Simon Cooper Obituary

Simon was born in 1945 in Surrey, England the son of John and Rosemary Cooper, and early-on felt the calling of places far and away. He started his professional career by finding passage to the Caribbean and within a few short years secured his first 'helm' as the captain of the Lord Jim. While his career would grow to extraordinary heights, there is no more fitting an image than him grinning at the wheel, expertly hosting an intimate group of guests, all feeling that he will confidently deliver them to their next adventure and sharing many laughs along the way.
Simon was known by all for his graciousness, warmth and his bright smile. His gift was to make another person the singular center of his attention and truly listen with interest and then to forever remember the small details he learned. In his storied career he crossed paths with hundreds of people daily and was known far and wide for that iconic empathetic interaction.
He found his calling in hospitality. His achievements, proudest moments and closest friends are intertwined with the story of his professional life and therefore his memory would be incomplete without recognizing his impressive work. His distinguished career as a hotelier spanned more than 50 years, three continents and five hotel brands. He was able to effortlessly and joyfully settle into myriad different cultures having lived in Canada, Israel, United States, Hong Kong and France and most recently grew to love working and developing projects in Costa Rica.
For 10 years Simon was president and COO of the Ritz Carlton brand globally and subsequently was named the first President of Asia Pacific when Marriott moved to a continental structure. Under his tenure, the region grew to 195 properties in 15 countries and territories. Earlier Simon had been President of Delta Hotels in Canada and was instrumental in helping to develop and promote Canadian tourism. He retired from corporate life in 2016 and settled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. There he was able to enjoy retirement to the fullest with his many friends close-by.
No story of Simon would be complete without mentioning his many passions including his love of sailing, delight in playing and following rugby, avid cycling, lifelong enjoyment of golf and his diverse interest in history and global cultures.
Simon died on April 24, 2024 of complications from Leukemia after a two year struggle. Simon will be dearly missed by his wife of 50 years Marcelle; his siblings Chris and Lyn; his children Winkie, Susannah and Jason; as well as his four grandsons, Cole, Zachary, Benjamin and Evan.
Service is scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Simon's memory to the Hematologic Malignancies Translational Center of Excellence at Penn Medicine, 3535 Market St., Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104 or at www.penncancer.org

Dear Cooper Family,

Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Being Mr. Cooper´s assistant with Delta Hotels was a truly wonderful experience and a learning adventure that I have leaned into through out my career.

He was a leader that inspired many and I am so proud to have had the opportunity to work with him.

May his memory be a blessing.

Sincerely, Meredith Ash Macfarlane

Simon, You have been absent from the Toronto Welsh group of friends for too many years but that does not diminish the impact you provided in every game through your determination, your fitness and your general presence in both the 15's game and the 7's game. You were always a gentleman, proudly English but equally proud to wear the red of the Toronto Welsh. I loved being on the field with you and loved being able to taunt you that I was 2 years older than you, but we proudly flew the flag for the Seniors'. Rosemary and I send condolence's and wishes of comfort to Marcelle and your family and loved ones. Thank you for the memories Simon. Rest in Peace.
David George.

Simon, I played rugby with you. You would come by our home fields whenever you were in Toronto, with your boots and your shorts.
With taping over your ears and around your knees you looked every bit the rugby player.
We missed you when you left Toronto and I will miss you more now.
I hope you took your boots, because wherever you are going, they may have a game you can join.
With friendship... Phil Arnold, Toronto Welsh Rugby Club.

Terry and I are deeply saddened to learn of Simon´s passing. We remember fun times together when you lived in Oakville and we remember how much fun we had when you joined us on our bike trip to Italy 25 years ago. We go back a long way - to the days when Simon supported the Stationary Bike Ride for JDRF through the Delta Hotels. Simon was a legend - a warm, caring, open, jovial, friendly man, who made everyone feel special and important. Marcelle, may memories of many wonderful times together stay with you forever and help you through your darkest days. Bonnie & Terry Jackson

Memories exploding in my head make my heart heavy but at the same time incredibly grateful that we got to share SO many joyous times with this amazing man.
Simon, the leader of our cycling group in the Luberon-always encouraging the slowest cyclist; Simon, the drink-waiter at our dinner parties-always making sure our glasses were tooo full; Simon, the helper at dinner parties-he was always happy to be the plate-stacker; Simon, the sailor-lending a hand always to carry the heaviest picnic basket...and with beautiful Marcelle at his side, just THE best "besties" we could ever have. Simon, your smile and laughter fill the air as I type this...you and the joy you gave to each and every one of us will not be forgotten. To the kindest man I have ever met, I say thank you for you. To divine Marcelle and family, our love, prayers and thoughts are with you every step of the way. We love you.

Simon cooper. Mr. Cooper as he was affectionately know. A kind hearted gentleman. Jovial friendly and down to earth. I was an employee under his leadership at Delta Hotels and Resorts. Mr. Cooper would walk into the office as I cover at the reception. Not only did he know me by name but would also address me by my nickname Rosie. At the office parties he would go around and talk to the employees and was interested in they stories and lives. He truly cared about us. Mr. Cooper will be greatly remembered as a really great human being. May he rest in eternal peace.

We farewell Simon F. Cooper, a deserving legend, a true and kind gentleman, an unbelievable talented athlete and above all a mentor for many young Israeli hoteliers and future leaders. A confident leader, wise and above all human relations sensitive expert. Once in 1977 the late legendary Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan told me at CP Jerusalem Plaza hosting a lunch for Israel-Egypt Peace Accord "we need leaders like this young man, it is a pleasure to meet him". Ronit and me are hugging you Marcelle and family and paying tribute to special unique , one of a kind Simon Cooper

RIP , , , 70 80 .

Farewell to Simon Cooper RIP, an Israeli hotel industry legend, mentor, leader and trendsetter who during his years in Israel in the late 70's and early 80's left behind his mark and a generation of hoteliers of a different kind who are leading the hotel industry in Israel his way.

To the Cooper Family,
I was privileged to experience Simon´s wisdom and kindness up close, not just as my boss and mentor but I saw him in action as a devoted husband, family man and friend.

He was able to blend seriousness with fun, and work with personal warmth. He just had that unique ability to make everyone around him feel completely at home.

And Marcelle, Simon was better for having you, an equally fabulous, kind and generous person. I love you and wish you the grace and strength to keep going.

I am forever grateful for the social moments and memories shared together. Simon´s legacy is alive and his kindness, laughter and monumental achievements will be celebrated for a very long time to come.

With deepest respect and affection,
Angella
