Oral Roberts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 15, 2009.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Oral Roberts, the evangelist who rose from humble tent revivals to found a multimillion-dollar ministry and a university bearing his name, died Tuesday. He was 91.

Roberts died of complications from pneumonia in Newport Beach, Calif., according to his spokesman, A. Larry Ross. The evangelist was hospitalized after a fall on Saturday. He had survived two heart attacks in the 1990s and a broken hip in 2006.

Roberts was a pioneer on two fronts — he helped bring spirit-filled charismatic Christianity into the mainstream and took his trademark revivals to television, a new frontier for religion.

Roberts overcame tuberculosis at age 17, and credited that triumph with leading him to become one of the country's most famous ministers.

He gave up a local pastorate in Enid in 1947 to enter an evangelistic ministry in Tulsa to pray for the healing of the whole person — the body, mind and spirit. The philosophy led many to call him a "faith healer," a label he rejected with the comment: "God heals — I don't."

By the 1960s and '70s, he was reaching millions around the world through radio, television, publications and personal appearances. He remained on TV into the new century, co-hosting the program, "Miracles Now," with son Richard. He published dozens of books and conducted hundreds of crusades. A famous photograph showed him working at a desk with a sign on it reading, "Make no little plans here."

He credited his oratorical skills to his faith, saying, "I become anointed with God's word, and the spirit of the Lord builds up in me like a coiled spring. By the time I'm ready to go on, my mind is razor-sharp. I know exactly what I'm going to say and I'm feeling like a lion."

Unity of body, mind and spirit became the theme of Oral Roberts University. The campus is a Tulsa landmark, with its space-age buildings laden with gold paint, including a 200-foot prayer tower and a 60-foot bronze statue of praying hands.

His ministry hit upon rocky times in the 1980s. There was controversy over his City of Faith medical center, a $250 million investment that eventually folded, and Roberts' widely ridiculed proclamation that God would "call me home" if he failed to meet a fundraising goal of $8 million. A law school he founded also was shuttered.

Semiretired in recent years and living in California, he returned to Tulsa, Okla., in October 2007 as scandal roiled Oral Roberts University. His son, Richard Roberts, who succeeded him as ORU president, faced allegations of spending university money on shopping sprees and other luxuries at a time the institution was more than $50 million in debt.

Richard Roberts resigned as president in November 2007, marking the first time since Oral Roberts University was chartered in 1963 that a member of the Roberts family would not be at its helm. The rocky period for the evangelical school was eased by billionaire Oklahoma City businessman Mart Green donated $70 million and helped run the school in the interim, pledging to restore the public's trust. By the fall of 2009, things were looking up, with officials saying tens of millions of dollars worth of debt had been paid off and enrollment was up slightly.

That September, a frail-looking Oral Roberts attended the ceremony when the school's new president, Mark Rutland, was formally inaugurated.

I have really not been so aquantive with this so great a man of God until this morning while reading about him on the internet of his great works of Faith dedication and influence to humanity generally with a purpose of us hearing the words and believing in the works of God.

I am confident he's with the Lord who both healed and annointed him for ministry. I love you even in the bosom of the Lord dear Oral and Evelyn Roberts.

May God's peace continually dwell in our hearts as we are persuaded of His wonders daily and ultimately have a rather personal relationship with Him in our everyday living.

Thank you for showing me that the true way to The Lord is by giving of myself. Giving freely and giving often. Money, Time, Temporal Happiness and Gratification, whatever it is, give it up to Him and be saved from the unholy fires. This is the true way and the only escape from eternal torment. For Oral...

Now you stand on the
greatest stage in the universe.

This is for you...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The life of Oral Roberts was such an example. When I was growing up, I was always encouraged when listening to him share God's Word. I grew to respect him more as an adult. For many years, I wanted to attend Oral Roberts University. Thank the Lord for the love of Christ which Oral Roberts shared. Although I did not meet him on earth, I look forward to talking with him in heaven. I know that the family has many wonderful memories. They will help to comfort you, and make you smile. I thank God for Oral Roberts--a household name in our family. Years ago, my little sister was diagnosed as being legally blind. My mother took her to a tent service Bro. Roberts was holding in our home town. After Bro. Roberts prayed the prayer of faith and laid hands on my sister, her eyesight was much improved. She was no longer legally blind, and she no longer needed special reading help in school. She even grew up and got her driver's license. Yep, she did! Our God is faithful. He sent Bro. Roberts to the world with the message that God is a good God--and something GOOD is going to happen. That message has changed everything. I'm eternally grateful to God for the life and obedience of Bro. Roberts.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.

My Grandfather was a supporter of Pastor Roberts and his ministry, and in his later years Pastor Roberts reminded me of him and his love for the Lord. I have a golden replecia of the ark of the coventant that sat on my Grandpa's TV for years and years as I grew up in Ohio. When he died in 84 at the age of 84, that is the one thing I wanted, and I got it. It sits in my china cabnet today and in church I have told many about it.
Sorry, for your loss, but Heaven is such a better place to be now. I look forward to seeing him there someday.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am very greatful to have heard the the preaching and teachings of Brother Oral. I watched him on television for over fifty years. My faith and knowledge of God as a healer is the result of his teachings. May God continue to richly bless and keep his family.

Thank you Brother Roberts, for obeying God! You have touched so many lives, including ours. Thank you for hiring Kenneth Copeland as your pilot, so many years ago. He and you have been our Biblical mentors for 25 years! We'll miss you, though now you are with Jesus and your precious Evelyn! Much love to all of your wonderful family. Well done, good and faithful servant and Child of the Living God!

My deepest sympathy and prayers to the Roberts family.

As a child my parents made sure we all listened to him.

I will never forget the time when my mom told us while listening to him he spoke there was a child out there with whooping cough and that was my brother.

Pastor Roberts made a difference in lives as he believed and had a precious gift to share.

Mr. Roberts gave a clear understanding to "greater is he that is in me, then he that is in the world". I remember when my Mom would tune into his ministry EVERY Sunday morning, while we were getting dress for church services ourselves. There is no doubt in my soul that Mr. Roberts was a man of God. I pray his family receive the total peace that he had within his spirit. Remember "we too shall travel this road someday".
