Warren Avis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 24, 2007.
DETROIT (AP) - Warren Avis, a canny entrepreneur for decades after selling the nation's first car rental business to be located at airports, died Tuesday. He was 92.

The founder of Avis Rent A Car died of natural causes at his farm in Ann Arbor with his wife, Yanna, at his side, the Avis family said in a statement.

A decorated bomber pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, Avis formed his car rental company in 1946 at airports in Miami and Ypsilanti, Michigan, with an investment of $85,000 (euro62,582). He started with two employees and fewer than 200 cars.

Avis said he got the idea for the business when he was a pilot and could not find ground transportation once he arrived at airports.

Avis built what became the world's largest car rental system until it was overtaken by Hertz after years of ferocious competition. Avis sold his interest in the business for $8 million in 1954.

The company now is called Avis Rent A Car System LLC and is part of Parsippany, New Jersey-based Avis Budget Group, Inc.

Later in his career, Avis headed Avis Enterprises, which invested in high-technology electronics companies, mostly in the U.S. Midwest. His other ventures included Avis Sports Inc., which owned wholesale sporting goods businesses in Portland, Oregon, Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and Morehead City, North Carolina.

A Ford Motor Co. dealership in the Detroit suburb of Southfield that preceded the car-rental business still bears his name, while AvisFarms, a pair of office parks in Ann Arbor, were sold in recent years, said Patricia Kalmbach, president of Avis Enterprises.

After selling a Detroit-based manufacturing conglomerate, Avis in 1970 moved to the farm in Ann Arbor, where he would operate his businesses from a converted barn, said Kalmbach, who began with Avis as a bookkeeper in 1981.

With success, Avis befriended famous socialites including actor Cary Grant, hotelier Nicky Hilton and entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr.

"Mr. Avis personally, you knew when he walked in the room he was somebody, he had that presence," Kalmbach said. "He was shrewd but he truly believed in the team approach and listening to people at all levels."

Avis was born in Bay City in 1915 and joined the military after graduating from high school. After selling the car-rental giant, Avis began converting rental properties to condominiums. In the 1970s, he founded Behavioral Science Training Laboratories Inc., which focused on human relations in business management.

He would later write seven books, including his 1986 business memoir "Take a Chance to be First," which chronicled the Avis Rent A Car story.

In 2002, Avis helped dedicate an exhibit in his honor at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn.

In addition to his farm, Avis and his wife maintained residences in New York and Acapulco, Mexico, where he enjoyed parasailing and other watersports, Kalmbach said.

"He loved the outdoors," she said. "He liked riding around on the tractor."

Avis is survived his wife of 26 years, and three children and six grandchildren from a previous marriage.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Back in 1968 a young high school student had a school assignment to profile an American business pioneer. After numerous attempts at reaching Warren Avis, the young man finally got through and asked his prepared business questions. Mr. Avis shared some memorable advice that lingers, even today, with that young man. In fact, Mr Avis commented on the young man's tenacity in trying to reach him. He told the young man that he should consider a career at Avis after college. That young man was me. And although I don't work at Avis today, I am a contractor for Avis. And, to this day, I give credit to Mr Avis for my work ethic and risk assessments. And so, for that, Mr. Avis, I will always be grateful. Thank you for all you did and all the people that you touched.

For Warren...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Richard Avis

August 12, 2009

Having failed to meet him has left a void in my life. Thanks to my Father Norwood Avis, Grandfather Donald Avis and Great-Uncle Bruce Avis, I grew up hearing so many colorful stories of Warren's exploits and vigor for life. I'm proud to be a blood-relative, a multi-patent holding inventor, Air Force vet, and chronically fidgety, like he was. As a fairly startling look-alike, I had always wanted to knock on Warren's office door, shake his hand and say, "Hello Sir, I'm Richard, your cousin from the other side of the state. I have some idea's you may find interesting..."
I bet he would have enjoyed that, but not as much as me.
A great man. A great American. The genuine article.
A hero to me.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

May God Bless And Comfort You
By: Charles G. Turner, Sr.

At times like this when we don’t know what to do
Just talk to God and he will see you through
When words sometimes just won’t do and you don’t know what to say
Just talk to God and let him have his way

When friends and family come and go
Just remember that God has an open door
At times like this when words alone won’t do
May God bless and comfort you
