Stephen Morse Obituary

Stephen R. Morse died Sunday, November 7, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old and succumbed after a long struggle with cancer. A well-known domestic relations attorney in the Boston area, he practiced for nearly fifty years and served multiple terms as a representative to the Brookline Town Meeting from Precinct 1. Always socially conscious, principled, and public spirited, he was active in Boston-area politics for nearly five decades, with special emphasis on issues of racial and gender equity, fair housing, and educational access. He served at various times the Commission on Law and Social Action of the American Jewish Congress, the Brookline Democratic Town Committee, Temple Israels Social Action Committee, the Westwood, (Massachusetts) Committee on Human Rights, the Friends of Halls Pond, the Brookline Arts Center Advisory Committee, and many local political campaigns. A graduate of Newton High School, Bowdoin College, and Columbia University Law School, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve Field Artillery as a Lieutenant. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Deanne (Williams) of Brookline; his son Peter J. Morse and his wife Cristina and their children Owen and Charlotte, of Annapolis, Maryland; his daughter Kathryn T. Morse of Weybridge, Vermont; his sister Janet Morse Fox of Brookline; and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Stephanie E. Morse of Brookline. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, November 26 at 3:00 pm at Temple Israel, 477 Longwood Avenue, Boston. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Steps To Success of Brookline, 19 Kennard Road, Brookline, MA 02445, a comprehensive school for success and a college readiness program serving low income youth in the Brookline Public Schools.

As one of Steve's law partners for ten years I can say that he was as generous and open hearted as anyone I have ever known. That big, broad smile, so willingly bestowed, is unforgettable. Whether it was a client's problems, firm business, small talk, or our social occasions, affection was a natural by-product. When Steve, Gordon, and I started, Steve was the only one with any clients, and that was our start! He was that generous. The world is smaller now. I am so sorry, Deanne, Peter, and Kathryn. Kathy joins me. David Wylie

" I feel the loss of Steve deeply. Steve was mostly on the sidelines of my life except when I deeply needed him. Then he was a full and loving presence. He was that kind of person; he gave with generosity, then he disappeared until needed again. He lived with uncomplicated generosity.
Thank you, Steve. Matthew Budd.m.d. (Cambridge, Mass.)

I too am sorry for your loss. I shared an office with Steve and remember him as a very friendly person who made us all very happy to be with him. My best to all of you.

I am saddened to learn of the loss of Steve. We shared an office suite for many years and Steve always made a point to drop by and say hi. It seems like only a short time ago he stopped in to check his mail on one of my computers and tell me about his travels. I will always remember Steve has a true gentle man.

Deanne, So very sorry about Steve. I will always remember him on the swim team racing in the Bowdoin College pool, huge shoulders and a massive swimmer's body. Always kind and with a good word for everyone. Ready to lend a helping hand and interested in others. We may not have agreed but he always followed my political columns when he so ably served the town and I wrote for the Tab. Our friendship with the Waymans and house on the Vineyard extended our family connection. I am so very sorry to have lost such a very good man. He was part of the very fabric of our town and he will be missed. Myrrna and I extend our deepest condolences.
