In my faith tradition, today is the first "yahrzeit" - anniversary of the death - of my dear friend and best boss ever, Art Pardee. I still think of him often - when passing in or around his native New Haven, when thinking of my days at the National Science Foundation, and especially when thinking these days of the basic decency of the American people. Art was the most decent person I have ever known. Zichrono l'vracha - may his memory always be a blessing.

It is with great sadness I say good bye to Mr. Pardee, I can not express my sadness without sharing my love, respect and gratefulness for having known him these many years. Mr. Pardee is the example all men should strive to achieve as a husband, father and man of kindness. I do not have a memory of him without that wonderful smile! No matter the circumstances of life he was always finding joy to encourage others.
Much love,
Tiffany Preston

Art Pardee was the best boss I ever had, and my first boss in the Federal Government. He was exceedingly wise and incredibly patient. He believed in bringing out the best in people and gave his new employees major responsibilities at the starting gate - just as he was given at the very beginning of his career. He always complemented his assignments to his staff with gentle but clear guidance ("you might want to try this"), even when they made huge mistakes (and defended them), and complimented them - but not excessively - for their achievements. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone (though he often described people he worked with to a tee, but charitably) and never got angry with anyone. I kept in touch with Art in his later years and was always astonished with his crystal-clear memory to the very end and his sage observations. He was my supervisor for only three short years, but when you have a great boss early in your career, it sticks with you for life as an example to follow. I will miss him deeply and think of him often. When calling him at home, it was his wife of many years, Mary Katherine, who picked up the phone, and she and I had many deep and heartfelt conversations about life and values centered around the great modern Jewish philosopher, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. She was a perfect complement to Art in so many ways and I was very saddened by her passing as well. May Art's and Mary Katherine's memories always be for a blessing to their families, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing them.
