Win Rockefeller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2006.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller, the unassuming billionaire who last year abandoned a race for Arkansas governor, a post once held by his father - died Sunday after unsuccessful treatments for a blood disorder, his office said. He was 57.

Rockefeller died Sunday morning at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with his family present, said Steve Brawner, the lieutenant governor's spokesman.

Bone marrow transplants Oct. 7 and March 29 at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center failed to cure an unclassified myeloproliferative disorder. He returned to Arkansas on July 8 and immediately entered the hospital. The next day, Rockefeller notified Gov. Mike Huckabee that he could not continue his duties, at least temporarily.

Huckabee cut short a trip to New Orleans for the Southern Governors Association meeting and was returning to Little Rock, spokeswoman Alice Stewart said.

The great-grandson of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller ranked No. 283 on the Forbes magazine list of the nation's wealthiest people in 2005, with a fortune the magazine estimated at $1.2 billion. As lieutenant governor, a part-time job, he donated his $34,673 state salary to charity.

Huckabee and Rockefeller had an amiable relationship. The governor in 2004 appeared to brand Rockefeller as his heir apparent when he said voters should vote a GOP ticket in 2006.

''I think people will say, 'It was a Republican governor who opened health care and the different highway programs; it was a Republican governor who pushed for increased standards in our schools,''' Huckabee said then.

But that was before former Homeland Security Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson entered the governor's race. With two Republicans on the ballot, Huckabee was careful not to lean either way.

Rockefeller was the son of former Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, who was elected to two-year terms in 1966 and 1968. The father died in 1973 at age 60 of cancer.

The lieutenant governor, a Republican, entered politics in 1996. He won a special election to complete the unexpired term of Huckabee, who became governor July 15, 1996, after Jim Guy Tucker was convicted in a fraud case as part of the Whitewater investigation.

Rockefeller won re-election twice, winning 67 percent of the vote in 1998 and 60 percent in 2002. As lieutenant governor, Rockefeller presided over the state Senate and served as governor when Huckabee was out of the state.

Under the state's term-limits law, he could not serve again as lieutenant governor. He announced his candidacy for governor last year but withdrew July 19, 2005, after the blood disorder was diagnosed.

Before withdrawing, he had said he wouldn't rely on his fortune to purchase the office.

''I don't think the governor's office is there to be bought by anybody. Nobody is ordained or destined to be governor. A person has to earn the right to serve,'' he said in February 2005.

As lieutenant governor, he served as an economic cheerleader for the state, traveling at his own expense to seek foreign investments here.

After his father's death, Rockefeller bought Winrock Farms Inc., founded by his father in 1953, and became involved in banking, retailing, automobile dealerships and resorts.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. and a former Arkansas first lady, noted Rockefeller's ''extraordinary public service'' during and prior to his terms as lieutenant governor.

''He was a friend of mine, and he will be missed,'' said Clinton, visiting Arkansas over the weekend to raise money for Arkansas' Federation of Democratic Women, to visit her husband's presidential library and to visit friends.

He was a member of the Arkansas State Police Commission from 1981 to 1995 and was chairman of the President's Council on Rural America after his appointment to the council in 1991 by the first President Bush.

Rockefeller supported literacy councils and in 1997 created the Books in the Attic program, in which Boy Scouts collect used books to distribute to families. With two children with Down syndrome, Rockefeller and his second wife, Lisenne, started what is now the Academy at Riverdale, a school for children with learning disabilities.

Rockefeller also founded The Billfish Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting marlins, swordfish and other billfish. As a National Rifle Association member, he sponsored Project ChildSafe to distribute free trigger locks in the state.

He also served on the Boy Scouts' national board of directors and was president of the Scouts' local Quapaw Area Council. He was on the national boards of Ducks Unlimited and The Nature Conservancy, and on the boards of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center and the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation.

Born Sept. 17, 1948, in New York, Rockefeller was the only child of Winthrop Rockefeller and Barbara ''Bobo'' Sears, the daughter of an immigrant Lithuanian coal miner. An uncle was former vice president Nelson Rockefeller, and current U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is a cousin.

Rockefeller attended Pembroke College at the University of Oxford and graduated from the ranch management program at Texas Christian University. Rockefeller had homes at Winrock Farms in Conway County and in Little Rock. He had eight children.

OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH WIN'S FAMILY. I MET WIN AT A MARLIN TOURNEY IN BIMINI. WE PLAYED A GAG ON THE COMMITTEE WHEN WIN CAUGHT ME AS THE LARGEST DOLPHIN. I WAS A MEMBER OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS AT THE TIME AND WE HAD SOME FUN WITH IT. I HAVE SOME GREAT PICTURES OF HE AND I AND THE TROPHY HE WAS GIVEN FOR CATCHING "THE LARGEST DOLPHIN" IF ANY OF THE FAMILY WOULD LIKE THEM.
I AM SO SORRY TO JUST BE HEARING OF THIS.
BLESSINGS TO HIS FAMILY,
BOB BAUMHOWER

My dearest sympathy to the Rockefellers. I met Win in St. Thomas in 1989. I fished with Win a day before the Boyscout tournement on the Alchemist. I will never forget how I was treated, like family. I cought my first Blue Marlin with Win. I'll allways remember Win.

Time has passed, I still miss Lt. Gov. Rockefeller. I had such high hopes that he would follow his dad and become the Governor of Arkansas. I know that he would have done an excellant job. That was just his nature. He had the magnificent gift that allowed him to talk to anyone with the same caring and sensativity and compassion. My thoughts and prayers continue for Lisence and the kids. We all loss a great friend that day!

Am just hearing of Win's passing -- met him many years ago in New Orleans -- a group of us shared September birthdays, of which Win was one -- he was a very unassuming, gentle man and I remember him fondly. Blessings to his family.

I just recently learned and I am deeply sorry about his passing. I have the fondest of memories of Win. I first met him in St. Thomas U.S.V.I. during the Boy Scout Tournament in 1978 and for many years thereafter. Fare well my brother until we meet again.

I had the pleasure of working as a volunteer on Win's campaign for Governor. He is sorely missed. I never had the pleasure of meeting his family directly, however, I know them all to be as honorable as Win.

I had distinct privilege to meet and work with Lt. Gov. Rockefeller while working in Arkansas. He was such a kind and generous Southern gentleman. I was nobody special when I met him in Magnolia but when I saw him again at The Capital months later, he called me by name and greeted me with that winning smile, a handshake and warm hug. He was taken too soon from all of us because of the great service he has provided to Arkansas and his country. My prayers are with his family and friends.

Take care and peace be with you,

I had the pleasure of knowing Win as a child and growing up with him as Bobo and my parents met in the Bahamas and became friends as Win and I did.

We then both were at school in Switzerland. Sadly I recently tried to find Win as one of my sons is going to America and found out he had passed away.

My heart goes out to his family and I would just like to add that everything I have read shows me he never changed from his looks to what he felt strongly about.

Mr. Rockefeller will always have a special place in my heart, and he will be greatly missed. I too lost my best friend to the same disease Win had: Myloid Fibrosis turned into Leukemia. What was odd was that my best friend was only 26 far too young to get this form of blood disorder. She died three short months later. I will miss them both, but they are now beautiful angels.

I had the pleasure of introducing my son and daughter-in-law to Win Rockefeller. He was the most gracious gentleman I have ever known. He spent about 45 minutes of his precious time, talking with us. Since then, I have always been the first to stand and cheer whenever he arrived to speak at a public event. I wanted to vote for him for Governor. I have many photographs of him patiently standing with my family in his office at the state capitol. What a fine man. What a great honor to have known him.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your loved one. My mother passed away exactly 3 years ago from cancer at the age of 43 and I was devastated because I lost my best friend, but I put my faith in God and came to the realization that there are things that we don't want to happen but have to accept and people we can't live without but have to let go because God has a plan for everyone. Mr. Rockerfeller will always be as close as a memory and the God of all comfort is always as close as a prayer. It will be the little things that you will remember - like the quiet moments, the smiles, and the laughter. Although it may seem hard right now it will be the memory of those little things that help to push away the pain and bring back the smiles because those we love are never lost to us and we feel them in so many special ways. I will continue to pray that God gives you and your family the strength to get through this troubling time and remember that death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, but love leaves a memory that no one can steal.

I had heard wonderful things about Win Rockefeller. He will be remembered for his kind character and compassion. He was one who was born into wealth, but was one who channeled some of it into meaningful and thoughtful ways to benefit people who needed help. Thank you, Win for your many contributions. Those who knew you personally or knew of you appreciated you. Arkansas and the United States will miss you.Grace to the members of the family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

This is a black day for Arkansas. We have lost one of it's finest assets and statesman. Across party lines, he was the absolute epitome of what we all hope/pray/wish we were electing to public office. He will be genuinely missed for many years. I don't know the words to convey my sorrow for his family, but you are all in my prayers. May our Heavenly Father comfort and bless you all.

We bought a book on the Rockefeller family for our youngest daughter one Christmas several years ago. We thought it would be great to have Win sign it for her, and when asked, he said "sure!" Though he didn't know her, he signed it as if he did - to say she was happy once she read his inscription would be an understatement. May he know the same joy in heaven today, as our daughter did that Christmas morning. Our sincerest sympathy to his family. He will be missed by many.

My wife and I had the good fortune of meeting and talking with Mr. Rockefeller at church in February, 2005. He was just as warm and kind as a human being could have been. You could tell that he was a genuine man and he embodied the spirit of what we all should strive for. I know that he will be dearly missed by all people who knew of him. In short, he was a man's man and a true American hero. Sincerely, Gene & Gina Bell.

I graduated with Win at Herringswell Manor HS in England. He was a kind & caring person then & after reading about him today it shows he never lost those traits of a kind & caring person. At our graduation his Mother provided Champagne & caviar for us, which we were appreciative & made us feel special. My bother & Win were in a band together & sometimes Win's Mom would hire a Limo for them to show up in which made them feel like real Rock Stars. He must have taken after his Mother's caring nature.
