Mosi Tatupu Obituary
Ashley O'Brien, a spokeswoman for Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass., said Tatupu was pronounced dead at the hospital Tuesday. She did not give a cause.
Tatupu was chosen by the Patriots in the eighth round of the 1978 draft out of Southern California. He stayed with the team until 1990.
The running back rushed for 2,415 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was better known for his special teams play.
Tatupu had his own cheering section known as "Mosi's Mooses."
He coached his son, Lofa, now a linebacker with the Seattle Seahawks, at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham.
Tatupu was high school star in Hawaii.

I remember tackling Mosi on the asphalt of the housing projects that we lived in Kokea ,Honolulu. I still have the scar on my face. Lol. We were told to play on grass after that. Growing up in the Palama area made him tough. Will miss this guy. Look forward to playing in the green pastures. RIP Sole.

Growing up down close to Bryant College when the Pats had there training camp, I spent most of my summer days there watching practice. Mosi was always one of the best to all of us kids. My parents still have the photo of me and him with Mosi allowing me to wear his shoulder pads and practice jersey hanging in their living room. You where all class on and off the field you will be missed. All my sympathies to the family.

I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Mosi, he was a wonderful guy, a class act and a great football player. The highlight of the 2009 Super Bowl Party I attended was not the game, it was being able to meet Mosi, look him in the eye and shake the hand of one of my all time favorite Patriot Legends. I consider myself lucky to have had that opportunity.
He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless him.

My memory of Mosi is watching him run in the snow and muddy field conditions.

Mosi Tatupu was the reason I first started watching football in the 80's. I found his attitude and very different "look" fascinating. He made me love the game. I am very saddened to hear of his loss. He was my favorite player.
My family has had season tix to the Pats since I was born, I'm 38 now. My 1st # in popwarner football was 30 because I was a huge fan of Mosi Tatupu and the way he played and carried himself. That would be my # all the way up to my Sr. year in high school.
He is a Big part of the foundation of The New England Patriots 3X Super Bowl Champs. Mosi was such a great player on the 86 Pats that beat Miami and went on to play in our 1st Super Bowl.
Gone, but never forgotten.
I have already started to tell my kids about him years ago and will continue.

My family was lucky to have front row seats at Schaeffer / Sullivan, right near the Pat's locker room entrance. A lot of the retired players would come to the games and hang out there, kind of out of the public view. Mosi came by and said hi, stood watching a game. I said. "Hey! Didn't you used to be Mosi Tatupu!?" He got a kick out of that and laughed. Over the years, when he'd come to the games, he'd always say hi, always joking around. A nice, nice guy.
A dark and gloomy February day got even darker when I heard the news of his passing. Only the good die young, and he's in a better place now. Prayers to his family, rest in peace big man. Filemu.

To admire Mosi from the stands was one thing. He was such a gentle giant and such a great player. I had the opportunity to meet him 20yrs ago when he was working with the Special Olympics. Watching him with both his own children and those children sponsored in the olympics made me admire and respect him so much more. What a generous, loving man he was with such a huge heart. I had lost track of him over the years but was so saddened to hear about his passing. There have been many times that I have spoken about the time we worked together during that carnival and I never stopped being a fan. God bless you Mosi and your family. Your legacy will live on.

Not only will Mosi be missed in the sports world, but he also will be missed for his work in the schools. I had the pleasure of working with Mosi at Foxborough High School. He was very well liked by the students he worked with and the staff. It was always fun to have him in class helping at- risk students. These kids turned into Mosi's Moose fans.
