Damien Nash Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2007.
DENVER (AP) - Broncos running back Damien Nash collapsed and died after a charity basketball game in suburban St. Louis on Saturday, less than two months after the slaying of teammate Darrent Williams.

"We have been informed of the passing of Damien Nash," team spokesman Jim Saccomano said Saturday night. "We are attempting to get more details. ... We do know it's true."

Officials at Christian Hospital in St. Louis said the 24-year-old Nash died early Saturday evening. The cause of death wasn't immediately determined.

Nash collapsed shortly after participating in the game benefiting a foundation named for older brother Darris Nash. The foundation raises money for heart transplant research. It was established last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

"The Denver Broncos organization is once again struck with profound sadness over the tragic loss of one of our players," team owner Pat Bowlen said in a statement. "This is a tremendous tragedy and our hearts go out to the entire Nash family."

The Broncos are still reeling from the slaying of Williams, who was shot once in the neck while leaving a New Year's Eve party in his rented stretch Hummer in downtown Denver hours after the season ended. His slaying remains unsolved.

"The Broncos family has suffered a great loss with the passing of Damien Nash," coach Mike Shanahan said from Indianapolis, where he was attending the NFL's scouting combine along with general manager Ted Sundquist. "I am stunned and deeply saddened by this tragedy, and send my deepest condolences to Damien's family."

Nash was from East St. Louis, Ill., and played two years at Missouri after playing at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. A fifth-round draft choice by Tennessee in 2005, he played in three games for the Titans before his release.

The Broncos signed him as a free agent last season and he played in three games, rushing for 98 yards on 24 carries.

To the family of DD, Our heart felt condolences go out to you. We are friends of DD from Sierra Vista and the NYA Football Team.
I can remember when DD use to come to my apartment and play with my children and walk with them to the bus stop in the morning on the way to Kirby. He was always a very pleasant young man and always smiling. When ever my sons would have a football game with NYA we, would always stay after just to see DD play. He brought much excitment to the game. I even brought my mother to a game so she could see how fast he could run. When DD moved away, it was to my delight to see him on my mother's front one day riding his bike visiting with my kids on Milburn, I believe he said his Grandmother lived around the corner. My heart hurt when I saw the news and my heart still hurts, I have to blink back tears. He was such a treasure and inspiration to every one God put in his path. My 12 year old son even had the chance to meet him at some type of benefit, doing what he did best, spending time and making others happy. Judy, Kim, Darris, and little Phaith, my heart really goes out to you all. I can only imagine your pain. I think about you all and pray for you often. To DD's Grandma, you are also in my prayers, and your Grandson was truly a gift taken too soon for us.
Stay close to God and know that, he is carrying you in your time of sorrow.

Man Dee Dee was a cool cat. I remember, in high school, giving him altoids for that breath of his. And if you really knew him, you knew his breath uses to be clowning. Every time he would see me, he would just ask me for some. I'm goin to miss you, man. To the Nash Family, keep the faith. I lose my brother to the street when he was just 23. He was shoot 6 times. He didn't even get to see his son before he died. Why am I telling you this? Because life is not promise to us. So we got to make the best of what we got. Live every day like it's your last. Be strong, each day get just a little bit better. GOD IS LOVE. I'll keep Dee Dee's wife, child, and family in my prayers. God Bless!

DD I just want you to know that you will be missed. You always brought a smile to my face even when I didn't want to smile. I am still in disbelief. When I walked into your visitation service, I thought it was all a joke. I walked up to you and was just waiting for you to wake up. That's when I realized it wasn't a dream. You are in a much better place now than you were here on earth. I'm just glad I had to chance to get to know you. Just know that just like God is taking care of you, he will take care of your family and all those you touched. So rest easy and just enjoy the after life. RIP DD!!!!

February 28, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
