Ivan Dixon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 19, 2008.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Actor Ivan Dixon, who brought the problems and promise of contemporary blacks to life in the film "Nothing But a Man" and portrayed the levelheaded POW Kinchloe in TV's "Hogan's Heroes," has died. He was 76.

Dixon died Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte after a hemorrhage, said his daughter, Doris Nomathande Dixon of Charlotte. He had suffered complications from kidney failure, she said.

Dixon, who also directed scores of television shows, began his acting career in the late 1950s. He appeared on Broadway in William Saroyan's 1957 "The Cave Dwellers" and in playwright Lorraine Hansberry's groundbreaking 1959 drama of black life, "A Raisin in the Sun." In the latter, he played a Nigerian student visiting the United States, a role he repeated in the film version.

While not a hit, the 1964 "Nothing But a Man," in which Dixon co-starred with Abbey Lincoln, also drew praise as a rare, early effort to bring the lives of black Americans to the big screen.

Other film credits included "Something of Value," "A Patch of Blue" and the cult favorite "Car Wash."

"As an actor, you had to be careful," said Sidney Poitier, star of "Patch of Blue" and a longtime friend. "He was quite likely to walk off with the scene."

In 1967, Dixon starred in a CBS Playhouse drama, "The Final War of Olly Winter," about a veteran of World War II and Korea who decided that Vietnam would be his final war. The role brought Dixon an Emmy nomination for best single performance by an actor.

He was probably best known for the role of Staff Sgt. James Kinchloe on "Hogan's Heroes," the hit 1960s sitcom set in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.

The technically adept Kinchloe was in charge of electronic communications and could mimic German officers on the radio or phone.

Dixon was active in efforts to get better parts for blacks in movies and television, telling The New York Times in 1967: "Sponsors haven't wanted anything negative connected with their products. We must convince them that the Negro is not negative."

"Heretofore, people have thought that, to use a Negro, the story must pit black against white. Maybe we're getting to the problems of human beings who happen to be black."

While Dixon was most proud of roles such as those in "A Raisin in the Sun" and "Nothing But a Man," he had no problem about being recognized for Kinchloe, his daughter said.

"It was a pivotal role as well, because there were not as many blacks in TV series at that time," Nomathande Dixon said. "He did have some personal issues with that role, but it also launched him into directing."

Dixon also directed numerous episodes of TV shows, including "The Waltons," "The Rockford Files," "Magnum, P.I." and "In the Heat of the Night."

In 1973, he directed the film "The Spook Who Sat by the Door," a political drama based on a novel about a black CIA agent who becomes a revolutionary. He also directed the 1972 "blaxploitation" story "Trouble Man."

His honors included four NAACP Image Awards, the National Black Theatre Award and the Paul Robeson Pioneer Award from the Black American Cinema Society.

Born in 1931 in New York, Dixon graduated in 1954 from North Carolina Central University in Durham.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife of 53 years, Berlie Dixon of Charlotte, and a son, Alan Kimara Dixon of Oakland. At Dixon's request, no memorial or funeral is planned, the family said.

Watching Unsung Car Wash my goodness had no idea Ivan was the brother in Hogans Heroes. I was in High School when this movie came out. So so powerful and way ahead of its time. I lived in Charlotte 1984 to 2015. Would have loved to meet Mr Dixon and his family. His acting should have had far more recognition. Blessings to him and his family.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

To The Family Of Ivan Dixon,
He was one of the first Blacks on tv I saw in my youth that acted in a sitcome without being a comedian or comic relief. I just wish he did more shows on both sides of the camera.
I also wish I had been able to purchase that album of the cast I saw in a record store back in the 1980's.

To The Dixon Family:

Ivan Dixon has always been a personal hero to me and members of my family. To this day I consider NOTHING BUT A MAN to be the finest portrayal of the black male psyche ever put on film and a large measure of that success must go to Mr. Dixon's powerful portrayal. I had the pleasure of meeting him once years ago and found him to be as gracious and honorable in real life as he was onscreen. We are all the better that he once walked amongst us.

To Mr. Dixon's family,
I was born in 1961 in New Hampshire where I continue to live with my wife and children today. I had a Hogan's Heroe's lunchbox all through grammer school. I truly enjoyed your husband's/father's work on that series as a child and realized time and time again that without his ability to mimic a character or work his magic with the electronics the rest of his prison mates would have had more severe consequences.
As a living kidney donor, I realize that I may have more in common with you dad as well. I wish you all the best during this time. I always appreciated Mr. Dixon.

One of the most powerful television performances I have ever seen was of Mr. Dixon in: THE FINAL WAR OF OLLIE WINTER. That program came on one night in 1967 when I was twelve years old, and I understood his powerful portrayal in that play. I have been a quiet fan of his ever since. I have been forever touched and inspired by his dignity and strength as an actor, and as a man. I always felt more empowered just thinking of him because I felt and witnessed the power of his presence.

As a youth growing up in Gary, Indiana we were coming through a period when being black was not so proud, that is until the likes of Brother Ivan Dixon came along. I immediately connected with this brother because he was good looking, cool, laid back and he had a pivitol role as a "Staff Sargent" who was in charge of the most important part of the military operation that was in place inside the prison setting on the popular TV series Hogan's Hero's which happened to be my favorite television show all because of Mr. Dixon. I grew up following this man's career and I always aspired to be him. Not be like him but I wanted to be him. That's how great his impact was upon me. I was then and am now so proud of him for the positive influence that he gave us as a people. In my opinion he was a great man and wonderful human being. I am so certain of this for many reasons. One is the fact that he was married to one woman for over 50 years, another great accomplishment and attestment to who he was and how dynamic he is even in death. Farewell Mr. Dixon and I pray that God will give you the peace that you seek after and so well deserve. To the Dixon family I pray that the precious memories of your love one bring you comfort and joy during this difficult moment. May God richly bless you all very much.

To the family of Ivan Dixon: I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your love one. During such a difficult time I found it comforting to know that the Bible promises of a time when we will no longer have to experience death. This is found at Revelation 21:4 where it says:"God will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore". I hope you to will find comfort in this scripture during such a difficult time.
Sincerely,
