Bill Kimmey had a profound impact on my teenage life. He was a mentor to our Boy Scout and Explorers with his efforts in supporting the Order of the Arrow. The tribe we depicted in powwows and dance competitions was Old time Western Sioux. Our regalia was as authentic as kids from the San Fernando Valley could get it.

I feel unfortunate in many ways to not have met Mr. Kimmey. Living in the area, I passed by the store for years, never letting it catch my eye or I'd have stopped in long before. Rest in Peace Standing Bear

It is with some sadness I hear of Mr. Kimmeys passing. It was a few years back, but being on my birthday, a date I will always remember.
It is will great fondness that I think or Standing Bear. He was a teacher,a mentor and a great example of who and what I should strive to be like as a adult. We met in Scouting with the OA. It was Mr. Kimmey that solidified my love of the Indian lore, craft, and all peoples. He taught me so much, and I have always admired him.
I remember the craft room in the back, in the barn, with the old out of date magazines in a big book. Looking through and learning how to do these things correctly. How to make it so that is was respectful, not "Hollywood". I remember completing a piece of bead work, or my otter breastplate, or club gun stock club... or whatever project I worked on, and not wanting to wait to show him what I had done...to get that smile that it was done right.
I moved away from Los Angeles over 20 years ago, and he is still my guide. I still often think of Mr. Kimmey, especially whenever I get out my regalia or my beading box, but even just in putting on my Scout uniform to go to the local O/A meeting, where I hope I can be as good a Scouter as he was for me. He passed on a legacy to many Scouts like myself. And although Mr. Kimmey has passed, his legacy continues to grow. A small piece in Portland Oregon, and I am sure in hundreds and thousands of other places in this world. In the thousands of hearts he touched he planted seeds of love, and by his inspiration in all of us, his legacy continues to grow. It is by instilling in the young folks I meet, the lessons he taught me that I do him honor.
Bill, thank you. I was blessed to have known you.
Yours in Brotherhood.

Bill's life was an amazing gift to us all. He was so patient and generous. I had the pleasure of knowing him for some years while I was active in the Boy Scouts. He inspired all of us with his inner peace and leadership skills. I can still picture his face at the campfire. One time, I invited Bill to visit my "Music of the Peoples" class at CSUN. The class was held in a large auditorium. Bill arrived, dressed in full Native American regalia. He explained why music was so important to the Native American culture and performed several ritual dances like the "Eagle Dance". I wish I had photos to share. Bill gave to those who met him and never expected anything in return. He was truly an inspirational role model and leader. Thank you Bill. We all miss you.

Although I had wondered many times, I am only now hearing about your crossing. I was telling one of our students about the store and looked up the website to share with him. Although it's been a while now, I do want to thank you for all that you have done during your time here with us - for sharing Native heritage with hundreds of 3rd graders and other children in our area, for always having a joke and a smile, for welcoming all into the store or pow wows or wherever you were, and for sharing your Elder wisdom with all who needed to be uplifted - whether or not we knew we needed it at the time! Until we meet again, aloha pumehana

Once again here I sit and write the day after the anniversary of Standing Bear's Passing.
I know each day he watches over us at Standing Bear's Trading Post looking out for us in all that we do.
He is truly missed by many!
It has been 3 years since his passing yet it seems like it was only yesterday he sat in his chair, waking from his nap following lunch and jokingly would say... did we eat yet?

I have just learned of this Great warrior's passing. It is very hard to lose a loved one.I wish I could have known him,as I too have been searching for my Native American ancestory, and perhaps he might have been able to help me.My heart and my prayers go out to all of those he left behind. May they always know that his gentle spirit watches over them and protects them from all harm. May he continue to soar with the eagles, walk with the great White Buffalo and the Wolves, and may he always find peace in that Happy Hunting ground.May the Great Spirit always be with you now and always.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the lost of such a fine, honorable, and upstanding Native American Man. I am sure it will be a long time before the memory of him will be forgotten. All his teachings and continuous sharing of his knowledge of the Native American Culture / Heritage will continue for many years. I am sorry I never got to meet the man, but I am sure his spirit will be forever with the council fires. May his spirit continue to influence the youth and young adults of today's seekers of the Native American Cultures / Heritage. His family will remain in my thoughts and prayers!

I knew Bear. I am thankful for that. He saw things a bit different than most. This intimidated some. Some loved him for it. I just learned od his passing today. i read what some said. Some I liked some just don't get it. A Man named Church said it best for Bear. I could talk with Bear. We would go for a long time without talking. When we did it was like yesterday. I'll miss those yesterdays. I take comfort that Bear got to the other side before I got there. If you know him you'll now why. I will miss his HUGS! Be happy for him. Not sad. He is home and he is happy.

So Sorry for your loss. I didn't know him personally but I am a fellow Native American and my daughter, who also passed away 8/9/05 from Medford Massachusetts, is Native American as well she was 14 yrs old.
