In 1972, my dad took me to work on Park Avenue, and when we went to a local diner for lunch, and I turned and seen Bill enter and began walking towards me to grab a booth and i was so excited, but at the same time, 11 years old and got my wires crossed and yelled out to my dad, 'look dad,,, it's Roger Grimsby'! I never forgot the look on Bill's face,,, pure Ron Burgandy-esque! I just found out he had passed as I was looking to find him and see if he remembered the incident,,,, I bet he would have!! Sorry to hear of his passing,,, a very classy guy!

I couldn't agree more with Lenny Shiffrin. Bill Beutel and Roger Grimsby were part of my childhood as well. I grew up watching them report the NYC news almost every night while I was growing up in Upstate New York. Mr. Shiffrin couldn't be more right in that we know we are growing older when those we looked up to as kids, and were part of our childhood, leave us.

March 15, 2009
I've been out of the area for a while and as I was looking up info about Eyewitness News I saw that Bill Beutel had passed away. Growing up in New Jersey I watched Channel 7 with my Gramma (because I had to) and then for school (because I had to) and then for the news, because I wanted to. I grew up watching Bill Beutel when Eyewitness News was on for an hour! He was a very nice and intelligent anchorman and told extremely corny jokes, but that was cool.
Thank you to his family for letting us have him for so long :-)

I was first introduced to Mr. Beutel as a young college intern while at 'Eyewitness News' in 1989. The second time I met him was in the newsroom about a week later. It was around noon, and Bill was just arriving to start his evening schedule; Burberry suit, London Fog resting on his suit case arm and a wide smile which acknowledged all who greeted him. Just before passing my desk, he took five seconds, reached his free hand out to me and said, "it's Brian, right?"
That is the kind of man Bill Beutel was; keen enough to remember the name of an intern and gratious enough to treat him like a contemporary...a true Gentleman.

A part of the history of New York and those of us who experienced it. Even terrible news was given with comfort and an air of assurance the told us things would be alright. Along with Roger Grimsby, two of the most famous farewells: "Good night and be well" and "thank you for your time this time until next time." Perhaps they're together again in the newsroom above.

Bill Beutel will be greatly. I presently reside in the Atlanta area, but I grew up in The Bronx in the 70's, 80's and 90's watching Bill and Roger Grimsby. We did not have a TV in our house until I was in second grade. One of my early memories when we first purchased one and turned it on was Bill Beutel doing the news with Roger Grimsby. My routine was simple: Watch the 4:30 movie if it was interesting, and then wait for the music which signified that Eyewitness news with Bill Beutel and Roger Grimsby was coming on. They were a regular part of my childhood. Mr. Beutel, thanks for the memories!

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Beutel at the Innagural Ball for President Clinton and Vice President Gore in January of 1997. I literally bumped into him. Being a man who uses a wheelchair, I was rolling along, making my way to the stage area. As I went over a bump, a man turned in front of my chair. I could not stop. I crashed, full speed into his shins....That man turned out to be Bill Beutel. As I realized whom I bumped into and apologized profusely, he laughed and told me not to worry, he was the one at fault. We then had a nice 2 minute conversation and went our seperate ways. It was obvious that his on air personality was his true personality. For many of us who grew up in New York during the 70's he was the constant...the face we knew, trusted and depended upon...To Bill, who is now with Roger, I say..."Hoping your news is good news"....and...."Good luck and Be well"... Until we see you again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand....

Being raised in Central New Jersey,
WABC news was the one to watch. I grew up with Bill Beutel and Roger Grimsby. They had the best team of reporters during the mid to late 60's. They kept the city on its toes. After leaving the area in the early 80's it was an adjustment to watch a news broadcast with out him in the anchor chair. He was and will be missed.

I had the good fortune of meeting Bill when I worked for ABC in 1962. I remember him so well for his charm, graciousness and very low-key approach to the news. Even when I left and visited over the next few years, whenever I ran into him it was as tho' only a day had passed. His sincerity, his style and his reporting abilities could not but help to make him, and keep him, number 1. Thanks, Bill, for all you've been to so many.

As a child/teenager growing up in Pearl River, I remember Bill reporting the news quite fondly. I remember how handsome he was, and how soothing his voice was, no matter what the news was. For many years, whenever I would visit the New York metropolitan area I would always be sure to watch the evening news on WABC to see Bill Beutel. Just watching him anchoring a newscast made me feel at home in the big city.
Bill was a great asset to the city of New York, a true credit to TV journalism and a fine gentleman. May his memory always inspire other TV news anchors to keep their viewing audience well informed about events in the world, and to do so with the class and itegrity that were so characteristic of this distinguished newsman.
New Yorkers had the good luck for so long to have Bill Beutel as their own and New Yorkers now need to be well without him.
