Hi, this is Richie Zaremba,I was the step grandson of the great Johnny Sain. Thank you for all of your nice comments, stories of memories gone by. Maryann my Grandmother really appreciate everyone's stories of love and admiration for him. He truly was a special man,and amazing storyteller. He would tell me all of these stories of his baseball years and he always got into his stories with so much passion in his voice and his eyes lit up with excitement, and as me being a hyper curious kid sometimes I just wanted to go and play with my toys, instead of sitting and listening about baseball players that I had never heard of lol I was a very hyperactive and nieve kid that I may not have really listened to his stories but I will always remember his love and great passion for the game. As I got older and wiser, especially in my teens, Johnny would give me words of advice, talked about important life lessons, and I remember some things he would talk about were stuff that I wouldnt have to worry about at the time, but I never forgot those talks. One that really stuck with me was to "Prepare Yourself To Take Care Of Yourself", meaning stay in school, go to work, save your money, and buy the things that you "need" and later you can buy things that you "want". Those few sentences stick with me all the time and have helped me now that im an adult. Johnny was a big health nut lol he always liked to find new ways or new things to help him stay as healthy as possible. I never will forget how much of a "Mr.Fix It" he was, he was always into repairing things or going to Sam's Club, (he loved that store). Everytime I went to my grandparents house, Johnny was either working on something new or going to card shows, he loved his fans so much. Johnny was such a greatful, selfless man. It was so hard to see him pass away too soon. I had so much respect for him and he will always be remembered and admired. -Richie Zaremba-

Johnny was my pitching coach when I signed with Atlanta in 1980. He was caring, wise and a true mentor. He always took the time to help explain what pitching was all about - both physically and psychologically. After I retired and found myself helping kids with their pitching mechanics from time to time, I would always quote Johnny and the kids would be thrilled. A very gentle soul and a great, caring teacher. My condolences to the family. (Scott Gordon Patterson Los Angeles)

To The Sain Family
I Had the Great Privilege may years ago of meeting Mr. Sain when he walked into my print shop in Downers Grove. We talk about compiling and printing his and Mr. Spahn major league stats for an autograph tour the two were doing.
All work stopped every time Johnny walked in. At every visit, all listened in awe of the details of each Pitch and the inning by inning descriptions told with Pride, Passion and Emotion.
Baseball was much more than a game to him. His Accomplishments were not just his, They were baseballs and all the players whom he took the field with.
His passion for the game a baseball was present in every word and his Sportsmanship an Honor are what made his era of baseball so great.
Mr. Sain was a True Gentlemen to which it was an Honor to have had any moments with.

Johnny was my mother's first cousin. Her name was Alouise Holloway Morris. She spoke often of the times Johnny & his family visited and played ball with her brother, Max. I was not aware that he had died. I was looking for information to give my grandson on his famous relative. I am sorry I was never able to meet him. May God bless you.

As baseball season starts, I thought of Johnny Sain when I stopped over to pick-up a electric grater for my moms kugala dish, we talked for hours showing me the world-series bats talking about the pitching days and how he wore longjohns to keep loosen up ,as it was getting very late I didnt want to leave . I still look at the autograph pictures and autograph of Johnny Sain and Warren Spahn together. I wish I can turn back time and do it again.

Mr. Sain and my Uncle, Buddy Hassett played on the Navy's Cloudbusters Team in 1942 in a game against the Yankees/Indians at Yankee Stadium. Ted Williams and Johhny Pesky also played that game and the Yanks/Indians All Stars were managed by Babe Ruth. The Navy won the game. When he told me about it, he said it was the only box score from a game that he pitched that he did not have and I set out to find it. When I sent it to him he called with some great memories of my Uncle. He was truly a gentleman and his remembrance of my Uncle were deeply appreciated.

I apologize for my delay in sending you my deepest sympathy in the passing of your beloved husband, Johnny.

When I was an eight year old kid, Johnny played ball with me, albeit briefly, many years ago on Pine Street in front of my grandmother's home (Mrs. Gregg) in Newport, Arkansas. A young George Kell was there also. Years later, as a staff writer for Ford Motor Company, I would again meet Johnny in Detroit, at Tiger Stadium, to interview him for an article in "Ford World". What a guy! Bet he's up there smiling down on us, tossing a ball with the angels. RIP, Kind Sir.

As a person whom his life briefly touched, my deepest condolences. In caring for John he and his family spent more time on issues not concerning themselves and made sure I had two autographed keepsakes for my two sons. They were angelic and unique, may this piece of him always remain here. God Bless

John, just heard of your passing and am so sorry. In the early 90s, I took my ten year old son to St.Louis to meet you and Warren Spahn (we drove by car from Livonia Michigan). Because of you we had a wonderful trip, and I have a great picture of the 3 of you which I eventually got autographed. YOU SHOULD BE IN THE HOF.,"Spawn and Sain-pray for rain", and God Bless Johnny Sain, a great American.

Cooperstown is missing 1 great ball player & coach. John Sain played with many great players & coached many young players that became Hall of Famers. Today, I dont beleive a pitcher could pitch 9 complete games in 29 days. I thank Ronda, who Ive know 5 years, for letting me into her dads life as a baseballer. At 60, I was 2 young to remember him pitching but Ronda showed me the way with all the articles & pics she shared with me. What a pitcher & coach he was. I never met John, but feel I knew him. He servered his country in WWII & in baseball. The rain in Havana let John rest in peace. God bless him, Mary Ann & all his family.

My dad. My hero. My motivator.
I will remember the comfort I always felt when I laid my hand inside yours, especially when I needed your strength to get me through a rough time. Then you would turn to me and say, "I never knew of anything that didn't have a way of working out..............somehow." And, it always did.
I think of you everyday and will always hold you near and dear to my heart. I love you, Dad.
God bless Mary Ann for "everything." She is, as you would say, "Really something!"

My grandfather, Luther Glendon Sain, remembered when Johnny Sain came to visit his family in Arkansas. They played stick ball with all of the men in the family for hours. I was even named after him at the insistence of my grandfather, and my son is the spitting image of Johnny. The Sain's in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico send their condolences to the family and say thanks for the memories.

On behalf of the Sain family and especially for my mom, Mary Ann Sain, who had been married to John for over 34 years, thank you to everyone for all the kind words and thoughts that have been eloquently expressed here.
Take away John's famous connection's with such people as Warren Spahn, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, nine World Series, four 20 game seasons, and coaching a multitude of 20 game winners and John was truly just a simple gentleman, friend, teacher, salesman, storyteller, positive preacher and thinker and foremost husband, father, grandfather and uncle to many. For that, he was most proud.
He will definitely be missed by our family, and remembered as someone who valued and celebrated life to the fullest, treating everyone he met with a handshake and a smile.
He was blessed in life, by the experiences that many of us can only dream about. We were blessed to be a small part of it.
"Spahn and Sain and Pray For Rain" and as was so appropriate, in the little town of Havana, Arkansas were John was laid to rest two weeks ago, we had a glorious rain!
Thank you to all.The stories and remeberences that many of you have shared have helped frame his lasting memory.

Coach Sain was a great baseball man with even greater baseball stories. I still use one of my favorite quotes of his, "A slider isn't anything more than a curveball with a little extree on it."

Dear Mary Ann & Family,
I am sorry to hear the news about Johnny. He was the best pitching coach any player could have had treating you the same if you were a first round prospect or a guy on the way out. I have many great memories of him as a coach and a friend. He sent me some really neat articles a couple of years ago and I will treasure them.
It was good to speak with you a few months ago. May God Bless you and the family.

while the braves were in boston, they were my favorite team........far better than the red sox as fan favorites.........
i remember johnny pitching at braves field on commonwealth ave in boston.......they were a terrific team of ballplayers, and i always enjoyed watching him pitch as a 12-year-old growing up in boston...that team and all of its players captured the hearts of most kids growing up in that area.....i finally met him and warren spahn, 50 years later when they were in columbus, ohio in 1998.........both were kind enough to sign several braves field memorabilia for me.........including a photo of johnny on the mound that i had taken during a game against the brooklyn dodgers in 1948....
my heartfelt condolences to the family.........

We had the privilege of meeting Mr. Sain at a local book store when our then three year old son walked up to him to ask his favorite color. Mr. Sain pointed to our son's blue shirt and said "That looks like a good one". Mr. Sain made quite an impression on all of us!

Johnny Sain was more than an all-star pitcher. And more than a "popular pitching coach" as the a.p. story says. Lets not forget, Leo Mazzone learned a lot from Sain, and passed it on to Braves pitchers for 25 years! So you could say his contribution to Braves baseball was more than part of a Spahn and Sain duo.....but all the way through to the next century. Another legend indeed, has passed.
