Henry Roberts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 1 to Apr. 2, 2010.
ATLANTA (AP) - Dr. Henry Edward Roberts, a developer of an early personal computer that inspired Bill Gates to found Microsoft, died Thursday in Georgia. He was 68.

Roberts, whose build-it-yourself kit concentrated thousands of dollars worth of computer capability in an affordable package, inspired Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen to come up with Microsoft in 1975 after they saw an article about the MITS Altair 8800 in Popular Electronics.

Roberts, an ex-military man, later went on to careers as a farmer and a physician, but continued to keep up with computer advances: He recently told Gates he hoped to work with new, nanotechnology-enhanced machines, according to son David Roberts.

"He did think it was pretty neat, some of the stuff they're doing with the processors," said David Roberts, who confirmed Gates rushed to Georgia Friday to be with his mentor.

Roberts died in a Macon hospital after a long bout with pneumonia, according to his family.

Neither Gates nor Allen was immediately available for comment Thursday.

The man often credited with kickstarting the modern computer era never intended to lead a revolution.

Born in Miami in 1941, Roberts spent time in the U.S. Air Force and earned an electrical engineering degree from Oklahoma State University in 1968, according to information provided by his family.

He later parlayed his interest in technology into a business making calculators; when large firms like Texas Instruments began cornering the business, Roberts soon found himself in debt, David Roberts said.

Meanwhile, he was gaining an interest in computers - at the time, hulking machines available almost exclusively at universities.

"He came up with the idea that you could have one of these computers on your own," said David Roberts, adding his father expected to sell a few units. "Basically, he did it to try to get out of debt. "

Roberts himsel f would later describe the effort as an "almost megalomaniac kind of scheme" that he pursued out of youthful ambition.

"But at that time you know we just lacked the, eh, the benefits of age and experience," Roberts said on a program called "Triumph of the Nerds" that aired on PBS in 1996. "We didn't know we couldn't do it."

His son described his father as a tinkerer who surveyed his friends before building his personal computer.

"My assumption was that there were a bunch of nuts out there like me that would like to have a computer," Ed Roberts told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in a 1997 interview. "To engineers and electronics people, it's the ultimate gadget."

The Altair was nothing like the ultra slim laptops of today: Operated by switches and with no display screen, it looked like little more than a metal box covered in blinking, red lights.

"In the early days it was pretty useless. People just bought it thinking that it would be neat to build a computer," Gates said in a video history interview with the Smithsonian Institution.

Roberts founded Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems, which sold the kits. A young Gates and Allen would later found their fledgling Microsoft firm in Albuquerque, N.M., where MITS was based, and provide a computer language that helped hobbyists program and operate the Altair.

The men would eventually feud after Gates and Allen began selling versions of BASIC - or Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code - created for Altair to competitors, according to the 2003 book, "Leaders of the Information Age."

David Roberts said the men had since overcome their differences, and his father had remained an influence in both their lives.

He sold his company in 1977 and retired to a life of vegetable farming in rural Georgia before going to medical school and getting a medical degree from Mercer University, in 1986.

Roberts worked as an internist, seeing as many as 22 patients a day, his son said. But he never lost his interest in modern technology, even asking about Apple's highly anticipated iPad from his sick bed.

"He was interested to see one," said Roberts, who called his father "a true renaissance man."

A funeral is planned Monday, in Cochran.

By reading the numerous words of admiration and loyalty of Dr Roberts, I was not surprsed. The farmland he bought in Wheeler County was my fathers over 30 years ago. When my father past away in 2008 my son, brother and I rode out to the house my dad built and was THRILLED to see Ms. joan Roberts still lived there. In addition to buying the farm he also hired my father and when things got bad for a period of time he graciously let us live on the farm beside the barn that he converted to his office. Dr Roberts was also the doctor of my Great-great Uncle in Cochran. To all the family want to say THANK YOU for the friendship. Dr. Roberts was a good man and know Heaven is a better place with him.

To Dr. Roberts’ family and friends, please accept my sincerest sympathies.

In 1995, I published a small computer history newsletter, and Dr. Roberts graciously granted me an interview with him. My wife and two small children (one a baby) rode up with me from Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Roberts was very generous with his time and our interview / conversation was an exciting experience. I published the pertinent computer history related parts of that interview, including a few pictures, and it all turned out very well. Since then, I've always wanted to convert the interview from microcassette to digital. So about a week ago, I finally did. I am currently working on a "Remembering Ed Roberts" article for my blog, and I will be including the photos and the audio. The interview audio is about an hour and 46 minutes long. Dr. Roberts was very nice, relaxed and we had a good conversation. My baby son and little girl can be heard at different times making some noise, etc., but Dr. Roberts was quite understanding. I didn't know Ed personally (I hope the family will indulge me in calling him "Ed," as I think of him as Ed in my head, and that’s the way he's more known outside of his own community – “Ed Roberts, creator of the Altair”), but meeting him briefly, and spending that time with him was a very significant event in my life, and my wife remembers the time fondly too.

Ed has been written about numerous times throughout the years, and he's even been portrayed in at least one movie, "Pirates of Silicon Valley." In popular culture, his persona is that of a very stern and somewhat one-sided guy, but my wife and I found Ed to be a kind gentleman. He was down-to-earth and personable. We both enjoyed our time with him. I’m sure this is of no surprise to his family and friends. I was / am so honored to have had the chance to meet Ed personally and to have interviewed him. I think that the audio recording of our interview will become a historic and important media document. Future researchers and biographers can get their facts straight now, because Ed cleared up a lot.

Family members, please contact me if you would like me to send you a copy of the audio (mp3) file. Or, it is actually online at one site now - The Virtual Altair Museum. That site has had the interview transcript online for a number of years, so I offered a copy of the audio file for hosting - http://virtualaltair.com/virtualaltair.com/mits0011.asp

Dr. Roberts touched a lot of lives, personally there in Cochran, and virtually, well . . . all over the world. He will always be remembered.

Dear Rosa and Family,

I very much regret not being able to see Ed before he left us. Had that been possible, I would have thanked him for his vision, his leadership and his friendship. I would have thanked him for his service as a country doctor. Most of all, I would have thanked him for the compassion he showed his patients.

Minnie and I are so glad that we saw you and Ed during StartUp in 2006. May God bless you and the family as you go forward without Ed, the best friend I ever had.

Rosa & family,
If it were not for Ed Roberts Tony would not be the person he is now nor the Nurse Practitioner that he is. He challenged Tony, supported him, encouraged him, argued with him. He will truely be missed by everyone. I know that he touched many lives, mine included. He was always so good to Tony and I. He was a gentle giant of sorts. Thank you for sharing him for all these years with Tony & I. Thank you for touching our lives in so many ways.May God give you the peace that only he can give. If we can be of any help to any of you let us know. Marie Yawn

Dear Rosa and Dr. Roberts family, I can't find the words to express how deeply sadden I am on the loss of such a wonderful, kind and special man. Having worked with and for Dr. Roberts for over 14 years was a unique and enlighting experience that I will cherish all my life. His intelligence was astounding and I will miss hearing his opinions on healthcare and politics and all the other subjects we would talk about. I will never forget his kindness in taking care of my father-in-law when my mother-in-law was killed in a car accident. I can still see a small boy walking into the nurse's station at the Hospital and giving Dr. Roberts a big hug and telling him, "Thank you for saving my life". Dr. Roberts had to do a trach on him after a car accident. Then there was the day that People Magazine came to Cochran, WOW, our picture was in People because of one man, Dr. Ed Roberts. He was so special. I think he was as proud as I was when my son got a pilot slot in the Air Force. He would always ask what kind of plane he was flying and how he was doing. He was more than a Dr. he was our friend. We were so fortunate that he chose Cochran to practice medicine. He has helped so many. He is greatly missed. The loss of someone so close is difficult to bear. You now have a special guardian angel to watch over you, he loved you all so much. The void is there and will be hard to fill. May God bless all of you in this time of sorrow. Our prayers are with you. He will always live in our hearts and memories.
My deepest sympathy,

Dr.Roberts was my employer, my family doctor, and my friend. He was always such a gentlemen. He was generous to a fault. Having worked for him, I know first hand how he provided excellent care to many who could not pay (and sadly, to quite a few who just would not pay). He helped so many by providing medication that they could not afford to buy. Not everyone knows that at two different times for many weeks, he volunteered go to a fellow MDs office twice everyday and see his patients while that physician was sick and in the hospital. All of this was done without any pay. He was a rare find and set the mark high. I will always treasure the memories of the time I worked in his office.
Rest in peace my dear friend.

Our thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with you. We loved Dr. Roberts. He was so easy to talk to. He was so kind and patient. I will always remember when Dad was dying he made a house call to see about Dad. He and Dad are sharing memories now! He was such a wonderful friend and doctor. He was family to us. We will miss him greatly. May God Bless You and your family.

April 3, 2010

My thoughts and prayers go out to Rosa and the Roberts Family. Let me say it was both an honor and a pleasure working with Dr. Roberts. He was always humble and generous in all of our dealings. I can remember the day he called me to do some computer work for him: “My comment was why do you need my help, you invented this thing?” He just laughed and responded that he was a Doctor now. We got to chat about what new things were going on in the computer world and how far things had come in such a short period of time. Over the years when he would come in to the office or leave to do rounds at the hospital, we all would joke that “Elvis has left the building”. Well Elvis may have left us but he is still in our hearts and thoughts.

For Henry...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I am fortunate to have worked for Dr. Roberts and his sons Melvin, Clark, and Edward at Datablocks in the mid to late 1980s. I was always amazed at the unbelievable drive Dr. Roberts possesed. Sorry to hear of the Docters passing. My company bought an Altair and my boss put it to work as a data collection device in our small manufacturing plant. We saw the Altair at a Postal Service equipment show in D.C. This is the first time I've heard the complete and true story of its development and the Docters relationship with Bill Gates. To the family in this sad time, be assured that more than most any individual of my generation DR. Roberts will still be here long after his passing thru all the lives he touched.

Bill Gray

My sincere condolence to the family of Ed Roberts. My name is Bill Gray and I worked for Ed at MITS in the mid-1970s. To me, he was the entrepreneur who saw a niche in the microcomputer market no one else noticed -- the old Heathkit build-it-yourself approach -- grabbed the ball and ran with it; scoring the winning touchdown.

This was a time before the PC computers, before the Apple computer, before disk operating systems, before CRT displays, and all the nice little gadgets we all take for granted today. Yet, this was a time when many people wanted to know more about this amazing little device called the microprocessor. And, Ed Roberts help satisfy that hunger people had to know more about the microprocessors, microcomputers, and how they could use them.

Many people may not realize that Ed Roberts was very instrumental in the startup of the Retail Computers stores we see in all communities today. And, his product influence was there for the beginning of Apple Computer.

Ed Roberts came up with the idea to outfit a large luxury RV as a computer showroom and sent it around the country giving Microcomputer Seminars. That year, he drove the RV right into the Anaheim Convention Center during the Fall Joint Computer Conference and parked it in the MITS booth. As a matter of fact, it became the MITS booth. And, it created excitement.

At that time, there was only one computer store; a mom and pop store in Los Angeles. These Microcomputer Seminars, which were Ed's brainchild were a big hit. I would fly to different cities, meet the Traveling RV Computer Showroom -- and we would present Seminars in local hotels.

During one eventful week, I presented two nights of Microcomputer Seminars at the Hyatt Hotel in Palo Alto, where I met an old friend, Paul Terrell. Paul was so impressed with the large audiences we had -- that he signed up to sell the Altair computers in Northern California. A month later, Paul opened the the Byte Shop computer store in Mountain View, California, to sell the Altair in a retail and hobby environment. Then, a short time later, he opened a second store in Palo Alto with his brother, then another in Oregon with another brother -- eventually building the first franchise computer store chain, the Byte Shops, into 250 stores nationwide.

His store in Mountain View became a focal point for computer hobbyists and Paul's involvement in a local hobby computer club helped to sell his Altair products. Through this connection, he met Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs -- and we know they went on to found Apple Computer.

In the 1970s, the microprocessor exploded on the scene -- and Ed Roberts, with his entrepreneurial skills helped turn this into the tsunami which has become the PC and Apple flood of computers in every home and office around the world. As I said, few people know the extent of Ed Robert's influence in starting the computer phenomenon we take for granted today.

Ed Roberts' name should be up there in the history books with all the giants who have created the computer society we have today -- for his entrepreneurial spirit and drive played a large role in this societal phenomenon. Talk to folks today and ask them if they know Ed Roberts -- and virtually all would say no. Tell them that he was instrumental in putting those computers into their homes and offices -- and they will be shocked. Ed Roberts is most certainly the most unsung hero of our computer society today.

Thank you, Ed. And, thank you for allowing me to be a small cog in that movement of the 1970s computer tsunami you started.

Once again, my sincere condolence to all of Ed Roberts family and friend.

May God bless and comfort you in your loss,

Bill Gray

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I remember Ed from his internship at the Medical Center in Macon, GA. He was just a nice guy, genuine and helpful. He was the one to look for whenever the computer had a mind of its own. No matter how busy he was he never made a patient feel rushed or a computer novice feel stupid. He will be greatly missed. Our sincere sympathy to the family. Donnie and Janet Nichols (Macon, GA).

A soldier, an inventor; a healer and farmer - the quiet visionary. The stuff of determination and ingenuity. Time presses on, but let us pause to pray and say thank you to a good man

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.
