Samuel Edward Conyers III, age 97, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2026. He was born to Samuel Edward and Pauline Conyers on April 9,1928 in Montgomery, Alabama. The family moved to Tuscaloosa in 1942. Attending Tuscaloosa public schools, Ed graduated from high school in 1946. After serving two years in the United States Navy as a Radioman aboard the USS Harlan R. Dickson, he attended the University of Alabama; he was called back to service during the Korean War, this time aboard the USS Henley.

In 1954 he graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1979 he received a Master's degree in Higher Education. He retired from the University of Alabama where he served as Director of College Relations in the College of Continuing Education. Beginning in 1962 he was associated with The University of Alabama Athletic Department. Over the course of his tenure, he worked with nine Alabama football coaches, six athletic directors, numerous officials and trainers, and countless supporters of the program. He was known for his engaging and inspirational speaking, sharing his love of the University with alumni groups, businesses, organizations, and churches.

On May 7, 2022, The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame awarded him The Frank "Pig" House Award at the 54th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony.

He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Peggy Jones Conyers; his daughter, Donna Conyers Jernigan Drinkard (Dean); his son, Samuel Edward Conyers IV (Trisha); his grandsons, Samuel Edward Conyers V and Jonathan Winston Jernigan; his granddaughter, Mary Conyers Jernigan Hicks (Jordan); his great-granddaughters, Marguerite Conyers Hicks and Mercer Jernigan Hicks; and many friends and family members including Rebecca Powell, all of whom he loved dearly and who cherished him just as much.

Ed's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Brett Bentley, homeRN, and Hospice of West Alabama for their compassionate and wonderful care.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church (721 Greensboro Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL) at 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 12, with a time of visiting with the family after the service. A private family burial will be held that morning. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crimson Tide Foundation, Box 870343, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35487, The West Alabama Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.

Honorary pallbearers will be Frederick Cody, Samuel Edward Conyers IV, Samuel Edward Conyers V, Hugh Thomas Danner, William Dean Drinkard, Jordan Mercer Hicks, Jonathan Winston Jernigan, & Leroy Mcabee Sr.
