MOUNT GILEAD - Edward Lloyd "Ed" Kimmey, age 82, of Mount Gilead, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Ed was born on October 26, 1942, in Galion, Ohio, a son of the late Hugh T. and M. Margery (Shields) Kimmey. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1960. Ed went on to earn both his B.S. and M.S. degrees from The Ohio State University and later obtained an additional M.S. from Virginia State University.
Ed and Rita met in the summer serving as camp counselors during their college days. The two began dating and on April 16, 1965 they were married. Ed and Rita shared 54 wonderful years as husband and wife before she preceded him in death on June 1, 2019.
Ed dedicated his life to education and inspiring his students. For many years, he taught Biology and Algebra at the Mount Gilead Junior High, retiring in 1995. Following retirement, he taught Chemistry part time at Highland High School and Biochemistry and Anatomy at Marion Technical College.
A man of deep faith, Ed was an active member of Bryn Zion Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon. He was the organist for 40 years for the Denmark and Boundary United Methodist Churches and also went on many missionary trips to places such as Thailand, Mexico and Alaska.
Ed had a servant's heart and was deeply involved in his community. His many roles included: serving on the Mount Gilead School Board, EMT with the Morrow County Volunteer Squad, Morrow County Seed Inspector, member of the Morrow County Park District Board, President of the Ohio Science Fair Board, cofounder of the Morrow County Gideon Camp (with Tim Sharrock), the Morrow County Prison Ministry and longtime manager of Bryn Zion Cemetery.
An avid outdoorsman, Ed loved being in nature. He was a life member of the Ohio Trappers Association and enjoyed trapping, target shooting, canoeing, biking on trails, bird watching, and making maple syrup. He was also a loyal Ohio State fan and liked taking care of his coin and stamp collections.
Left to cherish Ed's memory is his daughter, Jennifer Kimmey Shearer; son, Michael Kimmey; grandsons, Charles & Sam Shearer; sister, Donna Kimmey Gardner; cousins: Mary Jordan Siegfried, Susie Jordan Stancliff, Thomas Shields; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: George Kimmey, James Kimmey; and a sister, Margaret Kimmey Reyes.

Ed was a also a bit of a craftsman as he build an Optimist Class sailing dingy in 1967 and later sold to me for all of $25.00. I have been a small boat sailor ever since thanks to Ed's influence.
