Millard Fuller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 3, 2009.
ATLANTA (AP) - Millard Fuller, the millionaire entrepreneur who gave it all away to help found the Christian house-building charity Habitat for Humanity, died Tuesday. He was 74.

Fuller died about 3 a.m. after being taken to a hospital emergency room, according to his wife, Linda. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Linda Fuller, in a telephone interview from the couple's home in Americus, said her husband was complaining of chest pains, headache and difficulty swallowing.

The couple was to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August with a 100-house "blitz build" across the globe, she said.

"We'll probably go ahead with the 'blitz build.' Millard would not want people to mourn his death," she said. "He would be more interested in having people put on a tool belt and build a house for people in need."

One of Habitat's highest-profile volunteers, former President Jimmy Carter, called Fuller "one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known.

"He used his remarkable gifts as an entrepreneur for the benefit of millions of needy people around the world by providing them with decent housing," Carter said in a statement. "As the founder of Habitat for Humanity and later the Fuller Center, he was an inspiration to me, other members of our family and an untold number of volunteers who worked side-by-side under his leadership."

After running Habitat for Humanity with his wife for nearly three decades, Fuller lost control of the charity in a conflict with its board. When ousted in January 2005, he and his wife vowed to continue working on housing the poor and started The Fuller Center for Housing to raise money for Habitat affiliates.

The son of a widower farmer in the cotton-mill town of Lanett, Ala., Fuller earned his first profit at age 6, selling a pig. While studying law at the University of Alabama, he formed a direct-marketing company with Morris Dees - later founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center - focusing on selling cookbooks and candy to high school chapters of the Future Homemakers of America. That business would make them millionaires before they were 30.

When Fuller's capitalist drive threatened to kill his marriage, Fuller and his wife, who wed in college, decided to sell everything and devote themselves to the Christian values they grew up with.

"I gave away about $1 million," Fuller said in a 2004 interview with The Associated Press. "I wasn't a multimillionaire; I was a poor millionaire."

The couple's search for a mission led them to Koinonia, an interracial agricultural collective outside Americus in south Georgia. It was there with Koinonia founder Clarence Jordan that the Fullers developed the concept of building no-interest housing for the poor - an idea that eventually grew into Habitat for Humanity.

Founded in 1976, Habitat's first headquarters was a tiny gray frame house on Americus' Church Street, which doubled as Fuller's law office. For the first 14 years, Fuller's salary was just $15,000; his wife worked 10 years for free.

Habitat grew from those humble beginnings to a worldwide network that has built more than 300,000 houses, providing shelter to more than 1.5 million people. Preaching the "theology of the hammer," Fuller built an army of volunteers that included former U.S. presidents, other world leaders and Hollywood celebrities.

"The Bible says, 'The Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,'" he told the AP in 2004. "That covers just about everything. God's money is just in the pockets of people, and we've got to extract it."

People receiving homes from the charity are required to work on their own houses, investing what the Fullers called "sweat equity" in their own futures.

Fuller's works won him numerous accolades, including a 1996 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. For nearly three decades, he was the public face of Habitat, traveling the world to hammer nails and press bricks from local clay alongside some of the Earth's poorest.

But a scandal that had smoldered for years flared anew in 2004 to sully Fuller's legacy.

Habitat's international board moved to oust Fuller from his position of chief executive officer after allegations surfaced that he had sexually harassed a female staff member in 2003. The move came despite the board's conclusion that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the charge.

However, the allegations of inappropriate behavior mirrored complaints in 1990 from female staffers and volunteers that led to Fuller's yearlong exile from the organization's headquarters.

Fuller acknowledged he had kissed and hugged the women who made the 1990 complaints, but argued they had misinterpreted his actions. But he categorically denied the later charge, telling the AP in 2004 that "there's not even the tiniest element of truth in it."

President Carter had to intervene in both of those instances to prevent the board from ousting Fuller.

In 2004, Fuller reached a compromise that allowed him to stay on in the largely ceremonial role of "founder and president." However, the Fullers backed out of an agreement not to discuss the situation publicly, and the board voted in January 2005 to oust Fuller and his wife.

Months later, the Fullers and their supporters formed The Fuller Center for Housing, a fundraising group for charitable home-building efforts. The new group was originally called Building Habitat, but that name was quickly dropped after Habitat for Humanity sued over Fuller's use of the word "Habitat," arguing it was a trademark infringement and could interfere with Habitat's business and fundraising.

Fuller attributed his ouster to disagreements with the board over whether to slow the charity's growth. He argued Habitat was becoming more bureaucracy than mission.

"If we lose the 'movement mentality' we will not go out of existence, but we will stagnate and become just 'another nonprofit' doing good work across the county and around the world," he wrote in a letter to the committee that searched for his successor as CEO.

Throughout the scandal, Fuller insisted that he did not want to do anything that would compromise Habitat's mission.

"I've always felt that this is God's work," he said. "And it's always been bigger than me, from day one."

Fuller is survived by his wife and four children. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Mrs.Linda Fuller, family and friends of Millard Fuller, our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. Many are the memories you have that will bring you comfort.

It was a beautiful memeorial service at Ebenezer Baptist Church. It was nice to meet the families and friends of Millard and hear the wonderful stories. I didn't want to miss this memorial, for anything. Fullers, both Linda and Millard have enabled me to participate in some many great volunteer opportunies. Thanks !!!

My husband and I starting volunteering with Habitat for Humanity back in 1986 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and continue to be moved to help others have a decent home here in Alpharetta,GA. Along with 4 vacation weeks with Habitat, which were 3 blitz builds (Lagrange,GA; Jackson, MI; Coventington, LA) and a week in Americus, GA working on the 1st phase of the Global Village. Which is where I got to meet Millard and get this great picture taken. We also met again in Atlanta, GA as the mentors for the Evans family, whose sponsor was the Potter house and were being introduced at a T D Jakes convention. Just this past year, I invited my mom to do a blitz build in LA and on our way there, we stayed the night at Koinonia Farms, visited Americus and Plains, GA to learn about the history of how things began. It is so amazing to think of how the Fullers has grown HFH charity and the Fuller Center. My husband and I are looking into the Fuller Center blitz build later the Fall.

We will miss Millard, yet keep him & his message with us, as we continue to carry on with his volunteer work and make this world a better place for all.

I have been associated with our local Habitat affiliate here in Braintree, MA since early 2005 and it was Mr Fuller's example on how to view life and what is truly important that inspired me to join. He will be missed and I know his family misses him dearly. I am sorry about your loss. Truly I am. But please know it was my involvement in Habitat for Humanity that helped me see that it is so important to help others even when I lost my wife a few years ago. Despite the sadness in losing the one you love it was comforting to know that helping others is what Christ asks us to do and supercedes our loss of our loved ones. We will be with them eventually for eternity and this life is just a blink of the eye. For the time we are all here, we need to do His work here on Earth. We need to continue the mission that Millard so wonderfully created. It is the least we can do to honor a great man's life and to please Christ our Lord.

Millard,

My peace be with you. I met you when i was 27yrs old and the conversation inspired me to start 4 non-profits in my very poor community... Ten years later it has helped 1,000's of families... You are a true servant of GOD!

Millard Fuller is a larger-than-life character. Literally. In my play, The Glory Man (www.dennishassell.com), which premiered in Virginia just before his death, the beginning of Millard and Linda's adventure is just beginning. And he and Linda have a story that seems too amazing to be true. But it is.

Condolences to Linda, the kids and the grandkids, and to co-workers.

I worked with Habitat for Humanity from 1990 till 1995 as an International Partner in Latin America. I was greatly saddened to hear of Millard's death, though I know he is communing with Jesus as I write this. Millard should certainly receive those words we all covet, "well done, my good and faithful servant."

After reading one of Millard's books, I was convinced to sell our house and give away many material possessions. We now work in a ministry and my focus has changed to serving others even more. I never got to write Millard and tell him how he impacted my life, but I am grateful. I feel Millard's light still shines; he just passed the torch to others to carry on. My condolences to Linda, his family, and his many supporters. Let's keep the dream alive!

Linda:

Thank you for the blessing that you and Millard have been to so many people around the world.

I had the chance to meet your wonderful husband last year when he gave a fabulous speech at the AIA convention in Boston.

What an inspiration!

Thank you and may God bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand here on earth until it is time for you to be reunited with Millard.

Thanks to Millard Fuller, I had the priviledge of building homes in Ghana with Habitat for Humanity. God found me during that time of service. Since then, I've experienced a peaceful spirit in my heart.

Surely, Mr. Fuller has a palatial estate reserved for him in heaven. Hopefully, I can get his address to visit him when I get there.

Let the heavens rejoice. God bless you Mr. Fuller.

Hopi Prayer
Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain.
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die.

I have been a Habitat Executive Director for the past 12 years and had the pleasure to meet Millard several times. I am indebted to Millard and Linda for answering the call to create Habitat. I have had the pleasure to serve my calling in this ministry as well. Millard's legacy will live on in the over million persons housed since 1976.

Dear Linda and Family,

My family wish we could be there to join with you in celebrating the extraordinary life of Millard. Instead, I would like to let you know what an inspiration Millard was to my father, Rev. George Anderson. After meeting Millard back in the early eighties, Dad was "charged up" and ready to spread the HFH concept to all "up north". The Canadian HFH was born as a result of that meeting.

May the Holy Spirit be a comfort to each of you these next days, as you celebrate the life of God's special servant, Millard.

Millard was an amazing person. He and Linda did such great things for some many families and inspired countless others to pick up a hammer and/or a checkbook in the effort to eliminate poverty housing. Dearest Linda and family,
My name is Barbara N Taylor-Bray and my heart is extended to you for your loss. I am one of the many thousands of homeowners that had the pleasure to own a Habitat House. Denise Hayes, my daughter Tambra Taylor and I became the first homeowners to help build homes in an overseas work camp in the early 90's. My daughter became the youngest and paved the way for other teens to participate. Millard touched all of our lives in North Carolina in more ways than just house building. Mr. Fuller always thought of others and always made time to say how special we were to him. I still remember when you and Millard came by my craft business in Greensboro, NC just to say hello and make a purchase. Millard also wrote about me and my family in his book "Theology of the Hammer" and that was such a blessing and honor to me.

My first meeting with you and Millard was in Columbus Ohio when he ask me to share my story at the conference. My life changed after that and I became active in joining with his vision giving back to others. Whenever he came to Greensboro he'd always ask "where's my friend Barbara". He never forgot the little people that became big in his life. The last time I saw him was in High Point, NC when I presented him with a painting that I painted just for him. A painting of Oaka Hester Park in Greensboro, NC. Millard graciously accepted it and said "it made his day" because he wasn't having a very good day that day. I will always love, respect and remember Millard and you for all that you did to think of others when the world looks down on them. I will miss him but God only loaned him to us and we will see him again in the Lord. I love you Linda and hope we will meet again. God bless you at this time of your loss.

Sincerely,
Barbara N. Taylor-Bray

Linda,
As we approach this memorial weekend, I can only say that getting to know you and Millard has been a life-changing experience. I was committed to the philosophy which you two started in 1976. But becoming closer to you in work and faith over the last couple of years has been the inspiration to follow Millard's vision until God calls me home. All the superlatives and adjectives have been offered to you by now. So please simply know this: mine is only one of millions of lives touched by this remarkable servant of God. And I deeply appreciate you for being such a steadfast and loving partner.
I won't be able to be in Atlanta, but we are having a simultaneous memorial service in Webster Parish. We have about 20 RV Builders with us right now, and it will be great hearing some of their recollections and experiences....along with ours.
God bless you as we join you in moving forward with Millard's Legacy.

Linda, I am thinking of you during this time. Millard's legacy is incredible - you changed not only the lives of homeowners worldwide, but also the lives of all of us who worked for Habitat during the years and went on to create careers working with low-income families. Thank you for the vision that you and Millard created, the respect that you urged us to show all people, and for showing that an idea could be translated into action. I now travel the country helping to create children's playrooms in homeless shelters, and much of what I learned about how to help people work together came directly from Habitat.

Linda, thank you for the invitation to attend the celebration and YES we will be there remembering the one whom we all came to love and respect around the world. It was one of my fondest memories in life to have known and worked alongside Millard and you. He was not only my boss but my friend, which he proved even in my leaving due to Alzheimer's. Joyce and I will always continue to keep you, your family and ministry in our prayers. God is faithful to those He has called out, and we thank you and Millard for all your love and faithfulness to that Calling.

A Friend is Someone who Reaches for your Hand, But touches your Heart...that describes Millard Fuller!

Dear Linda and family,
I'll never forget that Sunday afternoon in NYC when the buses from Georgia pulled up in front of Metro Baptist Church and the work crew began unloading in preparation for working on the lower east side of Manhattan. What a wonderful week it was and I'll be forever grateful for what you, Millard, the Carters and all he others did that week to retore a multi-family building and restore confidence to those living on the lower east side.

I'll also never forget the breakfasts and dinners each day during the work week. I also have fond memories of the midweek service at which each member of the work team was presented with a plaque and hammer attached to planking taken from the worksite. WHAT A WEEK.

I'm so sorry Millard made his transition, but I'm sure heaven is undergoing a massive reconstruction and will be a more comfortable place for us all!

Dear Linda and family:

Millard was a real inspiration to me in his service to the Lord through Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing.
I participated in the 1998 Jimmy Carter Work Project in Houston and the 2000 Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity build in Southern California and hope to participate in future builds with the Center.
I only met Millard once, in Americus in April, 2007, when he preached the sermon at the Maranatha Baptist church there, and regret not having had the chance to share some conversations with him. In his letters, thanking me for my support, he was always supportive, encouraging and excited about how fast the new Center was expanding.
May God comfort you and your family at this time, and may we honor Millard by diligently continuing the work that he so loved.

I cannot stop thinking about Millard's impact on the world! I have been a supporter for Habitat and The Fuller Center since I started with my Habitat Spring Breaks in college.

I get looks from people like I am weird or something. Regardless, my motivations and drive continue to be renewed at such a powerful level! It is a truly wonderful feeling to go out and talk about the housing ministry and how it has given so much hope to so many people!

I thank God for you, Linda, and for Millard!

We will always cherish the times that we were able to spend together. Swinging a hammer with Millard and Linda was one one our favorite adventures. They were always good times. Millard taught us the importance of making a difference in other people's life. He taught us how to walk the walk and leave the talking to others. Millard taught us that personal possessions are not important and what is important is what you possess in your heart. He will truly be missed by all that knew him.

To you Linda, you will be in our thoughts and prayers. We know that you will be a stronger person because of your faith. We will always remember working with you in Nazareth Village. What an exciting time in the history of the Holy Land. Hope to see you soon and remember that Millard is in Heaven showing Noah a few tricks of the trade on how he could have built more boats.

Dear Linda and Family, my prayers are with you. As a volunteer, I was very touched by Mr. Fuller’s uncompromising dedication to the poor and the tremendous worldwide ripple effect that resulted. Few, like Millard, have the strength to redirect their entire life, the lives of their family, and their wealth to respond to Christ’s commandment to love Him and to love one another. With your support, Mr. Fuller was able to remind us of what one man with a vision is able to do by building urgently needed affordable no interest no profit housing for the globally marginalized. On my first build, I was amazed at the uplifting tone of the build, from the circle prayer beginning and ending each day, to the camaraderie and kindnesses extended in all circumstances amongst the participants and homeowners - all a reflection of Millard’s ever present enthusiasm, enhancing our efforts and inspiring us in our’ commitment to assist the homeowner to proudly construct their own habitats for themselves and their families. A great humanitarian, a loving husband and father, a good friend.

The first time I meat Millard and Linda was at Granger Community Church and they so inspired me that I had to get involved in his mission and for the next two years I was. Yet as life goes on somehow most of us stray from Gods path of helping others, but Linda you and Milard never did. Once again you have both inspired me and from here on in I am going to strive every day to follow the path Gods has set before me and to meet his expectations of me. I can never succeed in the fashion that you and Millard did, but I will do my best.

All I can think of and see right now is Millard passing thru the gate of Heaven and meeting God and being told "Welcome Home My Good and Faithful Servant".

Lastley from here on in each time I hear thunder I am going to have to ask myself is that God speaking or is it Millard working with the host of the Heavens making improvements.

Keeping you all in my prayers.

The burial of this humble, but world-changing man was so perfect and was pure Millard. From the long, reflective walk back to the gravesite, to the poignancy of Linda's laying a hammer on the simple, pine casket, to the gentle signing of "We Shall Overcome", to the privilege given us of shoveling some dirt, and for me, personally, Linda's outburst of love for my son and I, it was so beautiful. And so sad. But what we must take from it all, beyond all our "Millard stories", is commitment to redouble our efforts to help assure a roof over every child's head in a simple, decent home.

I'll never forget Millard and Linda coming up to a pizza joint on a sidewalk in Brazil and sitting down at the table in the open seats next to me. At first I was intimidated - and then just inspired. As one of the other workers and I drove back from Rio to Sao Paulo, we were so engrossed in our Habitat experience that we ran out of gas - the only time in my life!

He was an inspiration for a lot of folks on this earth. Now it's time to pass it on to the angels, who I'm sure are celebrating his arrival!

Millard & Linda are and always will be my heroes. Millard has been my distant mentor, teacher and "father" in the "love your neighbor" ministry, without him knowing it. I miss Millard deeply. I honor and want to continue honoring Millard and Linda.

Millard Fuller was a truly inspirational person and an amazing example of the influence the life of one person can make in the world today. Throughout the world there are people dedicated to his vision of eliminating poverty housing, his influence even in a little country like New Zealand has been profound.

Your legacy will continue to live on.
You truly were an amazing man who taught me so much about giving of myself to others. You truly touched me heart over the years. I learned an abundance about what happiness, giving & caring is all about. You taught me so much about what Christianity is about. You were always so kind, honest, genuine & so full of life. Whenever I had a question you always took the time to answer me. Thank you for that! We will never forget you! May you forever be at Peace with our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ! God Bless you Millard! Dr Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity and the Fuller Center for Housing was a legend. He symbolized the Christian virtues of love, compassion and sacrifice. The vacuum created by his absence cannot be filled by any one else becuase he was unparalleled in the whole history of philanthropy. Now that he has left for his heavenly house, it is the duty of every lover of fellow-beings to follow Millard's footsteps and help the unsheltered brethren all over the world. I offer my tearful homage to Millard Fuller and and prayerful condolences to his bereaved family although I am in a far-off continent.

Dear Linda and family,
How much Habitat and you and Millard have meant to me over the years! Talking with emotional families at the 35,000th house build in Brazil made me realize the impact the two of you have made on hundreds of thousands of lives, mine included. I'm so glad for the opportunity to know the two of you and to work together in Brazil and Shreveport. May God continue to comfort you and give you peace as you mourn Millard's death.

To Linda and family, I was sorry to just learn today of Millards passing. I just spoke of the impact of Habitat for Humanity and ultimately Linda and Millard in church on Sunday. Millard and Linda are two of the most influential persons in my life. Though I have not seen you for many years, our time together and the lessons I learned from you about compassion and mercy and justice guide me every day. Heaven is a brighter place with Millard in it ranks. Thank you Millard for all that you have done to make this world a better place.

Dear Mr. Fuller's family,

I'm so sorry for your loss. The loss of Mr. Fuller will be felt all over the world. Because of his dedication and devotion to all the families across the world, many dreams have come true.

Habitat for Humanity changed my life personally. I have volunteered on several international builds. The experience drove my career path to help others. I've completed group leader training and will lead teams in the future to pass along Mr. Fuller's dream to eliminate substandard housing across the world. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Linda and family, please accept our heartfelt condolences. In his brief span of life, Millard changed the quality of life for millions, not just those who live in Habitat housing, but those who have learned that quality of life comes through giving and sharing.
We caught Millard's vision for decent housing for God's children back in the mid-seventies with Flower City Habitat (Rochester, NY). In the eighties, Millard came to Greeley, Colorado to help us initiate a Habitat chapter there. Thanks be to God for the persistence and faithfulness to the vision God gave him.

To the family of Mr. Millard Fuller:

May each of you find strength in your faith and comfort in God's amazing love, divine grace, everlasting mercy, and peace that only He can give during this transition.

What a great humantarian, such a wonderful life that touched and changed so many thru his vision, ministry and works. Mr. Millard Fuller was an example to us of Jesus love for humanity. We pray that your family will continue on the journey set before you.

Linda, we are forever grateful to you for allowing the world to share your husband thru his ministry.

I know that it is difficult now but as God applies the healing oinment of time remember that Jesus said that the will of God is that He should not lose any of those given to Him, but that He should raise them to eternal life at the last day. Therefore it is true that precious in the sight of the Lord is death of his saints. So, trust Him to care for Mr. Millard Fuller now.

God specializes in things that seem to be impossible and he will do what no other power can do. Our heartfelt sympathy, love and prayers are with each of you. There are no words that can fill the emptiness in your heart now but perhaps it will help to know others care.

To Linda, Chris, Kim, Faith and Georgia,
My personal copy of "Building Materials for Life" is autographed "In the joy of doing God's work" and that is the inspiration Millard left with many, many volunteers here in Lee County, Florida, the second largest affiliate nationwide in terms of production. In response to his challenge to get God's money out of the pockets of the people, the board of our Lee County affiliate pledges ten percent of all mortgages for international building and we lead all affiliates in that category. After personally helping with the building of fifty four homes, I can truly say that my life has been transformed by the vision of Mr. Fuller, the joy of sharing in his mission, and the hope that it brings to the needy world wide. I extend my deep sympathy and share in the great loss of this giant in the war against poverty housing, both here in our nation and further into the world.

Linda & Family,
My heart goes out to all of you. Millard has inspired many people to stretch their lived into being followers of God and His mission for their lives.

We first met Millard in Indianapolis when he spoke at the IN/KY Conference of the United Church of Christ in 1971. We then visited with you and Millard when you were living at Koinonia Farm before you went to Africa. That was where we realized Millard was real. He walked the talk.

My husband, Hubert (now gone 8 years)and I have been so blessed to have been partners with Millard in the ministry God gave him.

May God bless you all with His grace, mercy and comfort in the days ahead.

I did not know Millard or his family members. I do know that God sends among us very special people who are willing to listen to the promptings of the Spirit, realize their calling and are selfless enough to answer it. I believe that Millard Fuller was one of those. He worked to make the lives of others better by starting the Habitat for Humanity. God bless his entire family as they continue on their own paths of selfless service. We know that people like Millard are in the presence of the Almighty Love!

May God bless him for all his work and his family can take comfort in knowing that he accomplished what he was put on this earth for.

I am about to move into a Habitat House and I know that I am truly blessed. It is because of this organization and his hard work that I will now have my own home.

I know that he is in a wonderful place and I didn't know him but truly wish I had the privilege.

Thank You

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Fuller Family: May God's Peace and Comfort be with you in the loss of a great man with a heart for God. My husband was also that kind of man, a very spiritual Methodist minister. Many years ago he personally invited Millard Fuller to his church in Alexandria, Virginia, to speak and his message was awesome. I have never heard any one speak more from the heart and his dedication to God was so obvious in his life's work. We had lunch with him and both felt the presence of God through this humble man. Many times across the years my husband preached about this man who gave away all his money and began working for the poor. We both always felt blessed to have had the honor to meet him. And now, he joins my husband in Heaven who died in February two years ago. What a joy to ponder this reunion.

Dear Linda, Chris, Kim, Faith Georgia, & grandchildren: My sincere and deepest sympathy on the death of your husband, dad & G-pa. Millard, an honest & loving servant of God, along with his lovely wife Linda by his side, accomplished more than most people have achieved in a lifetime. The true founder of Habitat for Humanity had a dream, like one whom he so highly respected, Dr. Martin Luther King. Millard was able to realize a huge portion of his dream before our Lord and Savior called him home. I read the other messages and in particular, like the one from the "Mourners (Pittsburgh Pa)". I too believe that Millard will see full realization of his dream "In paradisium". Everyone will have the special home that Jesus went ahead to prepare for him/her. Millard's heart will overflow with joy! I have to guess that amongst his loved ones in heaven on the "welcoming committee" was Clarence Jordan. Praise God for the works of the Fullers! Thanks for dedicating your lives to the benefit of the masses! Linda, I will write to you soon. Dearest love, Bonnie.

To Linda Fuller and children. I had the opportunity to meet you and Millard while attending a Habitat conference as an Executive Director in Indiana. I was in awe of how God truly blessed you and Millard in all the work you did for Habitat and its families...and you were so humble in your ways and treated people so kindly. May God continue to bless you and your children and raise up more people to be like you and Millard. My prayers and love.
