisa), Michael J. Burke (Melissa); daughter, Tice Burke Pell (Peter); and 11 grandchildren: Paul, Molly, Bridget, Maggie, Emma, Sam, Kyle, Matthew, Sarah, Katherine, and Carter. He is predeceased by Mary Christine Burke and Stacy Burke Danko, both victims of Cystic Fibrosis. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Oncology staff at the Mayo Clinic for their continued care and support over the last several years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17 at Sawgrass Beach Pavilion at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Maryland Chapter, 10626 York Road, Suite A, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Jack was a classmate of my father (Bob Rock) at Loyola. After moving to Jacksonville in 1991 he and my were able to connect. I played footbal with Jack (III?) at Rodger's Forge. My dad passed away in 2018. Go Dons!
