Thomas Doherty Obituary

Thomas P. Doherty, 78, of Rockport and formerly of Bedford, husband of Eleanor (Kirchner) Doherty, passed away on Sept. 22, 2010 at Salem Hospital in Salem. Born in Somerville, Mass. on Nov. 23, 1931, Tom was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Hennigan) Doherty of Somerville. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School in 1949 and from Boston College with the Class of 1953. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. When he returned from Korea, he and Eleanor married in 1957. They lived in Arlington before settling down in Bedford, Mass. where they lived and raised their family before moving to Rockport in 1992. Tom was employed as the Director of Fiscal Services at Salem Hospital for 23 years. Tom is survived by his wife Eleanor and six children, Sharon Doherty of Acton, Gayle Doherty Beals of Salem, Christopher Doherty of Somerville, Tina Ford of Chelmsford, Michael Scott of Davidson, S.C., and Robert Scott of Needham, 10 grandchildren, his brothers Charles Doherty of Westwood and James Doherty of Milton, and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Helen McCartney and Elizabeth Scott. His funeral was held from the Burgess & Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main St., Rockport on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass on Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Joachims Church, 9 Broadway, Rockport burial followed in Beech Grove Cemetery, Rockport. Visiting hours were held on Friday, September 24 from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Family and friends were cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent in his memory to the New England Hemophilia Association, 347 Washington Street, Suite 402, Dedham, MA 02026.
