Jesus Wilson Obituary

WILSON, JESUS NOLASCO Jesus "Jess" Wilson passed away on May 18, 2005 at Alvarado Hospital. He was born on January 9, 1925 to Juan Wilson and Rosario Nolasco in Manila, Philippine Islands. Jess grew up in Manila as one of three boys and three girls. On May 30, 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the NSS San Clemente, USS Hancock and USS Valley Forge. During his naval service, Jess received the WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal, China Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1949, was called back in 1951 to serve in the Korean War, and was again honorably discharged in 1952, although he stayed on in the reserves through March 1954. Jess went to Cal-Aero Technical Institute from September 1949 and graduated with an Engineering degree on July 13, 1951. When Jess joined the Navy, he was stationed in San Diego, California. In August of 1946, he met a beautiful girl, Mercedes Ceasar, at a Chamber of Commerce Mestiza Club dance. On July 14, 1951, the day after Jess graduated from college, he married Mercy at Christ the King Church. The newlyweds honeymooned along the California coast, visiting all the California missions. Jess also loved to travel with his family, visiting Europe, the Philippines, the Caribbean, Costa Rica and Panama. Jess worked at General Dynamics, Convair Division, beginning in 1952 for 15 years. He left Convair to pursue contract work, working on many different airplane platforms. Jess "job shopped" for seven years before joining the U.S. Navy civilian ranks. At the Naval Aviation Depot Corporation (NADC), Jess was the established expert in the field of Structures Engineering and became the first to hold a Senior Aerospace Engineer Specialist position. He designed repairs for a downed Japanese aircraft, designed specialized parts used for repairs in Great Britain, and taught repairs to the Egyptian air force. He designed the camera hold for the movie "Top Gun" and analyzed and designed repairs for downed aircraft in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Jess was devoted to educating and inspiring junior engineers. He authored the Flight Vehicle Structural Manual which was used as technical reference at the Depot. He also authored and delivered the Flight Vehicle Structural Repair Engineering Analysis and Design class, where he shared his 43 years of experience and knowledge working in the aerospace industry. Jess retired from the Navy on January 3, 1998 as a Senior Structural Engineer, a dedicated man who loved his work. Jess is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mercedes Wilson, daughter Natalie Anderson, sons Jess and Robert, brothers John Wilson and Tony Wilson of the Philippine Islands, and sister Esperanza Barriero of Las Vegas. Rosary and Viewing will be held at Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary, Bonita, CA on May 22, 2005 at 7 p.m. Mass will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 621 Sicard, San Diego, CA, on May 23, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. The interment will be held at Glen Abbey Cemetery on May 23, 2005. Jess will long be remembered as a true professional. My involvement with Jess was minimal, however his expertise and professional demeanor made a lasting impression on me. Please accept my prayers for Jess and his family.

As is stated in other entries, Jess had a profound impact on the NAVAIR organization. I too was mentored by this great man and recall fondly the time I was able to present him with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) San Diego Section Award for Outstanding Contribution to Aerospace Engineering just prior to his retirement. Below is the introduction I used at the awards banquet where Jess was honored:

1997 AIAA SAN DIEGO SECTION OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

Mr. Jesus “Jess” Wilson

Naval Aviation Depot North Island

It is a great honor I introduce the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Aerospace Engineering Award, Mr. Jess Wilson. His career working at General Dynamics Convair Division where he spent 15 years working on F102 Dart, F106 Dagger, 240, 340 and 540 Airliners, the Atlas Missile, the Centaur and the Sea Dart programs. Leaving Convair to pursue contract work, he gained further experience working on platforms such as the F14, DC9, DC10, 707, 727,737, 747, C-51, C141, F100, B-1, A286, and the A300. After 7 years of contracting, Jess joined the civilian ranks with the United States Navy and worked on the A-4, F-14, F-18, F-16, F-5, T-38, E-2, C-2, and every Helo.

Mr. Jesus Wilson is the Naval Aviation Depot Corporation established expert in the field of Structures Engineering. Jesus was the recipient of the first Senior Aerospace Engineer Specialist position, GS-13. That position until then, was unprecedented at the field level in the Naval Federal Employee arena. This recognition is acknowledged by other Naval Aviation Depots like ourselves in their request for his assistance in support of their complex structural problems.

In addition to his far-reaching technical accomplishments, Jess’ contribution to the aerospace engineering community has been demonstrated in his dedication to educating and inspiring junior engineers. Examples of such efforts include a Flight Vehicle Structural Manual which he authored and is currently being used as technical reference at the Depot. Jesus also authors and delivers a Flight Vehicle Structural Repair Engineering Analysis and Design Class where he shares his 43 years of experience and knowledge working in the aerospace industry.

I can attest as a fellow NADEP employee, as can many in this room here tonight, that Jess has served as a valuable source of knowledge for the engineering workforce at North Island. Jess influence has been wide spread throughout the Depot and beyond. It is without hesitation, we say that Jess has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to aerospace engineering as an instructor, mentor and role model.

My Dear Merci,

Though it has been many years since I have seen you and Jess, you folks have never been far from my mind, and he will be sorely missed. Jess was true to his word to me, and made me proud of his performance for the Navy - in my book, he was a fine, fine man. My most sincere condolences to you and your family. I cannot express the grief which I too feel at his passing. Forgive me for not attending the services, but I am there in spirit to support you always.

I was one of many young engineers that Jess mentored at North Island NAS. He treated all those he taught with respect and dignity, and he was always happy to help and open to any question. His legacy lives on today as his writings and teachings are passed-on to younger generations. He was a great man and will be missed.

Dear family, I am very saddened to read that Jess has died. He and I worked together and were very good friends at CONVAIR in the 50s and 60s. He was an excellent engineer and a fine person then, and I'm sure for his whole life.

Dear Mercy & Family,

I was sorry to read of Jess' passing in this mornings paper.

His consistant smiling face and personality brought back fond memories of our GD Engineering days in the early '60. He was truly a good person. I'm sorry we were not able to get together in a long time.

If you hear from any of the old gang (Carlos Y., the Ben's, Charlie N., Francis H., etc.) I hope they will email me.

Peace be with you.
