Charles Chittick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2008.
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- A retired patent lawyer who turned down a job offer from Thomas Edison and feuded with Humphrey Bogart as a teenager has died at age 107.

Charles Yardley Chittick died Friday, a week and a half after injuring himself in a fall at his retirement home.

Last month, Chittick, in a golf cart, led the reunion procession at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., where he and Bogart clashed. He was the only surviving member of the class of 1918.

"He used to kiddingly say he didn't become famous until he reached 100," daughter-in-law Elizabeth Chittick said Monday.

Chittick lived alone at Pleasant View Retirement Community and used a walker to get around, including to the dining room where he fell while rising from a table, injuring his spine, his lawyer and friend, John Ransmeier, said.

"He was always willing to talk about the past and always willing to share his stories," said his friend and chauffeur Jennifer "Jiffi" Rainie of Concord. "He had a lot of stories. He remembered everything."

After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the young engineer chose a job with a golf club manufacturer because it sounded like more fun than working for Edison. The job piqued his interest in the law, which became his career.

As students at Phillips Academy, Chittick and Bogart lived across a hall from each other, but didn't get along, according a book about the movie star's early years. They once got into a scuffle after Chittick refused to polish Bogart's shoes, the book said.

Chittick was honored at the Andover graduation, with a resolution pardoning him for hijinks as a student nine decades ago. The resolution cited a diary entry he wrote in 1918 about sneaking off campus one night with Bogart and others to watch a fire in a nearby town.

"He always had that sparkle in his eye and that nice little chuckle," Rainie said. "Even two days before he died, he was chuckling."

Chittick also was known for his love of golf and his sense of style. In the 11 years Rainie knew him, Chittick always dressed in a suit and bow tie.

"His eyesight was not very good, but he could see that someone wasn't dressed very sharply," Rainie said. "He'd say 'Why doesn't that person dress better?'"

Chittick had two sons by his first wife, Dorothy. He moved to Pleasant View from Wakefield, N.H., after his second wife, Ruth, died in 1997.

He is survived by his son Charles Jr., 86, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Son John died in 1992.

"He lived a very, very full life and he was ready to be on his way," said his nursing assistant, Betty Jones. "But he will be missed, that is sure."

I would have really liked to have been related to this guy, however remotely. My Mother was Blanche Chittick born in Peoria, Ill. When asked her maiden name she would say, "Chittick, but be careful how you pronounce it!"

He spurred us on to determine our mutual link; although we haven't yet been successful we'll keep trying. At 105, when I last saw him, he hadn't lost any of his wit and rougishness. We'll miss him.

I did not know Charles, or have even heard of him until now, but reading about him makes me wish I could have met him. I kind of hate to say it, but his obituary made me smile and kind of chuckle. He sounds like a wonderful man who lead a full, happy life.

It is always sad to lose a loved one, but Charles Y. Chittick was blessed to live not only the 107 years, but to have lived such an accomplished life along the way.

May his memory help ease your sorrow, yet, to also allow his being, to be a guideline for those whom he has left behind.

May he now rest in peace.

Psalms 91:14-16 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.(KJV)

I LOVE people like this, who take life and live it to its fullest and then remember their stories to tell to the 'next generation'. I imagine that the angels are howling with laughter at Mr. Chittick's tales about now. Rest in peace-you earned it!

He sounds like a most delightful man. I wish I had the chance to have known or at least had a few hours to listen to his stories about life so long ago..... so many links to our past are going away. It makes me sad. May Mr. Chittick rest in peace and his family find comfort in his long and fruitful life.

To the family Of Charels, so sorry for the loss of your loved one. he must have been a great person to know. you are so lucky to have had him for such a long time. he must have been a living history book. I wish I could have met him. He has been on the earth for 107 years, wow, that is something. he has seen every thing from horse and wagon, to rocket ships. Charles had a full life that is for sure. May God hold dear Charels close to his heart forever in heaven. I read a saying that reminded me of this occasion. it is, (Do not shed a tear for me because I am gone, smile, because you knew me).
