Bryan Pata Obituary
The circumstances around Pata's death were not immediately clear, and Miami-Dade police refused to release specific information about what happened. A formal announcement was expected from the university later Tuesday. "Right now, we're just gathering ourselves and just trying to pull ourselves together," Miami athletic director Paul Dee said.
Pata, a graduate of Miami Central, was in his fourth year with the Hurricanes. He appeared in 41 games, making 23 starts, and was expected to be selected in next spring's NFL draft.
It was at least the fourth time that tragedy involving a player has struck the Hurricanes in recent years.
In April 1996, reserve linebacker and Miami native Marlin Barnes was murdered in a campus apartment. And in 2003, former Miami safety Al Blades was killed in a car accident, about a year after former Miami linebacker Chris Campbell — who had just completed his eligibility with the Hurricanes — also died in a crash.
Pata's death was the second incident involving guns this season for the Hurricanes.
In July, reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard before an early morning workout. Cooper was not seriously injured. Brandon Meriweather, one of Cooper's teammates and roommates, returned fire at Cooper's assailant, taking three shots that apparently missed, police said.
Several Miami players, including Pata, said that incident was a robbery attempt, and cautioned other teammates to always be aware of their surroundings.
"We're targets because we play for the University of Miami. ... These guys, they know who we are," Miami linebacker Jon Beason said shortly after the Cooper shooting.
That incident prompted Miami coach Larry Coker to say that he did not want his players to have guns, even if they were possessing them legally.

Bryan pata was one of the most skilled athletes i watched play in Highschool and in College football one of the reasons i play my heart out every snap, and was also a motivation to me on the field thats why ever play on that football field i think about big #95

I grew up in miami my whole life. I moved away 11 years ago and joined the Air Force. During my tours overseas I still remained a faithful hurrican fan even though I was overseas and couldn't see any games. I moved back to the states and saw my first game UM at Miami Nov 06. But I coudl tell the hurricanes didn't play like canes because of the lost of a team mate. may GOD be with the Pata family and the hurricane team.

I am a long-time University of Miami Football fan. I have been going to UM football games since I was a young girl with my brother and father. I was at the UM-FSU game this year with my dad.

A sidney this benji again I just found that I got a son on the way (I knew all along)nobody believes that yur gone lil cuz. All I think about is the good times with you I need you to know we all love you and was proud that you took our family to another level. Hey sidney its me again, Nelly I know you would want someone to tell these people how thankful you are for them to even take the time out from what they are doing To share there thoughts and most of all sympathy. Thank you all so much for your support. Bryan loves the fact that there are people out there that adored him. Again no words can explain hw grateful we are towards you all. i am a die hard hurricanes fan since i first them take the field when i was 4 years old. i never went to the school but i am the biggest cane you will ever meet. i loved bryan pata and followed him pretty heavily. i loved his raw football talent and how he was off the field and an inspiration to his team. i cried for him and his family when i first heard of this sensless and stupid act of violence. it figures, here's a guy doing all the right things and this terrible tragedy has to happen to him. as i was crying when i heard the news i thought it was ironic because now he is in heaven and in a far better place then we can imagine, so in reality if he remebered anything about life he would be crying for us!! god bless you and your family bryan, we will forever and ever miss you on aned off the field. GO CANES!!!!

Bryan I've always wanted to tell you that you were a real inspiration to me, I remember when you had told me that you were going to go to UM and play football, you were so happy, and I was so happy for you and I thought "man, if Bryan can make it, than I know I can too". My biggest regreat is not telling you how much you inspired me to be more in life, to know that there's something bigger and better out there for me, but I'm telling you now, thank you Bryan for Being an inspiration, a great person, and a good friend. It's so weird that a person that you don't even know can make such a big impact on your life. I was so sad to hear about your loss and for your family, it's horrible to loss such a good person. It's very hard losing someone you loved. Bryan Pata was a cousin of mine and you can say for a fact that, I'm truly gonna miss him. Bryan was a family man that earned every credit of being a man. He was the kind of guy that respected everyone. I respected this man because, not only he played football for UM, but he was a role model to his family & friends. I personally think that, his mom deserves all of the credit also because it has been hard being a single parent raising 9 kids, providing them with love and managing their education at the same time.

Im a full back who playes for north miami senior high were pata played for three years when he was in high school i dont no him that good but from what i know from my team mates he tells them that you can do anything that you want to do in life and that would boost my team mates up coming from a person who played at your school and now playes for the u. I don't even know where to start. It's been a while since i seen you and the last time i remember actually seeing you was memorial weekend. You were a good person with a big heart, even though you use to tease me in our gratigny and T.J days. The Lord had so much planned for you, and someone had to take that away. So many people from the block was so proud of you and your success. Lovelyne and myself were so happy for you when you got accepted to UM. We knew that was your dream, and we were very happy for you. Coach Clint Hurtt is my older brother. It's been days and I still don't know what to say to him. I'd never known Clint to shed a tear until the day he'd called our mom with the news.
